Rock Bottom Campsites is a privately owned campground that champions a more intimate and less commercialized camping experience. Situated on a sprawling 56-acre working ranch in Kelso, Washington, it boasts extensive frontage along the scenic Cowlitz River. This setting provides campers with sweeping views of the water and an immersive natural environment, fostering a sense of peace and seclusion that can be hard to find at larger, more populated campgrounds.
The campground offers a choice of accommodations, primarily focusing on traditional tent camping and unique canvas-style yurt tents. This curated selection caters to campers who appreciate a back-to-basics approach with a touch of comfort. The overall vibe is one of a "passion project" – a place lovingly maintained by its owner, creating a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors often remark on the personal touch and genuine hospitality they receive, making their stay feel special and unhurried.
A distinctive characteristic of Rock Bottom Campsites, as noted by past guests, is its location relative to train tracks. Tall trailers may not be able to fit under these tracks, which, surprisingly, is viewed as a benefit by many tent campers, as it inherently filters out larger RVs and motorhomes, contributing to the quiet and peaceful ambiance. This unique aspect further solidifies its appeal to those seeking a truly tranquil riverside retreat, where the sounds of nature and the gentle flow of the Cowlitz River are the predominant soundtrack.
Rock Bottom Campsites is located at 4315 Pleasant Hill Rd, Kelso, WA 98626, USA. Kelso is a city in Cowlitz County, Washington, nestled near the confluence of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers. This geographical position offers a blend of natural beauty and relatively easy access, while still maintaining a feeling of being off the beaten path.
Accessing the campsites involves navigating to the specific address on Pleasant Hill Road. As mentioned in reviews, a unique element of the approach is the presence of train tracks that may limit access for exceptionally tall RVs or trailers. This serves to create a more exclusive environment, favoring tent campers and those with standard-height vehicles. It's always advisable for prospective visitors with large RVs to inquire directly about height clearances before traveling.
Despite its peaceful, somewhat secluded feel, Rock Bottom Campsites remains accessible from major routes in Washington. Kelso is conveniently located near Interstate 5, a primary north-south artery in the Pacific Northwest, making it relatively straightforward to reach from various parts of Washington and Oregon. This balance of convenience and natural isolation makes it an attractive option for locals seeking a quick escape without venturing too far into remote wilderness.
The Cowlitz River frontage itself provides direct access to water-based activities, enhancing the appeal of the location. While the immediate surroundings are rural, the city of Kelso is nearby, offering essential services like grocery stores, gas stations, and basic amenities, allowing campers to stock up before heading to their peaceful riverside spot. Rock Bottom Campsites Reviews
If you have a tall trailer, you won't be able to fit under the train tracks. Which means you won't have to deal with RVs. The guy that runs it is super cool and kind. It was a slow Tuesday when we went, and we showed up late in the day. He upgraded us to a yurt for the same price as a campsite, which was really cool. We were the only people there that day. So it was really quiet and peaceful sitting by the fire by the river. It has the vibes of a passion project more than a business. He takes really good care of the place. We felt lucky we found this little peace of paradise on our road trip. I can't praise it enough. It was definitely something else. Skip the big, expensive campsites with tons of people and kick back here instead.
Jun 16, 2025 · Bobert CronosHad a great time here. Yurts are very private and it’s nice to be by the river especially with the outdoor fire! It’s BYO most things (cooking + bedding). Host Bruce was great! Very accommodating and friendly. Would definitely recommend.
May 20, 2025 · Kai EmeryThere is a pretty low clearance bridge that I had to drive under, but it fit my 2011 ford Escape, so if you want camping away from people, this is the place to go. The owners are still working on a few of the spots but its turning out really good so far. Its a woman and gentleman that own and work on these campsites and theyre really nice and reasonable and charge $35 for their drive in/bring your own gear spots. Will be coming again in the future. Get here before all the people discover it for a chance at extra extra peaceful camping
Jul 14, 2024 · Noelle TingeyStayed in one of the yurts last night. It was lovely! Beautiful, SO quiet, very comfortable. Gorgeous view of the river! Watched it until I fell asleep. Bed very comfy, but bring your own linens (or sleeping bag)
