Rice Lake State Park Campground

Many of the sites have good privacy. All of the vault toilets were locked when we were here (end of May). There is not much for hiking/walking trails here. The lake has been lowered for wildlife management so there is no acess from the park. That was a bummer because my dog loves to swim. This park had the most standing dead trees in the campground that I have ever seen in a state park. Personally I would not tent under that many widow makers. The bathroom/shower building was old, but clean and in good working order. The showers had reasonable water pressure and the temperature was decent. - James F

Rice Lake State Park Campground Introduce

For Minnesotans seeking an authentic and often secluded outdoor experience, Rice Lake State Park Campground offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature just a short drive from Owatonna. This state park is not your typical bustling resort-style campground; instead, it provides a more rustic and peaceful retreat, deeply integrated with a critical wildlife management area. While its amenities might be considered basic by some, and certain natural features are managed for ecological health, Rice Lake State Park remains a valued destination for those who prioritize privacy, tranquility, and a genuine immersion in Minnesota's natural landscapes. It’s a place where the focus is less on conventional recreation and more on observing and appreciating the delicate balance of the wild.

Rice Lake State Park Campground is located at 8485 Rose St, Owatonna, MN 55060, USA. This address places it approximately seven miles east of Owatonna, offering a convenient drive for residents from southeastern Minnesota and beyond. Its location provides a sense of quiet seclusion, removing campers from the immediate hustle and bustle of city life, yet keeping essential services and supplies in Owatonna within a reasonable driving distance. The park's accessibility is generally straightforward, with well-maintained roads leading to the campground. This balance between natural isolation and practical reach makes it a viable option for a quick weekend getaway or a longer, more contemplative retreat for Minnesotans looking to decompress.

The park's namesake, Rice Lake, is a significant natural feature, though its role is primarily for wildlife management. This focus means that conventional lake access for activities like swimming or powerboating is either limited or non-existent, as the lake's water levels are intentionally managed to support its unique ecosystem, particularly for migratory waterfowl and wild rice. This ecological emphasis shapes the overall experience, drawing visitors who appreciate a "hands-off" approach to nature and are interested in birdwatching or quiet paddling. While some might find the altered lake levels a "bummer" for traditional water activities, it underscores the park's dedication to its primary conservation mission, offering a distinct kind of natural encounter for local users.

Rice Lake State Park Campground provides essential services, aligning with its rustic state park designation. While visitors should manage their expectations compared to private campgrounds, the park ensures fundamental needs are met for a comfortable outdoor stay.

  • Electric sites: The campground offers sites with electrical hookups, accommodating RVs and trailers, as well as tent campers who prefer this amenity. This is a crucial offering for modern camping needs.
  • Basic sites: For those seeking a more traditional and rustic camping experience, basic sites are available, offering a minimalist setup close to nature.
  • Group camps: Available with advanced reservation, group camps cater to larger gatherings, providing dedicated space for multiple tents or RVs.
  • Restrooms and Showers: The park provides restroom facilities, including a main bathroom/shower building. While described by some as "old," reviews generally indicate they are "clean and in good working order," with "reasonable water pressure" and "decent temperature" in the showers during the season.
  • Vault toilets: These are available, particularly in some loops or at walk-in sites, providing basic sanitation. However, it has been noted that they may be locked or unavailable during certain times of the year (e.g., late May), so visitors should be prepared.
  • Picnic tables and fire rings: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, essential for outdoor dining and campfires. Approved firewood is available for purchase in the park.
  • Water spigots: Centrally located water spigots are available in the campground, providing access to potable water.
  • No dump station: It's important to note that this park does not have a dump station on-site, requiring RV campers to plan accordingly for waste disposal outside the park.
  • Canoe rentals: Canoes are available for rent at the park office, facilitating access to the shallow waters of Rice Lake for paddling and exploring.

Rice Lake State Park Campground offers several unique features and highlights that appeal to a specific type of Minnesota camper, emphasizing natural beauty and tranquility over extensive recreational facilities.

  • Good privacy at many sites: A significant highlight mentioned by campers is the excellent privacy offered by many of the campsites. This allows for a more secluded and peaceful experience, which is often sought after by those looking to truly get away from it all.
  • "Wonderful wooded trails": While some reviews mention limited hiking options or flooded trails, other accounts describe "nice and wooded trails" that wind around the lake, providing serene paths for hiking and exploring the park's natural beauty. The park officially offers 5 miles of hiking trails.
  • Excellent birdwatching: Due to its shallow depth and surrounding marshy areas, Rice Lake is a prime destination for birdwatching. It's a major stopover for migratory waterfowl, eagles, and various songbirds, particularly during spring and fall migrations. Birding kits with binoculars and guidebooks are available at the park office.
  • Canoeing and kayaking opportunities: Though the lake is shallow (around three feet deep) and not suitable for large motorboats or swimming, it's ideal for peaceful paddling in canoes or kayaks. The park even offers unique "boat-in" campsites accessible only by watercraft, providing a truly secluded camping experience.
  • Walk-in and cart-in sites: For tent campers seeking more privacy or a unique experience, the park offers five walk-in sites and four cart-in sites near the water's edge. These provide a more immersive natural setting away from the main RV loops.
  • Managed for wildlife: The lake's water level is intentionally lowered for wildlife management, promoting moist-soil plant production crucial for waterfowl. This makes the park a haven for observing a diverse range of wildlife in its natural habitat, particularly during migrations.
  • Quiet and peaceful atmosphere: Reviewers often describe the park as "nice and quiet," providing a tranquil environment for relaxation and disconnection from daily stresses.
  • Kids Discovery Kits: The park office offers "Kids Discovery Kits" on themes like "Wildlife by Water" and "Camping Skills," providing hands-on learning and entertainment for children, despite the lack of a traditional swimming beach.
