Pickaroon Campground

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Forest Road #512X, Encampment, WY 82325, USA

Absolutely love this place. Camped here in late June. Had the place to myself for a day or two, then the campground was about 50% full. Not much upkeep happening with the sites. Grass was very tall and home to a small snake. The sites back right up to the N Platte River, where 16" trout live. Plenty of dispersed camping available on the way in from FR 512. Vault toilet is near; no water on site. Bighorn sheep roam the ridges, eagles fly the skies and coyotes howl into the night. This is remote camping and a great place to unplug. - Chris Franklin

Pickaroon Campground Introduce

For Wyoming locals who truly appreciate an authentic, off-grid camping experience where the sounds of nature prevail and fishing opportunities are unparalleled, Pickaroon Campground is a hidden gem. Nestled deep within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, this primitive campground offers a quintessential Wyoming escape, far from the hustle and bustle of more developed areas. It's a destination for those who are self-sufficient, comfortable with basic amenities, and eager to immerse themselves in a wild landscape defined by a powerful river, towering ridges, and abundant wildlife. If your ideal getaway involves casting a line for large trout right from your campsite, spotting bighorn sheep on distant slopes, and falling asleep to the howls of coyotes, Pickaroon Campground is calling your name. This article will guide you through what makes Pickaroon a unique and rewarding experience for the adventurous Wyoming resident.

Pickaroon Campground is situated within the expansive Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, accessible via Forest Road #512X from Encampment, WY 82325, USA. Its location is truly remote, designed for those seeking to unplug and get away from it all. While the general address is Encampment, WY, the campground is not directly in town. It lies in a pristine section of the forest, with sites backing right up to the North Platte River.

Access to Pickaroon Campground is a crucial point for visitors, as it's described as "primitive" and "difficult to reach." While Forest Road #512 (often referred to as Douglas Creek Road or similar names leading to this area) generally provides the approach, the final descent into the campground itself involves "tight switchbacks on the final decent" that can be challenging for larger RVs (anything over 20 feet is noted to have difficulty). A 4-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended, especially if conditions are wet, as the terrain can become muddy. This challenging access, however, is precisely what preserves the wild and uncrowded nature of Pickaroon. It deters casual visitors, ensuring a more peaceful experience for those who make the journey. Despite its remote feel, the campground is a recognized access point to the North Platte River, famous for its fishing. Nearby, there is also plenty of dispersed camping available on the way in from Forest Road #512, offering even more secluded options for those prepared for true backcountry camping. Pickaroon's location allows for exploration of the broader Sierra Madre Range and provides a direct connection to the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest offers.

Services Offered

  • Primitive Campsites: Pickaroon Campground offers basic, primitive campsites, suitable for tents and smaller, more rugged RVs/trailers.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for outdoor meals.
  • Fire Rings with Grates: Individual fire rings with grates are available at each site, allowing for campfires and basic cooking (always check for current fire restrictions before lighting a fire).

  • No Potable Water: It is crucial to note that there is "no water on site." Campers must bring all their own drinking water or be prepared to filter/purify water from natural sources.
  • Trash Service (Limited/None): Given its primitive nature, campers should plan to "pack it in, pack it out" with all trash and waste. Bear-safe practices are essential.
