River Ranch Campground embodies the essence of old-fashioned family camping in nature. It’s a place designed for disconnection from the daily grind and reconnection with the natural world. What sets River Ranch apart, particularly now, is the evident dedication of its new owners. They have embarked on a significant journey of revitalizing the campground, focusing on enhancing the natural beauty and improving amenities while preserving its peaceful ambiance. This commitment is reflected in the creation of new, highly sought-after sites directly along the river, a rarity in today’s camping landscape. The campground provides a raw, authentic experience where you can hear the calming sounds of the creek and river, sleep under tall pines, and enjoy starry skies, yet it's not without comforts. The balance of rustic charm with strategic modern improvements makes it a compelling choice for both seasoned campers and families seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.
River Ranch Campground is located at 20900 Cottonwood Rd, Twain Harte, CA 95383, USA. Nestled in the picturesque Stanislaus National Forest, approximately 6 miles southeast of Twain Harte, its accessibility involves a scenic drive down into a canyon on the southeast side of the valley. The journey itself, roughly 22 minutes off Highway 108, winds through beautiful landscapes, signaling your arrival into a more secluded and tranquil environment. Despite its natural setting, the campground is within a reasonable driving distance from major Northern California cities (e.g., about 1 hour 23 minutes from Modesto, 1 hour 30 minutes from Stockton). While the campground is off-grid and does not offer electrical hookups at campsites, its remote location ensures a profound sense of escape. However, the new owners have thoughtfully introduced Wi-Fi connectivity in the upper campground area, providing a crucial link for those who need to stay in touch, without compromising the overall natural immersion of the lower, more secluded sites.
River Ranch Campground provides a blend of rustic charm and essential amenities, continuously being improved by the new ownership:
- Spacious and well-spaced campsites, including new sites located directly along the North Fork Tuolumne River.
- No RV hookups are provided; however, RVs are welcome for dry camping.
- One central bathhouse with flushing toilets and heated showers, open from 8 AM to 10 PM.

- Designated firepits and picnic tables at each campsite.
- Activities available within the campground include horseshoes, sand volleyball, a sandbox for children, and frisbee golf.
- All water on-site is labeled non-potable; guests should plan to bring their own potable water or purify/filter it.

- Complimentary firewood (subject to availability).
- Pet-friendly policy, allowing furry companions to join the adventure (with rules on leashing and attendance).

River Ranch Campground Reviews
A very beautiful, peaceful place to camp. The camp sites are well spaced out and roomy if you have a large group. We were able to camp along the water which we love! We had the privilege of meeting new owners who were working tirelessly removing fallen or half fallen dangerous trees. Hearing of plans for future improvements was exciting. We will definitely go back and recommend this campground!
Apr 01, 2025 · Thomas MillerWe used to camp here years ago when the kids were little. We decided to comeback with some friends and try it out as I’ve heard there are new owners. The campground was always great, but the new owners have done a ton of work. They have created new sites along the water which is awesome, camping along the river is hard to find these days. They have also done a great job clearing overgrowth and cleaning up neglected trees. And one of the biggest improvements,,, internet through the upper campground! So nice to keep in touch when camping. It’s clear the new owners are committed to investing some long overdue attention to this beautiful campground. They see the potential and I can’t wait to see what they do with it over the years. Can’t wait to go back.
Apr 01, 2025 · Lance NunnThe owner was an amazing and kind person, he helped my friends and I when we were confused or looking to hike, he would tell us the different hike trails. The campsite in general is BEAUTIFUL, the campsite has amazing views and super clean bathrooms, I would definitely recommend going, it was so much fun and beautiful!!
Jun 29, 2025 · 41an2itoWe stayed the weekend here with friends at other sites. There are two creeks running through the campground making for lots of places to hike/walk and fish. Clean bathrooms and WiFi! Short drive to Black Oak Casino (they have a potable water and dump station for $8). The new owners have done a ton of work to upgrade the campground. Highly recommend.
Apr 01, 2025 · Jeffrey ReyesRiver ranch campgrounds new owners are against family and against locals, two things that I wholeheartedly believe are the foundation of our community here in tuolumne county. When I arrived the only thing I was told is that the campground, and I quote "wasn't looking for people to visit the new owner is only interested in campers. No attempt to rent me a campsite was offered. Before I was told that I was greeted by an old lady that yelled at me for no reason then forced me through a closed gate and said I had to wait for this other person to "deal with me". From the moment I arrived i was bombarded with disrespect. So I did the same. Intentionally not burning out to avoid charges, I just made myself loud enough to let my party know I wasn't allowed in because there is no cell phone service. The sheer amount of disrespect that was directed at me from the moment I arrived to the moment I left was appalling. Maybe get the correct story from your "camp hosts". Also gatekeeping locals because of one group is unbelievably childish.
