Walk-in tent sites are nice, especially for a group with multiple tents. The other sites are better for car camping/small RVs.. they're a little too close to the loop drive and not well spaced. The Iowa River isn't scenic here: Lots of riprap and rebar. Local junkies have left a few needles laying around, so be careful. Not a great spot to swim. - matthew goff

Operated by Johnson County Conservation, this campground offers a straightforward, no-frills approach to enjoying the great outdoors, perfect for those who value simplicity and proximity to nature.

Iowa is often celebrated for its rolling farmlands and friendly communities, but it also boasts a surprising network of rivers, trails, and conservation areas perfect for camping. River JCT Campground fits perfectly into this landscape, providing a basic yet functional space for campers to set up near the Iowa River. We understand that expectations for campgrounds can vary widely, and this guide aims to provide a clear and factual overview of what River JCT offers. While some aspects might require a different approach or awareness, it's precisely these characteristics that appeal to a specific type of camper. Read on to discover its location, available services, unique features, and why it might be the ideal spot for your next local Iowa camping trip, especially if you're keen on river access and a more authentic outdoor experience.

River JCT Campground is located at 6058-6000 Sand Rd SE, Lone Tree, IA 52755, USA. This address places it along the Iowa River in the southern part of Johnson County, near the confluence of the Iowa and English Rivers—a fact that gives the campground its name, "River JCT" or River Junction. While it feels somewhat secluded, Lone Tree is a small, welcoming community, and the campground's proximity to larger hubs like Iowa City (approximately 12 minutes drive) and Cedar Rapids (around 33 minutes drive) makes it quite accessible for many Iowans. Even for those coming from Davenport (about 58 minutes away) or Dubuque (approximately 1 hour 41 minutes away), the drive is manageable, making it a viable option for a weekend escape or a mid-week fishing trip.

Access to River JCT Campground typically involves well-maintained local roads. As it is a more primitive site, visitors should be prepared for a natural setting. The campground is part of the Iowa River Water Trail, highlighting its focus on river recreation. While some reviewers noted noise from a nearby highway, this is often a trade-off for accessibility in certain natural areas. Regardless, the direct river access and the quiet of the natural surroundings for specific sites generally contribute to a peaceful atmosphere, especially within the walk-in tent sites. It’s always a good idea for campers to review local maps and drive directions carefully before their visit, as rural addresses can sometimes be tricky to pinpoint precisely without detailed navigation.
