Red Diamond Group Campsite is conveniently located in Blue River, Oregon, making it an accessible retreat for many residents across the state. The address is Blue River, OR 97413, USA. Blue River is a charming community situated in the heart of the Willamette National Forest, known for its stunning natural landscapes, including lush forests, the pristine McKenzie River, and a wealth of recreational opportunities.
While the campsite offers a wonderfully secluded feel, it remains relatively easy to reach by vehicle. As you head towards Blue River, you’ll find that the journey itself is part of the experience, winding through picturesque Oregon scenery. It’s important to note that while the campsite is accessible, its secluded nature means you should plan for a self-sufficient trip, as described in the services section. The remote setting contributes significantly to its appeal, offering a true escape from everyday life.
For those familiar with the area, French Pete Campground is mentioned as a nearby point of reference for potential firewood and water, though it's always advisable to confirm availability and quality beforehand. The drive to Red Diamond Group Campsite is generally well-maintained, but as with any venture into a natural, forested area, exercising caution and being aware of road conditions, especially during certain seasons, is always a good idea.
Red Diamond Group Campsite provides a basic yet essential set of services designed to facilitate a comfortable group camping experience. It’s important for visitors to understand what is provided and what they should bring to ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay. Based on past visitor experiences, here’s what you can generally expect:
- Restroom Facilities: The campsite is equipped with “Bucks” (vault toilets) for bathroom usage. These are typically maintained to a reasonable standard for a rustic outdoor setting, even during warm summer months. Users should be prepared for a basic, non-flush toilet experience.
- No On-site Water Supply: A crucial point for all visitors to note is that there is no potable water available directly at the campsite. The nearby river, while beautiful, is quite a distance and challenging to access for water collection, and the water is extremely cold. It is absolutely essential to bring ALL the water you will need for your entire stay. This includes water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and any other personal needs.
- Firewood (Variable Availability): While firewood is sometimes advertised for sale at nearby locations like French Pete, its availability can be inconsistent, and supplies may run out. It is highly recommended to bring your own firewood to guarantee you have enough for campfires and cooking, especially if you plan to have fires.
- Camp Host Presence: Visitors have reported the presence of a camp host who is helpful and contributes positively to the overall experience. This on-site support can be invaluable for any questions or minor issues that may arise during your stay.
Red Diamond Group Campsite stands out for several key features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for group camping in Oregon:
- Ideal for Large Groups: This is unequivocally a fantastic site for accommodating large groups. Its spacious layout ensures everyone has room to spread out, set up tents, and enjoy the shared spaces without feeling cramped.
- Exceptional Seclusion and Remote Feel: One of the most praised aspects of Red Diamond is its beautiful, secluded, and remote setting. If you’re looking to truly get away from it all and immerse your group in nature without the distractions of crowded campgrounds, this is an excellent choice.
- Rustic and Authentic Camping Experience: For those who appreciate a more rugged and authentic camping experience, Red Diamond delivers. It’s not an RV park with full hookups, but rather a place to embrace the simplicity and beauty of the outdoors.
- Variable Mosquito Conditions: While not a direct highlight, it's an important feature to be aware of. Mosquito activity can vary significantly depending on the season. Late August has been reported to have minimal mosquitoes, whereas July might see swarming conditions. This highlights the importance of checking seasonal conditions and bringing appropriate insect repellent.
- Opportunity for Wildlife Spotting: Being in a remote and natural area, there’s always a chance to observe local wildlife, adding another layer of excitement to your camping trip.
- Proximity to Natural Attractions: While the river at the campsite is difficult to access for swimming, the general area around Blue River and the McKenzie River Valley offers numerous opportunities for hiking, fishing, and exploring the natural beauty of Oregon.

Its suitability for locals lies in several key aspects that resonate deeply with the Oregon spirit.
Firstly, its designation as a “group campsite” directly addresses a common need for families, friends, and organizations looking to spend quality time together outdoors without the limitations of smaller individual sites. It offers the space and privacy essential for large gatherings, fostering a sense of community and shared experience that can be difficult to achieve in more crowded settings.
Secondly, the campsite’s secluded and remote nature is a huge draw for those who genuinely appreciate escaping the hustle and bustle of urban life. We Oregonians cherish our access to wild spaces, and Red Diamond delivers an authentic, back-to-nature experience that is increasingly rare. It encourages self-reliance and a deeper appreciation for the environment, values often instilled in those who call Oregon home.
While the lack of on-site water and the variable firewood availability require careful planning, these aspects are not deterrents for the prepared local outdoors enthusiast; rather, they are part of the adventure. It encourages visitors to be resourceful, to pack smart, and to embrace the full scope of a rustic camping trip. The positive feedback about the camp host further highlights a supportive environment, adding to the overall pleasantness of the stay.

Red Diamond Group Campsite Reviews
Great campsite for large groups. 2 Bucks are on site for bathroom usage, kept as clean as you can get from a Bucks in the middle of a warm summer. There is no water at the site and the river is too far away, and somewhat difficult to get down to, to rely on bucketing water from it. Also, it's super cold, I wouldn't plan on swimming at the site, but the water warms once it gets to Cougar.Fire wood is supposed to be for sale at French Pete, but they were unfortunately sold out. Water is also supposed to be available at French Pete, but we were told it was coming out red/rusty, so we left it alone. Definitely bring any and all water you might need for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and anything else you need it for.Mosquitoes weren't bad when we were there in late August, but I spoke with another person who rented in in July and they said the Mosquitoes were swarming, so it sounds heavily dependent on the season.Overall, fantastic site, the camp host was great, and we look forward to coming back next year!
