- Undeveloped Picnic Area: While designated as a "picnic area," it operates on a "pack in and pack out" principle. This means visitors are responsible for taking all their trash with them, as there are no trash cans or waste disposal facilities provided. This maintains the pristine nature of the site.
- Trailhead Access: The area serves as a significant access point, specifically noted as the "End of the Davis Creek Trail." This provides direct entry to a hiking trail that descends "straight down the mountain," appealing to experienced hikers looking for a challenging route.
- Remote and Natural Setting: The primary "service" is the provision of a quiet, remote, and "well maintained" natural environment. This offers a peaceful setting for enjoying a meal outdoors or preparing for a hike, free from the distractions of more developed parks.
- No Amenities: As a rustic site, it explicitly does not offer conventional campground amenities such as "playgrounds, bathrooms or table and chairs." Visitors must bring all their own comforts and necessities.
- Self-Sufficiency Required: The nature of the area necessitates that visitors are fully self-reliant, bringing their own food, water, seating, and any other supplies they might need for their visit.

- Strategic Trailhead Location: A significant highlight is its role as the "End of the Davis Creek Trail." While one reviewer notes the trail is "straight down the mountain" and potentially challenging, this makes Round Knob an important access point for serious hikers. It offers a unique opportunity to explore a less-traveled, rugged trail, appealing to those who "have to see them all" or are looking for a rigorous outdoor challenge. This isn't a gentle stroll, but a real trek for the determined.

This suggests picturesque roads that wind through beautiful Tennessee landscapes, setting the tone for a refreshing outdoor adventure before you even arrive at the picnic area. The drive itself becomes part of the experience.
- "Pack In, Pack Out" Ethos: While some might see the lack of trash cans, bathrooms, or tables as a negative, it fosters a strong "pack in and pack out" culture. This promotes environmental responsibility and helps maintain the pristine condition of the area. For environmentally conscious visitors, this aligns with leave-no-trace principles and ensures the natural beauty is preserved for future generations. It emphasizes self-reliance and respect for the natural world.
- Undeveloped and Natural Aesthetic: The absence of playgrounds or formal structures contributes to an untouched, natural aesthetic. It's a place where the focus remains squarely on the environment—the trees, the creek, and the mountain itself—rather than man-made diversions. This appeals to purists who prefer their outdoor experiences raw and unadorned.
- Quiet and Uncrowded Atmosphere: Because of its remote nature and limited amenities, Round Knob Picnic Area is unlikely to be overrun with visitors. This ensures a quiet and uncrowded experience, allowing for genuine relaxation and immersion in nature without the distractions of large crowds.
Given its remote and undeveloped nature, Round Knob Picnic Area does not have a dedicated public phone number for direct inquiries, as it is primarily a natural access point managed by relevant land authorities (likely the US Forest Service or a similar agency).

Round Knob Picnic Area Reviews
The trail has hardly any switchbacks and is straight down the mountain. If the waterfalls were better it might be worth it, but they’re not. I would skip this one unless you’re like me and have to see them all lol.
Apr 09, 2024 · Kipp WhiteLittle bit of a drive, but a super nice drive. Looks well maintained and remote. End of the Davis Creek Trail.
May 27, 2025 · Joshua PriceWe just decided to go grill and picnic one day and we went to Round Knob. There's a huge fireplace and there is a bathroom like an outhouse though but they had toilet paper too. There's a fresh spring nearby to the picnic area with tables and a barbecue already there but we brought one to use instead. Plenty of places to hike in that area just be careful we've had more bear and coyote sightings than normal, even coming down into suburbs etc
Jul 13, 2024 · Brandy RanlyGreat place to take the family to hike and picnic... beautiful views ❤️
Apr 04, 2022 · CagleConcepts Freelance PhotographerThe road is dangerous, 5 miles of gravel road, single lane with few pull offs, the facility is run down and not maintained. I would only access park with ATV or motorcycle with on / off road tires. It has beautiful views and access to trail systems like all the smokey mountain parks have but there are plenty of better accessible places to enjoy them.
