When it comes to finding the ideal base camp for exploring the magnificent Gallatin Canyon, Red Cliff Campground is a top choice for Montana locals and travelers alike. This campground, located on the banks of the beautiful Gallatin River, offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and practical amenities. It's a place that leaves a lasting impression, as one visitor noted, saying they would "remember this place for a long time." The lovely setting on the river's edge is a constant source of peace and tranquility, making it a true retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The campground is a perfect stop for those visiting the Big Sky Resort area, offering the closest electric hookups for RVs, a feature that is highly valued by campers. As one review confirmed, "This is the closest place we could find with electric." This convenience makes it an excellent home base for an extended stay while you explore the many attractions in the region. The campground is well-equipped with amenities, with campers praising the availability of "water, hookups, electric." These features ensure a comfortable and hassle-free stay.
One of the most appealing aspects of Red Cliff Campground is its prime location directly on the Gallatin River. The soothing sound of the river provides a natural soundtrack to your camping experience. This proximity also offers incredible opportunities for fishing, a popular activity in the area. Anglers can enjoy casting a line for trout, and the scenic beauty of the river adds to the enjoyment of the sport. While the campground is close to the highway, the sound of the river often helps to mask any road noise, creating a more peaceful environment.
Red Cliff Campground is versatile, accommodating both RV and tent campers. The sites are well-maintained and offer a variety of setups, from those with hookups to more traditional tent sites. The campground is noted for its cleanliness, with a helpful camp host who keeps the latrines as clean as possible. This commitment to upkeep ensures a pleasant and sanitary experience for all visitors. The presence of on-site potable water is another significant convenience, allowing campers to easily fill their water tanks or containers.
Beyond the campground, the surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor activities. The proximity to the Custer Gallatin National Forest provides a variety of hiking trails, from easy riverside walks to more challenging mountain treks. The campground is noted to be "good for kids" and offers "kid-friendly hikes," making it a great destination for a family vacation. Dogs are also allowed, so you can bring your furry friends along for the adventure. The stunning views of the red cliffs that give the campground its name provide a beautiful backdrop for all of your outdoor pursuits.
The campground's location on US-191 makes it an ideal spot for those traveling between Bozeman and West Yellowstone. It's a convenient overnight stop or a great base for exploring the area. Campers can take a day trip to Yellowstone National Park, visit the charming town of Big Sky, or enjoy a scenic drive through the breathtaking Gallatin Canyon. The combination of a peaceful river setting, essential amenities, and easy access to major attractions makes Red Cliff Campground a highly sought-after destination.
While the campground offers potable water, it is important to note, as a reviewer mentioned, that there are no on-site water or sewer hookups at all sites. The nearest dump stations are a short drive away, so planning is recommended for those in RVs. June 02 · Nalya MurPerfect stop to visit our son who works at Big Sky Resort. Closest place we could find with electric. There is potable water on site but no water/sewer hook ups. Closest dump stations are West Yellowstone ($30) or Bozeman town pump (free). Each is about 45 minutes away.
August 12 · Amy YokumWell kept campground. Sites are spaced pretty well. Hosts are super nice and helpful. Amazing river access. There is a trail head at the end of the campground. Half of sites have electric. Close to Big Sky. It is near the road but it's located across the river so it doesn't seem too close compared to other campgrounds in the area. Good overnight stop.
June 10 · Tara Crosby4.5/5. For the price (~$30), it is 5 stars. But this is a no frills campground. It only includes 30 amp for power. Your adapter will work but you will blow the breaker if you run all of your ACs.The setting is beautiful and the river between you and the highway makes it extra special. The sites along the river are closer to the highway but actually have less road noise. The sites are okay but aren’t terribly level and can be a little muddy. The camp hosts are really nice. It’s a friendly, laid back atmosphere. I believe it is the closest you can bring an RV to Big Sky.Pro tip: They post open spots for that night each morning on the bulletin board when you pull-in. We were able to snag an extra night this way.
July 26 · Sean BuschNice, large wooded sites. Road inside the campground needs work.
