Hidden gemI read the reviews after booking the site for Memorial Day after a cancellation by another park.1. There is no playground here. So I have no clue what other posters are saying. (Probably the trailer park nearby) no one stalked us.2. Camp host was friendly and did have one dog (didn't bark or act aggressive).3. The roads are equivalent to most in springfield-il, so they are terrible. But they are travelable.4. Sites are well taken care of but could use a makeover with updates.5. We were one of very few here so it was peaceful and quite.6. Lots of natural foliage keeps it secluded. - Johnny Dunlap

It’s a place where you can truly unwind, surrounded by natural foliage that contributes to a secluded feel, even though you’re just a short drive from Illinois’s capital city. This balance of accessibility and natural seclusion makes it particularly appealing to local campers looking for a convenient yet authentic outdoor experience.

Whether you’re planning an overnight stop on a longer journey or a quiet weekend getaway to explore Springfield’s rich history, Riverside Park Campground provides a no-frills, peaceful base. Location and Accessibility

Riverside Park Campground is conveniently located at 4115 Sandhill Rd, Springfield, IL 62702, USA. This address places it on the far north side of Springfield, Illinois, west of Business Route 55 (Peoria Road). Its position within Riverside Park is quite strategic, bordered to its north by the Sangamon River and Carpenter Park, and to the west by the railroad. While mixed commercial, industrial, and residential uses surround the park on its south and east sides, the campground itself, due to its natural foliage, maintains a sense of seclusion.

Access to the park and campground is off Sand Hill Road and Peoria Road from the east, making it fairly easy to reach for travelers coming from various directions. While some visitors have noted that the access roads within the park can be a bit rough – comparable to many roads within Springfield itself – they are certainly traversable. The benefit of this location is the balance it strikes: it feels genuinely tucked away in nature, yet it’s only a short drive from Springfield's significant historical sites and urban amenities. This means campers can enjoy a quiet evening by the campfire and still easily access attractions like the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, and the Old State Capitol during the day.

The proximity to the Sangamon River also provides opportunities for bank fishing and hiking along the mile-long road adjacent to the river, offering additional recreational options right within the park.
