Like the other reviewer, I'm a bit hesitant to review this place, because I feel like it should be way more used than it is. And for a ridiculously low rental fee. (****EDIT: As of 2018, the rental fee has increased drastically. :(. It’s no longer feasible for our group of 15 or so to camp here as they now charge per person. It was nice while it lasted!****) I guess for those who NEED electric, or want their vehicles closer than a 5-minute walk from the campsite, it might not be ideal, but for us, it feels like a step up from the roughing it we usually like to do when tent camping. The pavilion has saved the day more than one weekend - since you usually need to make your reservations way ahead of time, no telling what the weather will be the weekend you come. But the nice tent sites, nearby ponds, lots of trails, and the lovely pavilion with lots of picnic tables, make this the perfect spot to have a large group meet up and have some amenities, including vault toilets, if you prefer not to go in the woods. Although, they get pretty stinky over the summer and I think the woods are a much better option, personally! We come for a long weekend every summer and look forward to it every time. We almost always have stragglers who show up and ask if they can camp anywhere (since there's usually lots of empty spots, since we tend to all group together in the main area) but they're always good when we explain that area is reserved and there's lots of places you can stay nearby with no reservations needed.Great place! Our local boy scout troop has come here from time to time, also. Perfect for any big group! - Stacy Romaine

Tucked away in the scenic Finger Lakes National Forest, this semi-primitive group campground is a hidden gem, perfect for those who appreciate a blend of natural beauty and essential amenities. It's designed specifically for groups, making it an ideal choice for family reunions, youth group adventures, school trips, and any large gathering looking to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with nature.

Potomac Group Campground offers a "back to nature" experience, where the focus is on communal outdoor living. While it provides basic but crucial facilities like a large pavilion and vault toilets, it encourages a more rustic camping style, without the distractions of electricity or close-by vehicle access. This setup fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and allows groups to truly enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings. Despite its primitive nature, it's remarkably well-suited for larger groups, with ample space for tents and gathering areas.

What makes Potomac Group Campground particularly appealing for New York locals is its affordability and unique group focus. While pricing has adjusted over the years to a per-person model (as noted by a past reviewer), it still offers a cost-effective way for large groups to enjoy the natural splendor of the Finger Lakes region. It's a place where you can secure a dedicated space for your entire group, ensuring privacy and plenty of room for activities, a feature not always readily available at individual campsites.

The campground's appeal lies in its simplicity and its ability to facilitate meaningful group interactions. From shared meals under the pavilion to stories around the central fire circle, it provides the perfect backdrop for creating unforgettable moments. Reviews consistently highlight its suitability for large gatherings, from school trips of 40 people to local Boy Scout troops, emphasizing its capacity and amenities that support group activities. It's a testament to its design that groups repeatedly choose Potomac Group Campground for their annual summer traditions, cherishing the communal spirit and natural setting it offers.

Potomac Group Campground is nestled on Potomac Rd, Hector, NY 14841, USA, within the Finger Lakes National Forest. Its location offers a unique blend of seclusion and accessibility for New York residents. While it provides a "back to nature" experience, it's situated in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, meaning that various attractions are within a reasonable driving distance. Access to the campground involves a short hike of approximately 200 to 500 feet from the designated parking area, which can accommodate up to 10 vehicles. This walk-in aspect contributes to the primitive feel and quiet ambiance of the campsites, as vehicles are not directly adjacent to the tenting areas. For New Yorkers planning a group trip, the drive to Hector is manageable from many parts of the state, especially those in Western and Central New York. This balance of being "away from it all" while still being connected to the Finger Lakes' broader offerings makes it an appealing and convenient choice for local groups seeking an authentic outdoor adventure.

Regarding promotions or special offers, the primary "special offer" of Potomac Group Campground lies in its exceptionally low group rental fee, although reviews indicate that the pricing structure has changed from a flat fee to a per-person charge as of 2018. The current pricing structure is reported as $20.00 per night/daily for a group of 8-20 people, and $40.00 per night/daily for a group of 21-40 people. This per-person model makes it less of a "ridiculously low" flat fee as it once was for very large groups, but it still represents a highly competitive and affordable option for reserving a dedicated group site. As this is a public campground likely managed by a government entity (Forest Service), traditional "promotions" in the commercial sense are unlikely. However, its fundamental pricing for group reservations remains a significant advantage for New York locals seeking an economical way to host a large outdoor gathering. For the most precise and up-to-date pricing, it is always best to contact the campground directly or check the official recreation.gov website for reservation details.
