May 23-26 2025 Riverpond Campground2nd time tent camping here. The grass was cut last time. Grass is very overgrown (they said that they were letting the grass go to seed to hopefully get the grass to thicken naturally) there are huge thorns that poke through the soles of your sneakers, the MOSQUITOS were out in ABUNDANCE (SWARMS of them and we had a ton a spray, mosquito repelling candles, and other things and STILL got eaten), port-o-potties, and had a few neighboring campers that played loud music into the night. Wish they had stopped by the loud people to ask them to respect the quiet hours. Starlight theater is next door. Listened to the the play more than once because it is right there. I didn't mind that. Important note: It is $4 extra for each person over 4 people, though the website kinda makes it look like the campsite capacity is what you're paying for. Also, $5 per vehicle that doesn't fit in the campsite. We had a large campsite and a few tents but it doesn't say what the capacity is so be prepared. We had to pay extra after we were done camping. Communal water spigot. Very few places to throw away trash. They expect you to pack it out which can be pretty uncomfortable if you are there for more than a day. We were there 3 nights. There is no area to let your dog be unleashed for a few minutes, they have to stay on leash your entire stay. Not a lot of people actually did that, but I tried to to my pup's dismay.I didn't give it a one star because we did have a great time anyway. We paid to watch the play next door the first night, the kids played in the river during the day the second day, they played in the thorny 'forest' between campgrounds, we enjoyed roughing it and eating food off the campfire, if you stood in the smoke you got a slight reprieve from the aggressive 'skeeters'. Will we go again? Not to this campground. Garden Valley is beautiful and I will try to come back again but try a different campground. - Rebekah Rushton

Riverpond Campground Introduce

For Idaho locals seeking an adventurous and unique camping experience, Riverpond Campground in Garden Valley offers a distinctive blend of nature and unexpected entertainment. Situated along the serene middle fork of the Payette River, this campground promises an opportunity to immerse yourself in Idaho's beautiful outdoors. While it boasts a natural setting, it's important for prospective campers to arrive with clear expectations for a more rustic, "roughing it" style of camping.

Riverpond Campground provides a setting that truly allows you to connect with nature, offering both RV electrical hookups and secluded tent sites. Its proximity to the Starlight Theater adds an unusual, yet potentially delightful, dimension to your stay, offering the unique experience of listening to live performances from your campsite. This campground is ideal for those who appreciate the raw beauty of Idaho's wetlands and rivers, and who are prepared for an authentic outdoor adventure, complete with the challenges and triumphs that come with it.

It's a place where memories are made around a campfire, where the sounds of the river can lull you to sleep, and where the unexpected can add a dash of excitement to your wilderness escape. Riverpond Campground encourages a prepared and adaptable spirit, promising a memorable, albeit rugged, Idaho camping journey.

Riverpond Campground is conveniently located at 40 S Middlefork Rd, Garden Valley, ID 83622, USA. This address places it squarely in the beautiful Garden Valley, known for its scenic riverfront wetlands on the middle fork of the Payette River. The setting is ideal for those who enjoy being close to water and lush natural surroundings.

A significant aspect of its location and accessibility is its immediate proximity to the Starlight Theater. This can be a unique highlight for some campers, allowing them to "listen to the play more than once because it is right there." However, it also means that campers should be prepared for potential noise from performances, which might extend into the night, as noted by some visitors who experienced "loud music into the night" from neighboring campers and wished for stricter enforcement of quiet hours.

While the campground is set within a natural environment, accessing Garden Valley itself is straightforward for many Idaho residents. Once at the campground, campers will find themselves in an area that offers direct river access, a charming lily pond, and open grass areas, despite some current challenges with overgrown vegetation. Its integration into Garden Valley allows for easy exploration of the local area, combining the solitude of nature with a touch of local culture.

