We'll explore its unique location, the self-service amenities it provides, and the standout features that contribute to its charm, as highlighted by visitors who call it a "boater's paradise!" and a "lovely place!" If you're ready to embrace the quiet beauty of Kentucky Lake, Redd Hollow is waiting.
Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp is strategically located at Forest Service Rd 171, Murray, KY 42071, USA. This prime address places it directly on the eastern shore of Kentucky Lake, a magnificent body of water that forms the western boundary of the Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area. Being part of LBL means campers have immediate access to one of the largest and most ecologically diverse outdoor playgrounds in the region, encompassing over 170,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and open land between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.
Accessibility to Redd Hollow is generally straightforward, though it involves navigating a gravel road (Forest Service Rd 171) for approximately 1.5 miles off the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway. This well-maintained gravel road is typically in good condition and is easily traveled by cars and RVs, including larger travel trailers. Its location, slightly off the main thoroughfare, contributes significantly to its peaceful atmosphere, ensuring that the sounds of nature, rather than traffic, dominate your experience. While it offers a secluded feel, essential services in nearby Murray, KY, are within a reasonable driving distance (approx. 10 miles), allowing campers to easily pick up supplies before settling into their serene lakeside spot. This blend of remote tranquility and convenient access to town amenities makes Redd Hollow an ideal choice for a relaxing escape into Kentucky's natural splendor.
Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground operates on a "basic camping" model, emphasizing self-sufficiency and natural immersion. While it may not offer the full range of amenities found in developed campgrounds, it provides essential facilities designed for a comfortable, traditional camping experience.
- Self-Service Campsites: The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, providing designated campsites with gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings (some with adjustable cooking grates).
- Boat Ramp: A key feature, the paved single-lane boat ramp offers convenient and free year-round 24-hour access to Kentucky Lake, making it a true "boater's paradise."
- Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault (pit) toilets are available on-site for public use.
- Trash Disposal: A central dumpster is provided for trash removal, encouraging campers to keep the area clean.
- No Hookups: Importantly, Redd Hollow is a "no hookup" campground. There is no electricity, water, or sewer connections at the individual campsites. Campers must bring their own potable water and manage their waste, though a dump station and potable water refill station are available south of the Golden Pond Visitor Center within LBL.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are welcome at the campground, allowing your furry companions to enjoy the outdoor adventure with you.
The true charm and appeal of Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground lie in its outstanding natural features and the tranquil, immersive experience it offers. These highlights make it a favored spot for those seeking genuine outdoor connection.
- Stunning Lakeside Views & Sunsets: Many sites offer direct views of Kentucky Lake, providing breathtaking sunsets that are often described by visitors as "Best sunsets!!!" The tranquil waters create a picturesque backdrop for relaxation.
- Abundant Wildlife: As noted by a visitor, the area is teeming with wildlife, including "Birds, warblers, woodpeckers, heron, eagles!!!" and, of course, "Turtles!!" This makes it an exceptional spot for wildlife viewing and photography, particularly for bird enthusiasts.
- Secluded & Quiet Atmosphere: Especially during weekdays or outside peak seasons (like mid-April when it's "almost empty"), the campground offers a remarkably quiet and peaceful environment, perfect for unwinding and escaping urban noise. Dogs, too, "love it" for the tranquility.
- Direct Access to Kentucky Lake: Beyond the boat ramp, the proximity to the lake allows for easy access to fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and other water-based activities. Some sites are just "10 to 15 yards from the water."
- Hiking Opportunities: Being within Land Between the Lakes, campers have easy access to numerous trails, including sections of the North/South trail that runs the length of LBL, offering diverse hiking experiences.
- Spacious & Varied Sites: While some sites might be closer, many are "pretty far apart!" and offer unique advantages, from those right by the water to "very picturesque sites that overlook the lake" from a slight elevation.
- First-Come, First-Served: This system allows for spontaneous trips and offers a more relaxed approach to camping reservations, especially for those who prefer flexibility.

Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp Reviews
A boaters paradise ! In mid april the place is almost empty !! Birds, warblers, wood peckers, heron, eagles!!! Site 30 the best ( but not as close to boat ramp) FCFS camp sites. No water pump. Clean vault toilet. Other things to do also close by in the Land Between the Lakes NP
Apr 24, 2025 · David KlossSuch a lovely place! Usually quiet during the weekdays and my dogs love it.
Jun 03, 2025 · Rachel SchehrRedd Hollow is most assuredly one of my top 5 recreation areas I have visited. Well maintained with a variety of campsites and views of the water. Add in a boat ramp and plenty of wood for a campfire, and you have most of what you need. There is no potable water in the campground but you're only a few miles from a filling station near Highway 68. Verizon phone gets 5G service with 4 to 5 bars. Can't recommend enough.
Jun 11, 2025 · Andy MayfairThe campground could use some maintenance, busted picnic tables and fire rings. It does have beautiful views of the lake. The vault toilet was very clean
