It's a place designed for convenience, ease of access, and a focus on getting you out onto the water or into the surrounding natural areas quickly and efficiently.
Pymatuning Lake itself is a massive reservoir, partly in Ohio and partly in Pennsylvania, renowned for its excellent fishing, particularly for walleye, muskellunge, and various panfish. The Ohio side, where Pikie Bay is located, provides a less crowded and more peaceful alternative for those looking to launch their boats or access hunting grounds. Reviews consistently highlight its affordability, lack of overcrowding, and the friendly service at the bait shop, making it a reliable and pleasant choice for Ohioans looking to make the most of their time on the water or in the field. It truly is a "great place to launch out of" for a day of outdoor enjoyment.
Pikie Bay is strategically located at 7100 Hoagland Blackstub Rd, Cortland, OH 44410, USA. This address places it squarely on the Ohio side of the vast Pymatuning Lake, a major reservoir that straddles the Ohio-Pennsylvania border. For Ohio locals, its position in Trumbull County makes it a readily accessible destination from various parts of Northeast Ohio and beyond.
Accessing Pikie Bay is generally very straightforward, as it's situated on a well-maintained road. Hoagland Blackstub Road provides a direct route to the boat launch facilities, making it easy for vehicles of all sizes, including those towing large boats or trailers, to navigate to the site. Its proximity to major state routes ensures that whether you're coming from Youngstown, Warren, Cleveland, or other surrounding communities, the journey is typically smooth and efficient. The design of the launch area itself is set up for quick and easy boat deployment, a critical factor for anglers and hunters eager to get on the water. This combination of an easy drive and efficient on-site access makes Pikie Bay a highly convenient and favored launch point for Ohio residents looking to utilize Pymatuning Lake for their recreational pursuits without the hassle of overcrowding often found at other access points.
While Pikie Bay is primarily a boat launch and access point rather than a traditional overnight campground, it offers essential services crucial for those engaging in fishing, hunting, and general lake recreation. These services are designed for convenience and to facilitate immediate outdoor pursuits.
- Boat Launch Ramp: The core service is a functional and well-maintained boat launch ramp, allowing easy deployment of watercraft onto Pymatuning Lake.
- Parking Facilities: Ample parking is available for vehicles, including those with trailers, for a nominal fee (noted as "a couple of dollars" or $3). This parking is generally not overcrowded, ensuring accessibility even during busier times.
- Bait Shop (on-site or nearby): Reviews mention a "bait store" or "bait shop" where anglers can purchase essential supplies like minnows. However, there's a specific note about minnow pricing ($4 a dozen) compared to other local options, indicating availability but also suggesting price awareness.
- Access for Fishing: The launch provides direct access to Pymatuning Lake, which is renowned for its fishing opportunities for various species including walleye, muskellunge, bass, and panfish.
- Access for Hunting: For hunters, Pikie Bay serves as a convenient launch point to access public hunting grounds around the lake or in nearby designated areas.
- Cleanliness (Implied): While not explicitly detailed for the entire area, the fact that users have "never had a problem with overcrowding" and praise the general "great place" implies a maintained and usable facility.
- Friendly Owners/Staff: The owners of the bait store are specifically mentioned as "very nice" and friendly, contributing to a positive experience for visitors.
It is important for users to understand that this is not an overnight camping facility. Services are geared towards day-use access to the lake and its surrounding recreational opportunities.
Pikie Bay, while focused on lake access, offers several key features and highlights that make it a preferred spot for Ohio locals engaged in fishing, hunting, and general recreation on Pymatuning Lake:
- Convenient Boat Launch: Its primary highlight is being a "great place to launch" boats, offering efficient and easy access to the vast waters of Pymatuning Lake for various watercraft.
- Affordable Parking: The nominal fee of "$3" or "a couple of dollars to park there" makes it a very cost-effective option for a day of lake recreation.
- Never Overcrowded: A significant advantage, as highlighted by a reviewer, is that they have "never had a problem with overcrowding." This ensures a more peaceful and less rushed experience, even during potentially busy times.
- Direct Access to Excellent Fishing: Pymatuning Lake is celebrated for its diverse and abundant fish populations. Pikie Bay provides direct access to prime fishing grounds for species like walleye, muskellunge, bass, and panfish.
- Gateway to Hunting Opportunities: For hunters, the launch serves as a strategic starting point to access public hunting lands and zones around the lake.
- Friendly Bait Store Owners: The "very nice" owners of the bait shop contribute to a positive and welcoming atmosphere, making quick stops for supplies pleasant.
- Scenic Lake Environment: While not a camping destination, the location offers picturesque views of Pymatuning Lake and the surrounding natural areas, enhancing the overall outdoor experience.
- Ohio Side Advantage: For Ohio residents, accessing the lake from the Ohio side often means avoiding some of the higher traffic or differing regulations that might be found on the Pennsylvania side of the lake.
- No Overnight Camping Focus: This lack of overnight camping facilities contributes to its non-overcrowded status and keeps the focus purely on day-use lake access, which is ideal for dedicated anglers and hunters.
As a public access point and boat launch, Pikie Bay typically does not offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense (like discounted stays or package deals). Its value proposition lies in its consistent service and affordability. However, certain aspects can be considered valuable "offers" for Ohio locals utilizing the facility:
- Affordable Daily Use Fee: The consistent low price of $3 for launching and parking is an ongoing "special offer" in itself, providing very cost-effective access to a large recreational lake.
- Consistent Availability and Low Crowds: The reliable fact that it's "never had a problem with overcrowding" can be seen as a perpetual "offer" – providing a stress-free and efficient launch experience, particularly on weekends or holidays when other ramps might be packed.
- On-Site Bait Shop Convenience: While minnow pricing is noted as higher, the mere presence of an on-site bait shop is a convenience that saves time and travel, allowing for quick last-minute purchases before heading out onto the lake.
- No Reservation Needed: As a daily use launch, typically no advance reservations are required, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips. This convenience is a form of value for locals.
- Gateway to Free State Park Activities: Being a part of the broader Pymatuning State Park system (Ohio side), use of Pikie Bay provides access to numerous other free or low-cost activities within the park, such as hiking trails, picnicking areas, and wildlife viewing opportunities around the lake.

Pikie Bay Reviews
Great place to launch for $3 but I would recommend stopping at the causeway bait shop if you need minnows cuz they want $4 a dozen here and that's exactly how many you will get. 12 minnows.
Jun 14, 2024 · Alex BrownThis is a great place to launch out of for either fishing or hunting. It's worth the couple of dollars to park there and I have never had a problem with overcrowding. The owners of the bait store are very nice.
Sep 07, 2023 · Angie LongOld boat launch owned by Amish. They cater to mostly Amish tourists however modern individuals can utilize the ramp for a low fee. Parking is almost non existent but the owners will find you somewhere to park. Must disconnect trailer from truck because space is limited. There is a bait shop on location which is nice.
