Ah, so many mixed emotions.Overall, no, I would not recommend this location (especially sites 3-10), primarily because it's next to Highway 2, which is a major thru fare for logging trucks; not a dainty little drive by serene highway. We tent camped for three nights and were awoken every single morning/night by trucks, vehicles, etc.... Hwy2 was less than 20 yards away from our campsite. (If you have a RV, then maybe it's not as loud, but tent camping was tough). I wouldn't consider the sites super close, or far. They're somewhere in between. Enough to hear campfire giggles, but not every conversation. There were a lot of mosquitos at this location, but in talking with folks, it sounds like June is the worst month for mosquitos and it gets better. But also, I can't whine too much about mosquitos because #nature. We spent a fair amount of time inside our tent. The upsides?Clean restrooms + showers + dishwashing sink.Mostly shady sites. The camp hosts were great!Close to boat launch + kids playground & soccer field.Garbage containers that are not bear-proof (meaning: lack of bear showings). It reminds me more of a KOA and less of a National Forest Campground (reminder that this is run by the Army Corps of Engineers). So, if you want tranquil solitude of distance from humans... this camp ground likely isn't the place for you (it wasn't for us).If you want to be close to town, have amenities, and have the kids bike around, it will be a great place for you.Happy camping! - Rachel Hubel

Priest River Recreation Area Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Idahoans seeking a convenient, amenity-rich, and activity-packed camping experience, the Priest River Recreation Area in Priest River, Idaho, presents a compelling option. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and urban accessibility, providing a well-maintained basecamp for exploring the stunning North Idaho region. Unlike some more secluded wilderness sites, Priest River Recreation Area is designed for comfort and ease, making it particularly suitable for families with children, RV campers, and those who appreciate having modern conveniences close at hand. While some sites are indeed near Highway 2, a major thoroughfare, the overall consensus from visitors highlights the numerous upsides that make it a popular choice.

Guests consistently praise the clean facilities, including restrooms with hot showers and convenient dishwashing sinks – amenities not always found in every campground. The presence of friendly and helpful camp hosts further enhances the welcoming atmosphere, ensuring a smooth and pleasant stay. One reviewer aptly summarized, "The upsides? Clean restrooms + showers + dishwashing sink. Mostly shady sites. The camp hosts were great! Close to boat launch + kids playground & soccer field." This emphasis on practical comforts and family-oriented features positions Priest River Recreation Area as an excellent choice for Idaho locals who prioritize convenience, cleanliness, and accessible recreation during their outdoor adventures. It's a place where you can launch a boat, let the kids play, and enjoy the river, all with the peace of mind of well-maintained facilities.

Location and Accessibility

Priest River Recreation Area is strategically located at 7120 US-2, Priest River, ID 83856, USA. This address places it directly on U.S. Highway 2, just east of the town of Priest River. For Idaho residents, its location offers exceptional accessibility, making it an easy drive from major population centers in North Idaho and Eastern Washington, such as Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and Sandpoint. The campground's proximity to Highway 2 means a straightforward and well-paved route, suitable for all types of vehicles, including large RVs and trailers. This direct access significantly reduces travel time and stress, allowing campers to quickly settle into their vacation.

While the convenience of being near a major highway is a definite plus for accessibility, it's worth noting, as some reviews mention, that traffic noise from logging trucks and other vehicles can be audible, particularly for tent campers in sites closer to the road. However, for those in RVs or those who prioritize convenience over absolute tranquility, this is a minor trade-off. The location also means that the amenities and services of the town of Priest River are just a half-mile away, providing easy access to groceries, gas stations, restaurants, and other supplies. Furthermore, the campground's position on the banks of the beautiful Priest River, just upstream from its confluence with the Pend Oreille River, offers immediate access to water recreation without venturing far.
