Sand Creek Campground Introduce
For Hoosiers looking to experience the natural beauty of Northwest Indiana, finding the right campground can make all the difference for a memorable family getaway. Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton, IN, is a name that might appear in your search for local outdoor accommodations. Situated in an area known for its proximity to the stunning Indiana Dunes National Park, it's a location that holds potential for those seeking an outdoor escape. However, based on recent visitor experiences, it's crucial for prospective campers to have a clear and factual understanding of what to expect.
Recent feedback from campers indicates that the campground may not fully align with all advertised descriptions or expectations based on older information. One particularly disappointed family shared, "Absolutely nothing as the website describes. No pool, no trails, everything is overgrown. The owner said 'you didn’t ask if the pool was open'. I’m sure you all understand how much effort goes into making these weekends happen for your family, it’s not even about the nightly cost but missed memories and 3 extremely disappointed kids." Another review corroborated these concerns, stating, "Don’t believe what is posted on their website. Totally overpriced for what you ‘don’t get’. We paid for a pull thru and because the water wasn’t working at that only pull thru site, we had to move to a back-in site. No reimbursement. All shower/restroom facilities were inoperative." These firsthand accounts emphasize the importance of direct communication with the campground prior to booking, especially regarding specific amenities that are critical to your family's camping experience.
Sand Creek Campground is located at 1000N N 350 E, Chesterton, IN 46304, USA. This address places it within Porter County, Indiana, an area renowned for its natural attractions, most notably the Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park. For Indiana residents, its location near Chesterton means it's relatively accessible for a weekend trip or a longer vacation without extensive travel, particularly for those living in the northern and central parts of the state. The drive to Chesterton is typically straightforward, connecting to major interstates in the region.
The campground's proximity to the Indiana Dunes is a significant draw, offering opportunities to explore the unique dune formations, sandy beaches along Lake Michigan, and diverse ecosystems. While the campground itself may be in a state of flux regarding its internal amenities, its external location remains a strong point for those primarily interested in accessing the popular national and state parks. However, campers should be aware that while the geographical location is favorable for exploring the wider Chesterton area, the on-site accessibility of features like walking trails, as advertised on some older platforms, might be limited or unmaintained based on recent reviews. It's advisable to verify current conditions of any desired local attractions or activities directly before planning your trip around them.
Based on recent guest experiences, the services offered at Sand Creek Campground appear to be in a state of transition or limited availability. It is crucial for prospective campers to verify the operational status of any desired amenities directly with the campground prior to their arrival.
- Campsites: The campground does offer various camping options including tent sites, RV sites (with partial or full hookups), and cabins, as well as a yurt. RV sites may offer 30/50 amp electrical connections.
- Water Hookups: While some RV sites are advertised with water hookups, recent reviews indicate potential issues with functionality at certain sites, requiring campers to move or seek alternative solutions. The water quality at some spigots has also been a concern for visitors.
- Restroom and Shower Facilities: Multiple recent reviews specifically mention that all shower and restroom facilities were inoperative or very run down. While some older reviews mention cleanliness, this appears to be a current point of dissatisfaction for many guests.
- Wi-Fi Access: Wi-Fi is reportedly available only at the office, with limited access (e.g., 1 hour), and the office itself may have inconsistent operating hours, making reliable internet access challenging.
- No Reimbursement for Site Changes: One review noted that despite issues requiring a site change (e.g., non-functioning water hookup), no reimbursement was provided, which is an important consideration for budgeting your trip.
The features and highlights of Sand Creek Campground, as reported by recent visitors, emphasize a need for potential campers to manage expectations carefully and prioritize direct communication with the management. While some promotional materials may list various amenities, the current reality on the ground appears to be different.
- Proximity to Indiana Dunes: This remains a significant highlight. The campground is located just minutes from Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park, making it a convenient base for exploring these world-class natural attractions, especially if other park campgrounds are full.
- RV Accommodation: The campground offers sites with electrical hookups (30 amp and 50 amp) and can accommodate various RV sizes, including larger rigs. This is a practical feature for those traveling with recreational vehicles.
- Variety of Camping Options: In addition to RV sites, the campground reportedly offers tent sites, cabins (some with bathrooms, some without), and a yurt. This diversity in lodging might appeal to different camping preferences.
