Rudds Creek Campground

Campground ★4.0

16064 US-58, Boydton, VA 23917, USA

4.0
Great campground managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at the John H. Kerr Reservoir and Dam. Located on Buggs Island Lake. Friendly staff suggested purchasing either the USACE or American the Beautiful pass to save a little money when reserving. Shaded rustic sites with many bordering little cove areas. We take nature walks, boat, kayak or make our own little water flotilla. Decent bathhouses. Sites have a fire ring/ grill grate, electricity and water (some sites are too near the lake to have electricity or water). Dump station near the entrance. Can’t beat the price --- it’s just hard to get a reservation. - Joanne S

Rudds Creek Campground Introduce

For Virginia residents seeking an unparalleled outdoor experience, Rudds Creek Campground, operated by the meticulous U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), stands out as a premier destination on the immense John H. Kerr Reservoir, which we Virginians lovingly call Buggs Island Lake. This isn't just a place to park an RV; it's a meticulously maintained, federally-managed recreation area that perfectly blends high-quality amenities with a stunning natural waterfront setting. With nearly 100 available sites (99 total), this campground serves as an ideal base for enjoying the lake's legendary fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities.

Rudds Creek is highly favored by both the RV community and families. The sites are known to be shaded and somewhat rustic, with many bordering the little cove areas of the lake. The majority of the sites are equipped with essential RV electric hookup and RV water hookup capabilities, ensuring a comfortable stay. However, as noted by local campers, securing a spot can be challenging—the difficulty in getting a reservation is a clear testament to the campground's immense popularity and recognized value within the Virginia community.

The facilities here are designed with the whole family in mind. The designation as Good for kids is strongly supported by the presence of a Playground and dedicated Kid-friendly hikes. Furthermore, the camp is committed to inclusivity, offering a Wheelchair accessible entrance, parking lot, and restroom. Even the bathhouses, while sometimes described as "decent," provide the comfort of hot showers and flush toilets, a welcome feature after a long day on the lake. The entire property is Dog-friendly, provided pets are kept on a leash and handled responsibly, meaning no family member has to miss out on the Virginia getaway.

Payment is convenient, with options for a Camping fee, and the acceptance of Credit cards and Debit cards at the gatehouse. For savvy Virginia campers, the friendly staff suggest purchasing a pass, such as the USACE or the America the Beautiful Pass, which can result in cost savings on reservation fees. This level of management and customer service reflects the professional oversight of the USACE, which operates the facility seasonally from approximately April 1st to October 31st.

While one user reported an unfortunate isolated incident involving noise and offensive odors, the general consensus is overwhelmingly positive, focusing on the beautiful location, friendly staff, and great value, which is why reservations are often hard to come by. The key is to book well in advance through the official system,

Recreation.gov

.

You get spacious, shaded sites, hookups for your RV, clean bathhouses, and dedicated water access—all at a price point that frequent campers find exceptional. While the sites may be closer together in some loops, the benefit of having a playground, designated swimming, and kid-friendly trails makes it an ideal spot for a family summer retreat.
