Sage Flat Campground boasts an excellent location in the Big Pine area of the Eastern Sierra, offering both a sense of remoteness and practical accessibility.
The campground's address is Glacier Lodge Rd, Big Pine, CA 93513, USA, placing it within the stunning Inyo National Forest. To reach Sage Flat, travelers from Highway 395 in Big Pine will turn west onto Crocker Street (also known as Big Pine Canyon Road). You'll continue on this road for approximately 9 miles, climbing into the canyon and entering the forested area. Sage Flat Campground will be on your left. The road to the campground is paved, but it is a mountain road with curves and elevation gain, so it's advisable to drive cautiously, especially with trailers or RVs.
While providing a true escape, the campground's proximity to Glacier Lodge (about 1.5 miles further up the road) is a significant convenience. This lodge offers a small store and grill, which are invaluable resources when camping in a more remote area. For California locals, this location in the Eastern Sierra is a prime spot for accessing a vast array of outdoor recreation, from world-class hiking trails to diverse fishing spots, all within a reasonable drive from many parts of the state. The journey to the campground itself is scenic, transitioning from the Owens Valley desert to the cool, shaded pines of the canyon.

Sage Flat Campground Reviews
Very nice campground 9 miles up Big Pine Canyon. Stayed 4 days. Large campsites and you can have campfires! Collecting wood is allowed as well. Big bear lockers for storing your food! Bathrooms are very well maintained. There’s a little store 1.5 miles up the road at the end which has everything you might need. Small grill too. We had Bacon Cheeseburgers that were awesome! Playground is next to store and Kids Fishing Pond. Sasquatch signs cracked us up. We did see Sage Grouse in the early morning. Creek is running pretty good. Lots of pools to sit and cool off in. Fishing was good, caught about 10, released them all. I’d definitely camp here again.
Sep 17, 2024 · Loretta St MartinThis is a beautiful campground amid mature ponderosa pine. The lower loop is first-come, first-serve, the upper loop is available for reservation. We had no problem getting our 24-ft travel trailer into a site. No hookups on any site in the lower loop, but potable water available.
Jun 23, 2025 · Allen BoyntonBeautiful campground. Traffic was light. Water spigots close by.I'm not a fan of vault toilets, though. We didn't have a reservation, but we found a site for 3 nights.
Sep 30, 2023 · Lori TravisAn amazing secluded spot. No cell service of any kind and most camp spots couldn't accommodate a trailer larger than 23 feet or so. Dave the host is a delight and very helpful.
Jul 24, 2020 · darin evansSuch a beautiful place with Gorgeous huge Jeffrey Pines. The place is very shady and there really is not one bad campsite. They are all great! The camp host is cool and he genuinely loves his job. He's super helpful and the water is crystal blue and gorgeous. Be sure to take the little walk where the Jeffrey Pines are hugging each other. Ask the camp host.
