Accessing Sandbank Stream Campground requires navigating unpaved roads, typical of Maine's more remote wilderness areas. While 2WD vehicles can often manage, a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for a more comfortable journey, especially after periods of rain. It's important to be aware that logging trucks operate in the area, and they have the right-of-way on these public-access private roads, so always drive with caution and allow them plenty of space.
The campground is approximately 10 miles from the intersection of Route 11 and Swift Brook Road, and it's located near the beginning of the Katahdin Loop Road, offering a fantastic base for exploring the monument. Jun 02, 2025 · Bryant FieldThis campground has 3 spots, a composting toilet, and bear boxes. It's right on the water and feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. Great for star gazing! You must obtain a fire permit if you plan to have a campfire while there. Tons of mosquitoes in July; bring bug spray!
