Peterson Bridge South Campground

Wellston, MI 49689, USA

4.0
Host was really nice, campsites along the River were great. The fee structure is super confusing and disadvantages canoe campers. $35 per site for drive in (up to 8 people). $15 PER PERSON for the canoe and walk-in sites. And this being per person is not listed anywhere online or on the signage at the site. (Host said sign is being updated soon). It’s a ridiculous fee structure that a family of 3 will pay $45 for a walk-in site when 8 people can stay at a drive-in site for only $35. Make it make sense!? - Maia Hausler

This article will guide you through the allure of Peterson Bridge South Campground, detailing its picturesque location, the services and amenities it provides, its unique features and highlights, and why it's an ideal choice for Michigan residents looking to disconnect and recharge in nature.

Location and Accessibility

Peterson Bridge South Campground is located in Wellston, MI 49689, USA, within the sprawling Huron-Manistee National Forests. This prime location places it directly on the banks of the Pine River, a federally designated National Wild and Scenic River, known for its pristine waters and swift current. The campground is accessible from M-37, located just south of its junction with M-55.

Specifically, from Baldwin, MI, campers can take State Route 37 north approximately 21 miles to the campground sign, which appears just before the Pine River bridge. From the north, follow M-37 south 1.5 miles from its junction with M-55 and turn left after crossing the bridge. From the south, follow M-37 north 21.5 miles from Baldwin and turn right prior to crossing the bridge. Services Offered

Peterson Bridge South Campground is a U.S. Forest Service operated campground that focuses on providing a rustic experience with key amenities for comfort and convenience:

  • Diverse Campsite Options: The campground offers 31 sites, including both drive-in and walk-in/paddle-in options. Ten of these sites are specifically walk-in or paddle-in only, providing a more secluded experience, particularly for canoe campers.
  • First-Come, First-Served (FCFS) & Reservations: While many sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, a majority of the sites can be reserved online through Recreation.gov. Reservations typically need to be made at least three days in advance. It's advisable to check reservation status, especially during peak season, as walk-in sites can fill quickly.
  • Clean Restrooms: The campground features clean vault toilets. Reviewers consistently praise the cleanliness of these facilities, which is a significant advantage for a rustic campground.
  • Potable Water: Drinking water is available from pump wells within the campground, ensuring campers have access to fresh water.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, ideal for cooking and enjoying evening campfires.
  • No Firewood Sales: A heads-up from a previous camper: the campground "don’t sell firewood so make sure you have your own." Campers should plan to bring their own firewood or purchase it from local vendors before arriving.
  • Trash Collection: While some rustic sites require pack-in, pack-out, Peterson Bridge South Campground does have garbage bins available, contributing to a cleaner environment.
  • Host On-Site: A campground host is typically on-site, providing assistance and information. Reviewers note the host's helpfulness, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Fee Structure (Important Note): The fee structure can be a bit confusing. Drive-in sites are generally $35 per site (up to 8 people). However, walk-in/canoe sites are typically $15 PER PERSON. This distinction is crucial for canoe campers, as a family of three would pay $45 for a walk-in site compared to $35 for a drive-in site with more occupants. It's recommended to confirm current fees directly with the Forest Service or on Recreation.gov, as signage may be updated.
  • Quiet Hours: Forest quiet hours are enforced to ensure a peaceful environment for all campers.
