From enjoying non-motorized water sports on Lake Isabel to exploring nearby trails, Ponderosa provides a foundation for creating lasting memories with your larger group. Let's explore what makes this campground a popular choice for many Coloradoans seeking a collective outdoor experience.
Ponderosa Group Campground is conveniently located in Rye, CO 81069, USA, within the beautiful Lake Isabel Recreation Area of the Pike-San Isabel National Forests. This prime location places it at an elevation of approximately 8,500 to 8,600 feet, providing a welcome escape from the summer heat of lower elevations and offering cool mountain air for comfortable camping. Its address makes it highly accessible for residents across Colorado, particularly those coming from the southern and central parts of the state. From Pueblo, for instance, it's a relatively straightforward 25-mile drive south on I-25 to exit 74, followed by an 18-mile westward journey on State Highway 165 directly into the Lake Isabel area. Clear signage then directs visitors to the Ponderosa Group Campground.
The campground's proximity to Lake Isabel is a significant advantage. While a recent review notes it’s a "couple of miles to the lake," this still allows for convenient access to a variety of water-based activities. The drive is scenic, winding through forested landscapes, providing a pleasant journey to your destination. The well-maintained roads in the area ensure easy arrival for various vehicle types, including those with trailers and RVs, though campers should be mindful that Ponderosa is specifically a group campground with limited RV accommodation within the tent-focused group sites themselves. Its accessibility, coupled with its mountain setting, makes it an attractive option for large groups seeking a balance between convenience and a genuine outdoor experience in Colorado.

Ponderosa Group Campground Reviews
My brother had his wedding here, it was great!
Oct 13, 2023 · Meggie GerhardtBathrooms are horrible--setbtonbe demo'd (for 2 yrs now). Lots of lookey-loos wanting a place to squat because they didn't plan ahead. Trails are nice, but you're a couple of miles to the lake. Lots of smokers around the lake. Day picnic areas are really nice--first come first serve; handicap access. Lake offers stock fishing and opportunity for non-motorized water sports.
