As a content writer specializing in local experiences, my goal is to provide you with a factual and engaging overview of this incredible place. We’ll delve into the specifics of its location, the services it offers, and the standout features that have made it a favorite among both locals and visitors. Rex Hale is more than just a place to park your camper; it's a destination where the lack of cell service becomes a highlight, the views are breathtaking, and the peace and quiet are a welcome change of pace. It's a place where you can relax to the sound of the nearby river, enjoy a peaceful night's sleep, and wake up ready for a day of exploration.
Let's explore what makes Rex Hale Campground a must-visit spot on your Wyoming itinerary.
Rex Hale Campground is situated on the N Fork Hwy, Cody, WY 82414, USA. Its location is one of its most compelling features. Located along the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, the campground is about 36 miles west of the city of Cody and just over 16 miles from the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park. This strategic position makes it a perfect jumping-off point for those wanting to explore the iconic national park without the constant crowds and higher prices of staying inside. The park itself is nestled in a scenic valley, offering spectacular views of red cliffs and the chance to see bighorn sheep. The North Fork of the Shoshone River runs nearby, adding to the picturesque scenery and providing opportunities for fishing.
Accessibility is a key consideration for the park. It provides a wheelchair accessible parking lot, a simple yet important feature that helps ensure more people can access and enjoy the great outdoors. However, it's worth noting that this is a classic, rugged Wyoming experience. As confirmed by numerous visitors, there is virtually zero cell service once you're in the area. For many, this is the entire point—a chance to truly unplug and be present. If you need to stay connected, be prepared for a digital detox. This lack of connectivity contributes to the serene and quiet atmosphere that campers love.
The campground offers a solid set of services and amenities, designed to support both RV and tent campers while maintaining a natural, rustic feel.
- Onsite services: The campground is well-maintained and provides essential onsite services. This includes access to potable water and clean vault toilets. There are no showers or dump stations on site, but these are available at nearby locations like Buffalo Bill State Park for a fee, making it easy to manage your waste.
- RV camping: Rex Hale Campground is very well-equipped for RVs. It offers a selection of sites with RV electric hookups and RV water hookups. The sites are known for being spacious, well-maintained, and often covered with gravel, making them mostly level and easy to park on, even for larger vehicles. Campers have noted that their trailers and trucks fit easily with room to spare.
- Camp hosts: A major highlight repeatedly mentioned by visitors is the quality of the camp hosts. They are described as genuinely nice, friendly, and conscientious, doing an excellent job of keeping the grounds and facilities clean. This human element significantly enhances the overall experience.
Beyond the basic services, the campground is rich with features that make it a compelling destination for a variety of campers.
- Recreational Activities: The surrounding area is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. The North Fork of the Shoshone River is a popular spot for fly-fishing for trout. Hiking opportunities abound, with trails that offer incredible views. The scenic driving along the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway is an experience in itself, with abundant opportunities for wildlife viewing.
- Highlights: The most celebrated feature is the breathtaking scenery and quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Reviewers consistently praise the beautiful views and the peace of the location. The sites are large and well-spaced, providing privacy. Each site is equipped with a table, campfire ring, and a bear-safe food storage locker, which is a critical safety feature in grizzly bear country. The availability of clean, stable power and perfectly usable water at the hookup sites is also a significant plus for RV campers.
- Family-Friendly: Rex Hale Campground is excellent for families. It is noted as being good for kids, with plenty of open space for them to play and explore safely. The quiet environment makes it easy for families to relax and enjoy their time together in nature.

June 30 · Bob FisherWhile visiting Yellowstone for 4 days we stayed in this awsome campground. The sites were well taken care of and everything was clean. Camp host Tom was a genuinely nice guy and very personable. The views were amazing and it was super quiet/relaxing. The water was very clean and perfectly useable and the power was very stable. There is zero cell service pretty much all the way the Buffalo Bill State Park (east) and Lake Yellowstone shore (west). We had a 22' trailer with our quad cab truck and they easily fit on the site together with room to spare.
July 26 · D BrouwerVery nice camp on the way to Yellowstone NP. It's situated close to the river which brings this unique vibe. During night you can take photos of starry sky, which looks amaizing due to lack of light noise. Toilets are clean, every spot is unique and has planty of room for tents or RVs, bear resistant boxes to store food, fireplace and table.
October 10 · Piotr SzychlińskiGreat basic campground. We stayed at a tent site without electricity. There are a few vault toilets in the campground, so it's not a long walk to get to one regardless of which site you stay at. The toilets were kept clean, as well, which was very nice considering that was the extent of the bathroom facilities. The location was great, too. It is about 17 miles to the East entrance of Yellowstone. It is close to the highway, and we could hear the cars passing by, but it wasn't loud or intrusive. Even though it is a campground with multiple sites together, the sites are not right on top of each other like at some campgrounds. There was a mix of tents and RVs while we were there. There are caretakers for the grounds who live on site. They were very nice, and checked on us when we arrived to answer any questions we had. If you want camping that's almost "roughing it", but not quite, then I'd recommend Rex Hale.
August 18 · Casey GilmoreI chose this campground because it was the closest to Yellowstone in the direction we were heading on our road trip, and everything inside the park was booked. But holy cow! What a pleasant surprise. It sits right on the river. And the view of the surrounding cliffs and stars were absolutely phenomenal. We felt like we really lucked out. Also, the bathrooms were super clean.
