Portsmouth Campground offers a quintessential Minnesota camping experience, balancing essential amenities with an immersive natural setting. It's a place where you can step out of your tent or RV and, within minutes, find yourself on a sandy beach by Portsmouth Lake or hitting an exhilarating mountain bike trail. While it may not feature all the bells and whistles of a resort, its appeal lies in its prime location and the straightforward access it provides to the heart of Cuyuna's outdoor playground. This article will provide a detailed look at Portsmouth Campground, covering its strategic location, the services it offers, its key features and highlights, and why it's a perfectly suited spot for Minnesotans eager to explore one of the state's most exciting recreational areas.
Portsmouth Campground is ideally located at 18071 Co Rd 30, Crosby, MN 56441, USA. This address places it directly within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, a truly unique and beautiful landscape in north-central Minnesota. The campground is situated on the northwest shore of Portsmouth Mine Lake, providing direct access to one of the area's stunning, clear mine lakes. This location is paramount to its appeal, as it puts campers right in the heart of the action.
For Minnesotans, accessibility to Portsmouth Campground is quite convenient. Crosby, MN, is a well-known hub for outdoor recreation and is easily reachable via state highways. From the Twin Cities, it's typically a drive of approximately two hours, making it a feasible weekend getaway or a destination for a longer vacation. Once in the Crosby area, County Road 30 provides direct access to the campground. A key advantage of its location is its immediate proximity to the vast network of mountain biking trails and other recreational features of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. Reviews highlight that Ironton and Crosby, the charming nearby towns offering various amenities like restaurants, breweries, and shops, are an "easy bike ride from the campground." This means campers have the best of both worlds: a natural, lakeside setting for their campsite and quick access to urban conveniences and extensive outdoor activities. While it's noted there is no campground office on-site, the location within a state recreation area means information and support are typically managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through their park office or online reservation system.
Portsmouth Campground, managed by the Minnesota DNR as part of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, provides essential services designed for a focused outdoor experience. While it emphasizes access to natural recreation, it ensures fundamental comforts for campers. Here are the key services offered:
- Camping Sites: The campground offers 33 total campsites, catering to various preferences. This includes 18 electric sites (allowing for convenient power hookups for RVs and trailers) and 15 non-electric sites (suitable for tent camping or self-contained RVs).
- Drive-in and Walk-in Sites: Of the 33 sites, 29 are drive-in, accommodating vehicles and RVs up to 70 feet in length, while four are designated walk-in sites, providing a more secluded tent camping experience a short distance from facilities.
- Restrooms with Showers: The campground provides bathhouse facilities, including restrooms with showers. While a review notes they "could use some TLC," the availability of showers is a significant convenience for campers after a day of outdoor activities.
- Drinking Water: Access to potable drinking water is available within the campground, essential for all campers.
- Direct Lake Access: Campers have a very short, "easy 2-minute walk to a sandy beach on Portsmouth Lake," providing immediate access for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, and other water sports.
- Direct Trail Access: The campground offers direct access to the extensive mountain biking trails of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, making it ideal for cyclists.
- No Water or Sewer Hookups at Sites: It is important for RVers to note that individual campsites do not have water or sewer hookups. Electric sites provide only electricity.
- No On-site Dump Station: There is no RV dump station directly within Portsmouth Campground. Campers need to plan to use nearby facilities (e.g., at other state parks like Father Hennepin State Park, or potentially a municipal dump station in Crosby/Ironton if available).
- Fire Pits and Picnic Tables: Each site typically includes a fire ring for campfires and a picnic table for outdoor dining.
- Reservations: Campsites can be reserved online through the Minnesota DNR's reservation system, allowing campers to secure their preferred spot in advance.
- Seasonal Operation: The campground is open from late April through October, with showers typically available from mid-May to early October.
Portsmouth Campground is distinguished by several key features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those familiar with Minnesota's state park offerings and the unique allure of the Cuyuna Lakes Area.
