Priest Lake Campground

Priest Lake Rd, Telluride, CO 81435, USA

Yes! So happy I discovered this fantastic spot! What a view to wake up to! Only about 8 vehicles with campers at the end of September/beginning of Oct, just above the lake. It was quite cold and my car was completely iced up. Took a stroll around the lake, when it got warmer in the morning and seeing the golden aspen and mist of the lake made my heart so happy! Bathroom onsite. - Gabriela Raimander PA

Priest Lake Campground Introduce

For us Coloradans, the allure of the mountains is constant, drawing us to high-altitude escapes where the air is crisp, and the views are boundless. When seeking a truly immersive outdoor experience that offers both stunning scenery and a sense of peaceful seclusion, a spot like Priest Lake Campground near Telluride stands out. This gem, nestled within the vast beauty of the San Juan Mountains, provides a unique opportunity for dispersed camping—offering a raw, authentic connection with nature that many of us cherish. This article is your guide to understanding why Priest Lake Campground could be your next favorite Colorado adventure, from a local's perspective.

Introduction / Overview

Priest Lake Campground isn't your typical developed campground with paved roads and extensive amenities. Instead, it's a designated dispersed camping area managed by the Forest Service, providing a more rustic and intimate experience with the Colorado wilderness. Located at an elevation of approximately 9,600 feet, just above Priest Lake, this spot offers breathtaking panoramic views that are truly a sight to behold, especially when waking up to the golden hues of aspens in the fall or the crisp, clear mornings of late summer. It's a first-come, first-served site, meaning spontaneity can often lead to the most rewarding experiences here. With about nine designated camping sites, it strikes a balance between offering a sense of community and providing enough space for privacy. Priest Lake is ideal for those who value natural beauty, quiet contemplation, and self-sufficiency, making it a beloved spot for both tent campers and those in smaller RVs or car campers seeking a stunning backdrop for their outdoor adventures.

Location and Accessibility

Priest Lake Campground is strategically located near the iconic mountain town of Telluride, Colorado, with its address noted as Priest Lake Rd, Telluride, CO 81435, USA. It sits about 12.5 miles south of Telluride, making it a relatively short and scenic drive from this popular destination. To reach the campground, you'll typically turn off Highway 145 onto Priest Lake Road (Forest Road 64B). While the main access road off the highway is generally traversable by most vehicles, the road within the camping area itself can be "rough and rocky," as noted by visitors. This suggests that while a high-clearance vehicle isn't strictly necessary for the initial approach, it could be beneficial for navigating within the camp area, especially to reach some of the more secluded spots. However, numerous reviews confirm that even standard passenger cars can make it to a spot. The location offers a secluded feeling despite being a short drive off the highway, immersing campers directly into the beauty of the San Juan National Forest. Its proximity to Telluride means campers have easy access to town amenities, shops, and restaurants, should they desire a break from the wilderness, yet they are far enough away to truly feel disconnected.

Services Offered

As a designated dispersed camping area, Priest Lake Campground offers essential, albeit limited, services to maintain its natural feel and provide basic comfort:

  • Designated Campsites: There are approximately nine designated camping sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, perfect for cooking and enjoying campfires (when fire restrictions allow).
  • Restroom Facilities: A key amenity for a dispersed campground, a vault toilet (pit toilet) is available on site. While basic, this provides a necessary convenience for campers. Visitors are often advised to bring their own toilet paper as supplies can run out.
  • No Potable Water: It is crucial for campers to note that there is no potable water available at the campground. Visitors must "pack it in, pack it out" for all their water needs, including drinking, cooking, and washing.
  • No Utility Hookups: There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at Priest Lake Campground. This is a true dispersed camping experience, requiring campers to be self-sufficient.
  • Limited Vehicle Access: While most vehicles can access the area, trailers are generally not allowed due to limited parking availability and challenging turnaround space. RVs are also explicitly not allowed at this particular dispersed campground, though smaller vans might find suitable spots.
  • Pack It In, Pack It Out Policy: As a free, minimal-service campground, it operates on a strict "pack it in, pack it out" policy. There are no trash receptacles or dumpsters on site, emphasizing the importance of leaving no trace.

Features / Highlights

Priest Lake Campground's appeal lies in its natural beauty and the unique experiences it offers:

  • Stunning Lake and Mountain Views: The most frequently praised feature is the incredible "view to wake up to!" Campers enjoy breathtaking vistas of Priest Lake, surrounded by the majestic peaks of the San Juan Mountains, particularly vibrant when the aspens turn golden in the fall.
  • Peaceful, Secluded Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, the dispersed nature of the sites and the vastness of the surrounding forest contribute to a quiet and remote feeling, perfect for unwinding and enjoying nature's tranquility.
  • Free Camping: As a no-fee campground, it provides an invaluable opportunity for budget-conscious Coloradans to experience high-quality camping in a prime location near Telluride.
  • Proximity to Outdoor Activities: Limited fishing is available at Priest Lake itself (known for brook trout), and the nearby Galloping Goose Trail offers extensive opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Other trails in the San Juan National Forest are also readily accessible.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The natural setting offers chances to spot local wildlife, from deer to various bird species, enhancing the wilderness experience.
  • Stargazing Opportunities: Away from city lights, the high elevation and clear Colorado skies provide excellent conditions for stargazing.
  • Dog-Friendly: Priest Lake is often noted as a dog-friendly area, allowing furry companions to join the adventure, provided they are kept under control.

Contact Information