Riverpond Campground offers a range of services aimed at providing a fundamental camping experience. Based on available information and customer feedback, here’s what you can expect:

  • RV Electrical Hookups: The campground offers 24 RV electrical hookups, providing convenience for those traveling with recreational vehicles. This allows for power access at designated sites.
  • Tent Sites: Numerous secluded tent sites are available, often set back into thicker brush to offer some privacy for tent campers.
  • Communal Potable Water Spigot: Access to drinking water is available through a "communal water spigot." This shared water source is essential for cooking, cleaning, and hydration.
  • Port-o-potties: The campground provides "port-o-potties" for restroom facilities. It's noted that these are the primary toilet option.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Pits: Sites are generally equipped with picnic tables and fire pits, allowing campers to enjoy meals outdoors and have campfires.
  • Pricing Structure: The campground has a detailed pricing structure: "$4 extra for each person over 4 people" and "$5 per vehicle that doesn't fit in the campsite." It's important to be aware of these potential additional charges, as the capacity might not always be clearly stated at the time of booking.
  • Trash Policy: Campers are expected to "pack it out," meaning there are "very few places to throw away trash." This requires visitors to carry out all their waste, which can be uncomfortable for longer stays.
  • Leash Policy for Dogs: Pets "have to stay on leash your entire stay." While some campers may not adhere to this, it is the stated policy for all canine companions.

Riverpond Campground features several distinctive aspects that shape the camping experience, offering both unique appeals and practical considerations:

  • Riverside Setting: The campground is "right on the Salmon River," offering beautiful riverfront access. This is a significant draw for those who enjoy fishing, water activities (though likely non-motorized given the peaceful nature), or simply the calming presence of flowing water.
  • Proximity to Starlight Theater: A truly unique highlight is its location "next door" to the Starlight Theater. Campers can "listen to the play more than once," creating an unexpected and often enjoyable soundtrack to their evenings. This offers a cultural experience rarely found at a campground.
  • Overgrown Grass and Thorny Vegetation: One notable feature is the "very overgrown" grass, which can have "huge thorns that poke through the soles of your sneakers." This contributes to a rustic feel, but also requires appropriate footwear and awareness. The "thorny 'forest' between campgrounds" offers a natural, albeit prickly, play area.
  • Abundant Mosquitoes: Visitors should be prepared for "MOSQUITOS out in ABUNDANCE (SWARMS of them)." Despite repellents, these aggressive insects are a significant presence, making smoke from campfires a "slight reprieve."
  • Potential for Noise: While aiming for a peaceful experience, the proximity to the theater and issues with "loud music into the night" from some campers mean that the quiet hours may not always be strictly enforced, impacting the tranquil atmosphere.
  • Roughing It Vibe: The overall impression conveyed by reviews is one of "roughing it." This appeals to those who enjoy a more unrefined camping experience, focusing on campfire cooking and natural immersion rather than extensive amenities.
  • Seldom Full: One review noted that it "seems like a campground which is rarely full," which could be a positive for those seeking solitude and less crowded conditions, especially during off-peak times.
  • Sense of Solitude (at times): Despite the potential for noise, the relative emptiness at times can create a feeling of "solitude" at night, which is a valued feature for many campers.

It is highly recommended to call ahead for reservations, especially given the various additional fees for extra people and vehicles, and to inquire about the current conditions of the campground, including grass maintenance or any changes in amenity availability. Riverpond Campground offers a distinctive, albeit rugged, outdoor experience that could appeal to certain Idaho locals. Its prime location along the Payette River provides immediate access to water-based activities and stunning natural scenery, making it a viable option for those who cherish riverside camping. The unique proximity to the Starlight Theater offers an unusual cultural element, allowing local theater enthusiasts to combine their passion with a night under the stars, potentially listening to live performances from their campsite.

For Idahoans who are seasoned campers and truly enjoy "roughing it," this campground can provide an authentic wilderness escape. The basic amenities, such as electrical hookups for RVs and a communal water spigot, offer enough comfort for those accustomed to less developed sites. The "pack it out" trash policy aligns with Leave No Trace principles, which many environmentally conscious locals appreciate, fostering a sense of responsibility for the beautiful Idaho landscape.

However, locals considering Riverpond should be prepared for potential challenges, including overgrown grass, abundant mosquitoes, and possible noise from neighboring campers or the theater. This campground is not for everyone; it caters to those who prioritize solitude (when available), direct access to nature's untamed side, and are willing to adapt to a less polished environment. For the adventurous Idahoan looking for a unique, no-frills camping adventure with a touch of the unexpected, Riverpond Campground could be a memorable, albeit challenging, choice within their home state.