- Prime Location on Portsmouth Lake: Its setting directly on the northwest shore of Portsmouth Mine Lake is a major draw. The lake offers crystal-clear, cool water, perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, and other non-motorized water activities. The "easy 2-minute walk to a sandy beach" is a significant convenience and a highlight for families and water lovers.
- Direct Access to World-Class Mountain Biking Trails: One of the most prominent features is the campground's direct access to the extensive, well-maintained mountain biking trails of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. This "ride-in, ride-out" convenience is unparalleled for cyclists, offering "TONS of trails" for all skill levels, from easy rides to more challenging routes.
- Mix of Site Types and Shade: The campground offers a variety of sites, including 18 electric and 15 non-electric (tent) sites. While some central sites may have "little to no shade" and feel "cramped," the availability of "shaded" outer perimeter sites is a key feature to seek out for more privacy and comfort.
- Proximity to Charming Towns: Crosby and Ironton are an "easy bike ride" away, providing campers with convenient access to a variety of local businesses, including restaurants, breweries, bike shops, and grocery stores. This allows for enjoyable excursions beyond the campground.
- Scenic Beauty of the Cuyuna Range: The unique landscape, shaped by former iron ore mining, offers a visually distinct and appealing environment. The clear mine lakes and regenerated forests create a beautiful backdrop for camping and recreation.
- Boat Launch Nearby: Proximity to a boat launch for Portsmouth Lake (or other mine lakes) enhances accessibility for those bringing their own watercraft, though the focus of the lakes is often on smaller, non-motorized vessels.
- Minnesota DNR Managed: As a state park campground, it benefits from the oversight and resources of the Minnesota DNR, which generally ensures a certain standard of maintenance and access to state park resources.
While the lack of full hookups and an on-site dump station requires planning for RVers, the direct access to premier outdoor activities and a beautiful lake heavily outweighs these points for many.

Portsmouth Campground Reviews
Convenient to trails and an easy 2 minute walk to a sandy beach on Portsmouth Lake. The campground is okay, the outer edge campsites were shaded. We were at campsite 22 in the center of the campground and had little to no shade. Felt a bit like sitting at a table in the middle of a restaurant, so if you don’t mind that, the 20’s campsites would be fine, or if you were camping with friends and booked several of the campsites in the 20’s together, it could be okay. The shower/bath house was just okay and could use some TLC.No campground office or dump station. We detoured home to stop by Father Hennepin State Park to use the RV dump station there. I’m sure there must be one closer to Cuyuna but I wanted to check out the Father Hennepin park so didn’t mind going there. We loved the lake and were happy we brought our paddle boards. Amazingly clear and cool water. The mountain biking trails were well maintained and not too difficult but a fun ride. TONS of trails so you could spend days riding.Ironton & Crosby are an easy bike ride from the campground.Make sure to download the campground map before heading out.Would stay here again but only if we could snag a campsite on the perimeter of the campground.
Jul 09, 2023 · A SchusterNice campground, electric only and tent sites. Bathrooms with showers are on-site. No water or sewer at campsites. Nice beach and swim area. Close to boat launch and many biking trails in the area with direct access from the campground.
Jun 27, 2024 · Nick HarstadCatch the bike trails right from Portsmouth campground. Drive-through spaces with electric have easy access but are limited in the number of spaces available.
Jun 01, 2024 · Wade ClarinThis is an awesome location for visiting the Cuyuna Trails but everything about it is tired looking. This park should be updated and reconfigured. This area is incredibly popular and there is a shortage of camping areas.Despite the tiredness the location is hard to beat. There are mountain bike and pave trails right next to the campground.
May 14, 2023 · Daniel RandolphPeace and quiet mid-week! Nice to find a simple campground where the water is so clear for Scuba Diving. Many others come for the mountain bike trails, there's so much to do like fishing and kayaking, hiking, or just relax!
