The core of the Rampart Range Recreation Area is centered around S Rampart Range Rd, Sedalia, CO 80135, USA. This location places it strategically within the Pike National Forest, south of the bustling Denver metropolitan area and west of Castle Rock. Its proximity to these population centers is a significant advantage for Colorado locals, enabling easy day trips or extended camping excursions without excessively long travel times. The main access road, Rampart Range Road (Forest Service Road 300), winds through the area, providing gateways to various recreation zones, trailheads, and dispersed camping sites.
Accessibility to Rampart Range is generally good, although it’s important for visitors to be aware that the main road, Rampart Range Road, is often an unpaved, native surface road. While typically well-maintained during the open season (mid-May to December 1st, weather permitting), it can be rough or corrugated in sections. Most passenger cars can navigate it, but vehicles with higher clearance or 4WD are ideal, especially if you plan to venture onto connecting service roads for more secluded camping or trail access. The close distance to major stores and shopping in Castle Rock is a huge plus, allowing campers to easily restock supplies or grab forgotten items. This balance of being immersed in nature while still being a short drive from modern conveniences makes Rampart Range incredibly appealing to local users looking for convenience without sacrificing the outdoor experience.

This historic lookout tower, operated continuously for over a century, adds a unique cultural and scenic dimension to the area.
- Designated Dispersed Camping Opportunities: The ability to engage in "designated dispersed camping" is a significant draw for those seeking a more rugged and private outdoor experience compared to developed campgrounds. Nov 02, 2024 · Kristen EiseleinStayed here one night out of 4, so far, woke up to grab breakfast at the sight of a bear in my face, in my tent, recommend people stay in a camper while out here, we won't be returning here or go camping ever again. As for the bears, I declare this open season
Jun 01, 2024 · Damien SkyThe ranger on duty bribed us for having more than 5 cars. We had to give him cash to leave us alone. We even had specified the amount of cars on the reservation and he didn’t care and was harassing us. The website and reservation never said anything about a limit on cars.
