Rio Puerco Campground is strategically located at the coordinates 36.100137, -106.723374, near the charming community of Coyote, New Mexico, within the expansive Santa Fe National Forest. Its position in the Coyote Ranger District places it in a truly scenic and secluded part of our beautiful state.
For New Mexico residents, the journey to Rio Puerco Campground is part of the adventure. While it offers a wonderfully secluded feel, its accessibility is quite manageable. Depending on your starting point in New Mexico, you'll typically navigate through well-maintained state and national forest roads. It's important to note that while the campground is accessible, it is "far from everything," as one local reviewer pointed out. This seclusion is precisely what many New Mexicans seek, offering a genuine escape without the constant hum of city life.
Visitors should plan their route carefully, especially if relying on GPS, as cell service can be spotty in remote areas of the national forest. It's always a good idea to download offline maps or bring traditional paper maps as a backup. The drive itself offers stunning views of the diverse New Mexico landscape, transitioning from high desert plains to forested mountains, setting the perfect tone for your wilderness retreat.
The proximity to Coyote, NM, provides a small town hub for any last-minute essentials before heading into the campground. However, as the reviews emphasize, it's highly recommended to bring all necessary food, water, and supplies with you, as amenities are not readily available once you arrive at the campground. This self-sufficiency is a hallmark of truly enjoying the primitive camping experience that Rio Puerco offers.
Rio Puerco Campground provides essential services designed to facilitate a comfortable yet rustic camping experience for New Mexico adventurers. While not a full-service resort, the available amenities cater to the fundamental needs of campers seeking an authentic outdoor encounter.
Primitive RV Spots: The campground offers flat, primitive RV spots. This means that while you can bring your recreational vehicle, you should not expect hookups for water, electricity, or sewer. Campers should be prepared for a boondocking or dry camping experience, bringing all necessary supplies and being self-sufficient.
Public Restrooms: Access to public restrooms is available, providing a basic convenience for all campers. These facilities are designed to minimize environmental impact while offering a necessary amenity in a natural setting.
Running Stream Access: A significant advantage for campers is the presence of a running stream. This natural water source can be utilized with a water filter system, as noted by a reviewer, allowing campers to replenish their water supply safely and conveniently. This is particularly beneficial for longer stays or for those who prefer to minimize the amount of water they need to transport.
Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with fire rings. This is a crucial feature, especially given the varying fire restrictions in our region. The availability of fire rings allowed campers to "lite fire during stage 1 fire restrictions," indicating that responsible campfires are permitted under certain conditions, enhancing the traditional camping experience.
Campsites Close to Car Parking: The layout of the campground ensures that campsites are conveniently located near car parking areas. This eliminates the need for long hikes to unload gear, making setting up camp much easier and more enjoyable for families and individuals alike.
Rio Puerco Campground distinguishes itself with several unique features and highlights that enhance the New Mexico outdoor experience. These elements contribute to its appeal as a prime destination for locals seeking connection with nature.
Super Nice Secluded Area: Perhaps the most appealing highlight for many New Mexicans is the campground's profound sense of seclusion. It offers a genuine escape from urban noise and light pollution, allowing for truly dark night skies perfect for stargazing and an unparalleled sense of peace and quiet. This deep immersion in nature is a primary draw for those looking to truly get away from it all.
Opportunity for Campfires (with restrictions): The presence of fire rings at each site is a significant feature. As noted in customer reviews, the ability to have a campfire, even during Stage 1 fire restrictions, greatly enhances the traditional camping experience, providing warmth, a place to cook, and a focal point for evening gatherings.
Abundant Wildlife Observation: The natural setting of Rio Puerco Campground means you're sharing the space with local wildlife. Reviewers specifically mentioned "lots of chipmunks to laugh at," indicating opportunities for observing small creatures in their natural habitat, adding an element of charm and discovery to your stay.
Plenty of Hiking Trails: For the active New Mexico outdoor enthusiast, the campground offers immediate access to "plenty of hiking trails." This provides endless opportunities for exploration, whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll along the stream or a more challenging trek into the surrounding Santa Fe National Forest. These trails allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the diverse ecosystems of the region.
Running Stream for Water Filtration: The active running stream is not just aesthetically pleasing; it's also a practical highlight. The ability to use a water filter system to draw water from the stream reduces the need to carry large quantities of water, making packing lighter and enabling longer stays for well-prepared campers.
True Primitive Camping Experience: For those who appreciate a less developed camping experience, Rio Puerco delivers. It's a place where you can truly practice self-reliance and enjoy the raw beauty of the New Mexico wilderness without excessive amenities or crowds. This primitive nature is exactly what many seek for an authentic outdoor adventure.

Jul 18, 2023 · Melanie TrujequeSuper nice secluded area! It’s far from everything so bring all the food/water you need! The creek is full enough to use a water filter system. The campsites are close to car parking so no hiking needed to unload the car.
Aug 07, 2023 · Sasha CastroBathroom needs to be cleaned but otherwise it is an amazing place to camp out. No trash cans so pack out your trash but such a beautiful and serene place to be. Also be careful of wildlife we had somthing large brush up on our tent last night.
Jun 08, 2019 · Morgan MathewsWe thought we would never find this place . It looked as if it had never been used . My wife flipped when we turned into the campground and a LARGE mountain lion took off carrying a dead beaver ! She would not get out of the truck ! So much for Rio Puerco Campground ! Maybe O.K.with a better 4 wheel drive and high powered rifle ! We only had a 9mm pistol ! Good luck ! Sleep with one eye open !
