Saddle Rock and South Gardens Environmental Campgrounds

Big Sur, CA 93920, USA

4.0
Arguably one of the best campsites across all of California’s state park if you don’t mind the short hike. It’s really easy to miss the entrance so if you’re coming from north keep an eye out for “Mac Way canyon Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park” (entrance to waterfall trail head) and the entrance to campground would be two turns down the road. If you’re coming from south, you know you’ve missed the campsite if you see the state park sign. You have to park on the side of the road and take your camping gear to the campsite. There is no signal here, so download the offline maps if you don’t want to get lost. There are two porta pottys on site, and each campground has its own food locker, picnic table and fire ring. It’s an amazing experience going to bed hearing ocean waves, but you gotta act quick as these sites are booked months in advance. - N Ft

Saddle Rock and South Gardens Environmental Campgrounds Introduce

For Californians who cherish the raw, untamed beauty of our coastline, the allure of Big Sur is undeniable. Within this iconic stretch of Highway 1 lies a truly special camping opportunity: the Saddle Rock and South Gardens Environmental Campgrounds. These aren't your typical drive-up sites; they offer a unique, immersive experience for those willing to embrace a short hike for unparalleled views and a deeper connection with nature. As locals, we understand the magic of Big Sur, and these campgrounds embody that spirit, providing a serene escape from the everyday hustle.

Often hailed as some of the best campsites within California's state park system, Saddle Rock and South Gardens are renowned for their breathtaking ocean vistas and proximity to some of the most spectacular natural wonders our state has to offer. They represent a quintessential Big Sur experience, allowing you to fall asleep to the rhythmic sound of crashing waves and wake up to the majestic California coastline. While they require a bit more effort to access, the rewards—solitude, stunning scenery, and an intimate connection with the environment—are well worth it.

These environmental campgrounds are designed for those who seek a more primitive and impactful camping adventure. They encourage a lighter footprint on the land, offering essential amenities while preserving the natural integrity of the area. If you're a Californian looking for a truly memorable camping trip that feels a world away, even if it's just a short drive down the coast, Saddle Rock and South Gardens should be at the top of your list. Remember, these coveted spots are booked months in advance, so planning ahead is key to securing your piece of Big Sur paradise.

Location and Accessibility

Saddle Rock and South Gardens Environmental Campgrounds are nestled within the breathtaking landscape of Big Sur, California, specifically located in Big Sur, CA 93920, USA. This places them right in the heart of one of the most iconic and naturally stunning stretches of coastline in the world. However, their unique appeal comes with a specific accessibility requirement: these are hike-in campsites.

Navigating to the campgrounds themselves requires careful attention, as the entrance can be easy to miss, especially if you're approaching from the north. A helpful landmark to watch for when coming from the north is the "McWay Canyon Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park" sign, which marks the entrance to the famous waterfall trailhead. The campground entrance will be two turns down the road from this point. If you are traveling from the south, a key indicator that you've passed the campsite is seeing the main state park sign. This subtle access point contributes to the secluded and pristine nature of the campgrounds, making them feel like a true discovery.

Upon arrival at the roadside parking, campers must park on the side of the road and then carry their camping gear to their designated campsite. This short hike adds to the environmental character of the campgrounds, minimizing vehicle impact and maximizing the natural experience. It's crucial for visitors to be prepared for this walk and to pack accordingly, keeping in mind that you'll be transporting all your essentials. Due to the limited to non-existent cell signal in this remote area of Big Sur, it is highly recommended to download offline maps before your journey to ensure you can navigate effectively without getting lost. This preparation will allow you to fully enjoy the natural surroundings without connectivity concerns. The proximity to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park means that world-class hiking trails, including the iconic Waterfall Overlook, are just a stone's throw away, making these campgrounds an ideal base for exploring the region's natural wonders.
