Ponderosa Campground

Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd, Big Sur, CA 93920, USA

3.0
I came here on a solo camping trip in March 2018 for a few days. When I came to Ponderosa campground, it was $25 a night. There is a host that lives on site, Pat. He went around the campground several times a day to check in, make sure everything was good and to make sure the restrooms were stocked. The campground itself is beautiful. It's pretty nicely spread out too. It is right by a creek, which was completely flowing when I visited. There were so many birds, it would be a great place for bird watching. There is no service out here, so be aware of that. It also got below freezing at night when I stayed so make sure you have the right sleeping bag. Each campsite has a picnic table, a firepit (which you don't need a separate campfire permit for here), and a charcoal grill.I would defintely go back again. - Kianna Silva-Jara

Ponderosa Campground Introduce

For us Californians, the allure of Big Sur is undeniable – its dramatic coastline, towering redwoods, and a unique sense of wild freedom. But beyond the well-trodden paths of Highway 1, there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered, offering a more intimate connection with nature. One such treasured spot is Ponderosa Campground, nestled along Nacimiento-Fergusson Road in the heart of the Los Padres National Forest. This campground provides a refreshing escape from the everyday, offering a tranquil and beautifully maintained setting for both seasoned campers and those looking to truly unplug in one of California's most iconic regions.

Ponderosa Campground has garnered a reputation among those who seek a quieter, more immersed camping experience. Visitors consistently praise its spacious sites, the soothing sounds of the nearby creek, and the dedication of its on-site hosts. It's a place where you can feel genuinely connected to the wilderness, surrounded by a diverse canopy of ponderosa pines, oaks, madrone, and sycamore trees. Whether you're planning a solo adventure, a romantic getaway, or a peaceful trip with friends or family, Ponderosa Campground offers an authentic Big Sur experience away from the coastal crowds.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through what makes Ponderosa Campground a must-visit for Californians, exploring its unique location and accessibility, the essential services it provides, its standout features, and how to get in touch to plan your next serene escape into the Central Coast wilderness.

Location and Accessibility

Ponderosa Campground is located at Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd, Big Sur, CA 93920, USA, deep within the Los Padres National Forest. This places it approximately 13 miles east from Kirk Creek Campground on the famous Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, which itself runs from the dramatic Big Sur coast (Highway 1) into the rugged high country. While the address places it in Big Sur, it's important for locals to understand that this is inland Big Sur, offering a different, often more secluded, forest experience compared to the coastal campgrounds.

Accessing Ponderosa Campground involves driving along Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. This road is known for its scenic beauty but can be winding and occasionally challenging, though it is generally well-maintained for forest roads. Travelers coming from the north on Highway 1 can turn onto Nacimiento-Fergusson Road near Kirk Creek. For those approaching from the south or from inland, reaching the road often involves taking Interstate 101 to the Ft. Hunter Liggett exit, then following various county and forest roads. It's always advisable to check current road conditions, especially after heavy rains or during winter months, as forest roads can sometimes experience closures or require extra caution.

The remote location contributes to the campground's peaceful atmosphere, but it also means there is little to no cell service in the area. This is a crucial detail for campers to be aware of, allowing for a true digital detox. Despite its secluded feel, Ponderosa Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring a "less traveled pocket of Big Sur" and accessing fantastic hiking opportunities within the Los Padres National Forest.

Services Offered

Ponderosa Campground provides essential amenities that ensure a comfortable and enjoyable primitive camping experience, without the distractions of excessive modern conveniences.

  • Campsites: The campground features approximately 21-23 family campsites, designed for both tent and RV camping (though typically without hookups). Sites are generally well-spaced, offering a good degree of privacy.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table, providing a convenient space for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
  • Fire Pits: Every site includes a fire pit, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires. Importantly, a separate campfire permit is typically not required when using the provided fire rings, though always check for current fire restrictions in the Los Padres National Forest.
  • Charcoal Grills / Pedestal Grills: In addition to fire pits, sites also offer charcoal grills or pedestal grills, a much-appreciated amenity for cooking.
  • Vault Toilets: Clean and well-stocked vault toilets are available throughout the campground, with camp hosts frequently checking on them.
  • Potable Water: Potable drinking water is available at the campground, although some older information might suggest otherwise; recent reports confirm its presence. (Note: Some private adjacent Hipcamp sites might have sulfur water, but the USFS Ponderosa Campground typically has potable water).
  • Bear Boxes / Food Storage Containers: Many sites are equipped with bear boxes or food storage containers, which are essential for safely storing food and deterring wildlife.
  • Camp Host On-Site: A dedicated camp host, like Pat, often lives on-site and makes regular rounds to check on campers, ensure facilities are stocked, and provide assistance. This personal touch enhances the camping experience.
  • No Cell Service: Be aware there is typically no cell service, promoting a true disconnect.
  • Fees and Reservations: The fee for a campsite is generally around $20-$35 per night, with additional fees for extra vehicles. Reservations are available online via Recreation.gov or by phone, though some sites may be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Features / Highlights

Ponderosa Campground's appeal lies in its natural beauty, peaceful ambiance, and the wealth of outdoor activities accessible from its unique location.

These trails offer spectacular views, leading to waterfalls, massive redwood groves, open meadows, and mountain streams, providing a "less traveled pocket of Big Sur" for exploration.
  • Dark Skies for Stargazing: Due to the lack of light pollution in this remote area, Ponderosa Campground offers exceptional opportunities for stargazing, with clear night skies showcasing planets and galaxies.
  • Beautiful Forest Canopy: Campers are sheltered under a diverse and beautiful canopy of Ponderosa Pine, Oak, Madrone, and Sycamore trees, providing ample shade and a rich forest environment.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The diverse forest environment is home to various wildlife, including deer, squirrels, and a variety of bird species.
