Campground ★3.0

Camped at Rainbow Campground / Big Lake in the White Mountains. Camp Hosts were wonderful & attentive to campers. Its really to bad this company charges for EVERYTHING $10 to dump, $8 for a shower, $10 to throw away a bag of trash after hours. Making the money obviously fills the pockets and isn't put back into campgrounds for improvements because their campsites were horrible. The pavements on 99% of the 150ish campsites is crumbling. Making it hard to get RV's adjusted. When you finally do, you step off a crumbling ledge. Our site, when we stepped off our step, it was into dirt. No gravel, no asphalt. Thank God it didnt rain because us & our dogs would have been full of mud. We camp A LOT in Williams AZ at Kaibab Lake. Please don't destroy this campground. The previous company kept it pristine. We've been there this year a few time, as well as friends & it's not being cleaned. Toilets not cleaned daily, campsites not cleaned after campers leave and one camper told us she watched as the raked trash up against a tree. So very sad. She went & picked it up. - Yvonne

Recreation Resource Management of America Introduce

For Arizona residents and visitors looking to explore the state’s beautiful outdoor spaces, campgrounds managed by Recreation Resource Management of America are a common destination. Located in Lakeside, this organization oversees various campgrounds, including some popular spots in the scenic White Mountains. It is essential to have a clear understanding of their operations and policies to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping trip. These campgrounds, while set in some of Arizona's most picturesque locations, are managed under a concessionaire model, which influences their services, policies, and pricing. Knowing what to expect beforehand can make a significant difference in your experience.

The campgrounds managed by this company offer a chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the White Mountains, a region known for its tall pines, cool temperatures, and stunning lakes. The setting itself is a major draw for those seeking an escape from the heat of the lower desert. The experience is designed to be family-friendly, with amenities that cater to a wide range of campers, from those in tents to those with RVs. The goal is to provide access to these incredible natural areas, and for many, these managed sites are the perfect way to get into the heart of Arizona's high country.

Recreation Resource Management of America’s main office is located at 5925 Wagon Wheel Ln, Lakeside, AZ 85929, USA. This central location in the White Mountains region puts it in close proximity to many of the campgrounds it manages. The area is easily accessible via major state highways, making it a straightforward drive for most Arizona residents. The roads leading to the various campgrounds themselves are generally well-maintained, though conditions can vary depending on the specific site and seasonal weather.

Accessibility is a notable feature for many of the managed sites. They often include a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, making the outdoors more inclusive for everyone. This commitment to accessibility ensures that individuals with mobility challenges can also enjoy the beauty of the White Mountains. The on-site parking at the campgrounds provides a convenient place for vehicles, allowing campers to easily unload their gear and get settled. This blend of remote, natural settings with improved accessibility is a significant benefit for many users.

The campgrounds managed by this company offer several services, but it's important to understand the details, as some may come with an additional cost.

  • Public Restroom: Many sites provide access to public restrooms. These facilities are a key amenity, offering a basic level of comfort for campers. However, as noted in a customer review, the cleanliness of these facilities can be inconsistent and may not be attended to daily.
  • Restroom: In addition to public restrooms, some sites may offer more traditional restroom facilities. Campers should confirm the type of facilities available at their specific campground to ensure they are prepared.
  • On-site Parking: Campgrounds managed by the company offer on-site parking for convenience. It is important to note that, according to a customer review, there may be charges for "extra" vehicles beyond a single unit, which is something to be aware of when planning.
  • Additional Services: Certain services like showers and RV dump stations may be available, but they often come with a separate fee. A customer review mentioned charges of $8 for a shower and $10 for a dump station, indicating a "pay-for-what-you-use" model for some amenities.
  • Trash Disposal: A review noted a fee for throwing away a bag of trash after hours, which highlights a strict policy regarding waste management. Campers should be prepared to adhere to these rules or plan to pack out their trash.

These services, while designed to provide convenience, are managed under policies that can impact the total cost of a camping trip. Being aware of these policies in advance can help prevent any surprises upon arrival.

The campgrounds managed by Recreation Resource Management of America have several key features and highlights that are worth noting for potential visitors.

  • Good for Kids: The campgrounds are generally considered good for kids, offering a safe and natural environment for children to explore. The open spaces and recreational opportunities, such as nearby lakes and trails, make them excellent family destinations.
  • Camp Hosts: A positive aspect noted in a customer review is the presence of "wonderful & attentive" camp hosts. These individuals can be a great resource for campers, providing information and assistance during their stay.
  • Scenic Locations: The most significant highlight is the location itself. The campgrounds are situated in the beautiful White Mountains, offering a refreshing and scenic escape. Campgrounds like Rainbow Campground at Big Lake provide stunning views and access to water-based activities.
  • Campsite Condition: A customer review highlighted that the condition of the campsites can be a challenge. The reviewer mentioned that the pavement on many sites is "crumbling," making it difficult to level RVs. They also noted that some sites lacked gravel or asphalt, leading to muddy conditions after rain. This is an important consideration for those planning to visit with an RV or who prefer a more developed site.
  • Strict Policies: As noted in a review, the company has strict and sometimes confusing policies regarding "extra" vehicles and camp units. This can lead to unexpected costs upon arrival, and campers should be prepared for potential fees for multiple vehicles or multiple tents on a single site.

The highlights of these campgrounds are undoubtedly the natural setting and the friendly staff. However, the condition of the physical sites and the management's policies are key factors that potential visitors should be aware of to manage their expectations.

Choosing a campground managed by Recreation Resource Management of America means opting for a destination in some of Arizona’s most beautiful areas. The primary reason to choose these campgrounds is the access they provide to places like the White Mountains, Big Lake, and the vast Tonto National Forest. The campgrounds are family-friendly, with plenty of room for kids to play and explore. The presence of attentive camp hosts, as mentioned in a customer review, can also greatly enhance the camping experience, providing a sense of security and helpful guidance.

However, it is crucial to go in with a full understanding of the business model. The customer reviews point to a "money grab" philosophy, where additional fees are charged for services that campers might expect to be included. For instance, the charge for showers and dump stations, and the fees for extra vehicles or tents, are significant considerations. As one disgusted customer noted, these policies can feel like "extortion" and are a source of frustration for many. The poor condition of some campsites, with crumbling pavement and muddy ground, is another key factor to weigh, especially for those with RVs or a preference for clean, well-maintained sites. A review directly compares the company to a previous manager who kept the sites "pristine," suggesting a decline in maintenance.

Ultimately, what makes these campgrounds worth choosing is the stunning natural setting they provide access to. For those who can overlook the business policies and potential issues with site maintenance and come prepared with cash for extra fees, the beauty of the White Mountains may still be well worth the trip. However, for campers who value consistent policies, included amenities, and well-maintained grounds, it may be prudent to call ahead, ask detailed questions, and manage expectations accordingly.