- Outdoor Space: The campground is set on a 40-acre property, providing "plenty of space to spread out." While some areas may be overgrown, the sheer size offers a sense of openness.
- Potential for Future Development: Given the negative reviews about current conditions, there is an implied potential for significant improvement and development by new management, as some recent positive reviews mention new management starting November 2024. This could indicate a future turnaround.
- Owner/Management Interaction: While some interactions have been frustrating for guests, other reviews mention friendly and helpful owners, suggesting a varied experience depending on specific circumstances or recent management changes.
For those considering a stay at Sand Creek Campground, here is the direct contact information. Given the inconsistencies noted in recent reviews, it is highly recommended to call and speak with the campground management directly to confirm current operational status of amenities, site availability, and pricing before making any reservations.

Direct communication will allow you to ask specific questions about the pool status, functionality of restrooms and showers, Wi-Fi availability, and the current condition of the sites and grounds. This proactive approach will help ensure your expectations are aligned with the present reality of the campground.
When considering whether Sand Creek Campground is suitable for locals in Indiana, it's important for Hoosier campers to approach it with a clear understanding of its current state, as reported by recent visitors. For Indiana residents whose primary goal is to find an affordable and convenient base camp for exploring the spectacular Indiana Dunes National Park, Sand Creek Campground's geographical location is undeniably a strong point. It offers proximity to the dunes that can be invaluable when state or national park campgrounds are full, and it provides full hook-up sites, which are often not available at the public parks.
However, it is crucial for locals to understand that the campground itself appears to be in a transitional phase, with facilities that are reportedly run down or non-operational. If your family’s camping experience relies heavily on amenities like a functioning pool, consistently clean and operational restrooms/showers, or reliable Wi-Fi, you will need to verify these directly with the campground prior to booking. The "missed memories and 3 extremely disappointed kids" comment underscores the potential for a less-than-ideal experience if expectations are set by outdated information. For the adventurous Hoosier camper who prioritizes proximity to the Indiana Dunes and is prepared for a more rustic or "no-frills" on-site experience, or perhaps those with self-contained RVs who are less reliant on campground facilities, Sand Creek Campground might serve as a practical, short-term stopover. However, for a comfortable and fully-equipped family camping vacation where on-site amenities are a priority, thorough due diligence and direct confirmation of services are absolutely essential to ensure a positive experience for your Indiana outdoor adventure.

Jun 21, 2025 · Sarah UnlandDon’t believe what is posted on their website. Totally overpriced for what you “don’t get”. We paid for a pull thru and because the water wasn’t working at that only pull thru site, we had to move to a back -in site. No reimbursement. All shower/restroom facilities were inoperative. No wifi except at the Office where we told we could use it for 1 hour, but the Office was never open. The water spigot at the back-in site that we had to move to was all rusty and even though we used a filter we were leery of the water. The campground is very run down and needs a lot of work. We would never stay here again.
May 05, 2025 · Sue LWe stayed here one night in October in a travel trailer while traveling coast to coast. This campground is not in the best location for traveling through but we were tired and wanted to stop for the night. The showers were very sketchy with all the rust covering the walls. The photos provided with another review are accurate We used water in the trailer since it is filtered. The photos with the reviews are accurate. The bathroom near us was out of toilet paper so I carried some extra that I keep when traveling. They have serious drain issues that need to be taken care of. I tried a different building with a bathroom the next morning and the entire area in front of the building was flooded. The staff was friendly although I was given some religious information that I didn't ask for. I was really glad that we were only staying for the night. I personally would not stay here again.
Nov 10, 2024 · Terry GriffisLooking to head to lake MichiganBut all the Indiana dunes camp grounds are booked up 8 months in advance? Then this is the spot for you.Not to far away for all that stuff! And not always packed! The owners live right on the property so if you need anything they are there to help.Only negative I could find is the water is has a serious rust issue. It has all the showers all rusty and it smells terrible. I didn't even put my head under the water & I chose not to shower the rest of the time I was there. And the women I was with said there hair smelt like it.Probably well water or something.I hope they can get that fixed somehow with some sort of filter or something. I love the place and I will continue to come back no matter what.
Jan 24, 2025 · Evan LeclereThey were redoing their septic and all dug up. Camping spot had not been mowed in weeks. We were in corner by old septic with no camp fire ring nor picnic table. Kids tried to go in main check in to ask for ice and were showed out.
