Pettengill Campground Introduce
For those of us who cherish Montana’s rugged, untamed beauty, Pettengill Campground offers a truly authentic wilderness experience. Tucked away on the scenic Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway near Wise River, this small, intimate campground provides a chance to disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural grandeur of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Unlike larger, more developed sites, Pettengill is designed for campers who appreciate simplicity and self-reliance, offering a quiet escape where the sounds of the Wise River and the rustling leaves replace the clamor of everyday life. It’s a perfect spot for tent campers and smaller RVs looking to truly get away from it all and enjoy the vast outdoor playground that is Montana.
The allure of Pettengill Campground lies in its remote yet accessible setting. It’s a place where you can feel the true spirit of the Montana wild, with ample opportunities for fishing in nearby waters and exploring numerous hiking trails. While it boasts a picturesque setting, particularly stunning in winter when the byway might be closed to vehicles, it's essential to arrive prepared for a more primitive camping experience. This campground embodies the essence of "Big Sky Country" camping – raw, beautiful, and deeply connected to nature.
Pettengill Campground is located within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, specifically along the picturesque Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway, near Wise River, MT 59762, USA. This placement makes it an integral part of one of Montana's most stunning scenic drives, offering campers breathtaking views and direct access to a vast network of outdoor recreational opportunities. The campground itself is situated where the Wise River meets Pettengill Creek, providing a lovely riparian setting for your stay.
Access to Pettengill Campground is primarily via the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway (Forest Service Road 73). From the intersection of Montana Highway 43 and the Scenic Byway, you proceed south on Highway 73 for approximately 10 miles to reach the campground. While the byway itself is well-maintained and mostly paved in this section, visitors should be aware that portions of the byway further south may transition to gravel or dirt surfaces, especially after Crystal Park. The scenic byway is typically open from mid-May through September, though exact dates can vary based on snowmelt and road conditions. During the winter months (typically December 1 through May 15), portions of the byway, including the section past the Pettengill parking lot, are often closed to vehicles and become a National Recreation Snowmobile Trail. This transformation offers a different kind of recreational access for those seeking winter adventures. Its location deep within the Pioneer Mountains means cell service may be limited, so having maps and directions downloaded beforehand is highly recommended.
Pettengill Campground offers basic amenities, emphasizing a rustic and self-sufficient camping experience. It's important for visitors to note that this is not a full-service campground, and coming prepared is key to a comfortable stay. The campground features a limited number of sites, typically three, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not accepted. Each site is equipped with essential camping fixtures to enhance your outdoor enjoyment without over-developing the natural environment.
A crucial detail for all visitors: there is no potable water available directly at Pettengill Campground. Campers must bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. Additionally, there is no garbage service on-site, adhering to a "pack it in, pack it out" policy to preserve the pristine nature of the area. This requires campers to be responsible for removing all their waste, helping to keep our wild spaces beautiful for everyone. The presence of handicapped-accessible vault toilets is a notable service, providing basic sanitation facilities. Each campsite includes an established fire ring for campfires (where permitted) and a picnic table, perfect for outdoor meals. Pets are allowed, but responsible pet ownership, including keeping them leashed and cleaning up after them, is expected.

- Tent camping units available.

The proximity to the Wise River provides excellent opportunities for fishing, particularly for trout. Hikers will find numerous trails in the vicinity, branching into the vast Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, offering stunning views and chances to spot local wildlife. It's a truly quiet and dark location, perfect for stargazing away from city lights. The historical context of the campground, named after an early homesteader, George Pettingill, adds a unique layer to the experience. Pettengill Campground Reviews
Nice spot but got my firewood stolen one day and a few days later someone robbed my hammocks sleeping bag, pad, and some other clothes/gear stashed in the hammock. The bag was a nice marmot dry down bag. Nearly $1000 worth of goods.
