Great camping area! We were last here over 30 years ago and were pleased to see that things have remained as undeveloped as ever. Beautiful area with sites all along the peninsula - most sites seem to be shaded & are fairly level. Water spigots & rest rooms are located throughout the sites. A dump site is also available. Great spots to cast a line to try your hand at fishing. If you're looking for a peaceful area, then this is the place for you! - Karen “Kmini”

The beauty of this location extends beyond the campground itself. Bantam Lake is a hub for water activities, and the surrounding area offers a wealth of recreational and cultural opportunities. The nearby towns of Litchfield, Morris, and Washington provide quaint village centers with unique shops, art galleries, and local eateries. For outdoor enthusiasts, the expansive White Memorial Conservation Center, which operates Point Folly, offers over 4,000 acres of preserved land with extensive hiking, biking, and birdwatching trails. Services Offered

Point Folly Campground maintains a rustic charm, focusing on the essential elements of camping while providing necessary conveniences. It’s important to note that Point Folly is not a resort-style campground with extensive modern amenities, which is precisely what appeals to many of its long-time visitors. Operated by the White Memorial Foundation, the services are geared towards facilitating a natural and peaceful outdoor experience.

  • Variety of Campsites: Point Folly offers 47 campsites, accommodating both tents and RVs (up to 30 feet in length). Many of these sites are shaded and fairly level, with a significant number located along the peninsula, offering lake views.

  • Basic Site Provisions: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, essential for outdoor cooking and enjoying campfires.

  • Water Access: Water spigots are conveniently located throughout the campground, providing access to drinking water for all campers.

  • Restroom Facilities: Pit toilets are available throughout the sites. It’s noted by long-term campers that while these are basic, they serve the purpose, contributing to the rustic camping experience. There are no showers available on-site, a feature that contributes to the "undeveloped" feel cherished by many.

  • Dump Station: A dump station is available on-site for RV campers, allowing for proper waste disposal.

  • Boat Launch and Marina Access: For those looking to enjoy Bantam Lake, there's a boat launch available for a small fee. The White Memorial Foundation also operates a marina with moorings and boat slips for rent, providing direct access to boating, canoeing, and kayaking on the lake.

  • Campground Store: A small campground store near the entrance offers convenience items, including local firewood (important for preventing the spread of forest pests) and ice cream.

  • Pet-Friendly: Point Folly is a pet-friendly campground, allowing campers to bring their furry companions, provided pets are kept on a leash and owners adhere to cleanup policies.

Features / Highlights

Point Folly Campground’s allure lies in its enduring features that emphasize a back-to-nature experience, making it a beloved spot for generations of Connecticut campers.

  • Lakeside Setting on Bantam Lake: The most prominent highlight is its unique location on a peninsula of Bantam Lake. This offers stunning water views from many campsites and direct access for swimming, boating, and fishing. The presence of the lake greatly enhances the recreational opportunities available to campers.

  • Peaceful and Undeveloped Atmosphere: As noted by long-time visitors, Point Folly has "remained as undeveloped as ever," offering a truly peaceful area. This is ideal for those seeking a quiet escape from urban noise and crowds, fostering relaxation and a genuine connection with nature.

  • Excellent Fishing Opportunities: Bantam Lake is known for its excellent fishing, with a variety of species including bass, perch, and northern pike. The campground's lakeside sites provide easy access for anglers to "cast a line to try your hand at fishing."

  • Historical and Familial Connection: Reviews highlight a strong sense of nostalgia and family tradition, with campers returning for decades. This speaks to the consistent quality of the experience and its ability to create lasting memories. It's a place where "children loved it" and families continue to return, indicating a multi-generational appeal.

  • Managed by White Memorial Foundation: Being operated by the White Memorial Conservation Center means the campground is part of a larger, well-preserved natural area. This ensures a commitment to conservation and provides campers with access to an extensive network of trails and nature-based activities within the broader White Memorial property, including a nature museum just a couple of miles away.

  • Rustic Charm: The absence of modern conveniences like showers and individual hookups for water/electricity at sites reinforces a rustic camping experience. For purists and those looking to truly disconnect, this simplicity is a significant draw.

These features collectively define Point Folly as a classic Connecticut camping destination, cherished for its natural beauty and traditional outdoor experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a campground managed by the White Memorial Foundation, a non-profit conservation center, Point Folly typically focuses on providing an affordable and accessible outdoor experience rather than frequent commercial promotions. Their pricing is generally set to cover operational costs and support the conservation efforts of the foundation.

However, it's worth noting that the standard nightly rates for camping at Point Folly are often considered very reasonable, particularly for a lakeside location in Connecticut. Rates, for example, have been observed around $20 per night, which is quite competitive for the value and experience offered. This consistent affordability can be seen as an ongoing "special offer" for Connecticut locals looking for budget-friendly outdoor recreation.

Specific, time-limited promotions are not typically a feature of this type of operation. Any potential discounts would likely be related to:

  • Conservation Center Membership: Members of the White Memorial Conservation Center might receive discounts or priority booking for campground sites or other amenities within their properties. It's always a good idea to inquire about membership benefits.

  • Off-Peak Season Rates: While specific rates vary by season, camping outside of the peak summer months might offer a slightly different rate or more availability.

For the most current information on camping fees, availability, and any potential special circumstances, Connecticut residents should directly contact Point Folly Campground or the White Memorial Foundation. While lavish promotions aren't the norm, the inherent value and peaceful experience at Point Folly consistently make it an attractive option for those seeking an authentic outdoor escape.
