Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite Introduce
For those in Wisconsin seeking an unparalleled wilderness experience, where the journey to your campsite is as much a part of the adventure as the stay itself, the Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite offers a truly unique opportunity. Unlike traditional drive-up campgrounds, these special sites, such as the renowned Honkers Hideaway and Eagles Nest, are accessible primarily by boat or kayak, promising an exceptional level of privacy and immersion in nature. Nestled along the beautiful Peshtigo River near Crivitz, this destination is a dream for paddlers, anglers, and anyone yearning for a secluded escape into Wisconsin's wild heart.
The Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite is not just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an invitation to a different kind of outdoor living. Imagine paddling through serene waters, landing on a sandy bar, and setting up camp on a private island, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the river. It's a rustic and authentic experience that emphasizes self-reliance and deep appreciation for the natural world. For Wisconsin locals, particularly those with a love for paddling and a desire to truly disconnect, this offers a refreshing alternative to more crowded camping areas, providing a genuine sense of solitude and adventure that is increasingly rare to find.
The Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite is located near Crivitz, WI 54114, USA. While the general location is Crivitz, it's crucial to understand that these are not roadside sites. As the name suggests, and as confirmed by visitor reviews, these campsites are "only accessible by boat or kayak." This unique aspect of accessibility is a defining characteristic of the Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite, setting it apart from typical campgrounds.
For Wisconsin locals, reaching these sites requires planning and preparation. The approach to sites like Honkers Hideaway and Eagles Nest involves navigating the Peshtigo River. Reviews indicate that "landings are a sand bar except Eagles Nest which has a small dock." It's highly recommended to "come in through the North side as the water is very shallow and has a lot of plant growth." Therefore, "a fishing boat, jetboat, or kayak is best." If you're coming in with a larger boat, you'll need to "trim up and be prepared to clean out the seaweed" due to the shallow water and vegetation.
This boat-in accessibility makes it an ideal destination for those who already own kayaks, canoes, or small fishing boats. For others, local outfitters in the Crivitz area often provide canoe and kayak rentals, along with shuttle services, which can help facilitate access to these remote sites. The journey to the campsite itself becomes an integral part of the adventure, offering scenic views and a gradual immersion into the tranquil river environment. While it demands a bit more effort than pulling into a drive-up site, the reward is unparalleled privacy and a true sense of seclusion that is increasingly sought after by outdoor enthusiasts in Wisconsin. Being aware of fluctuating water depths is also important for safe navigation, as the river's conditions can change.

- Designated Campsites: Specific sites, such as Honkers Hideaway and Eagles Nest, are clearly designated. While offering privacy, these sites provide a legal and recognized place to camp overnight.
- Fire Rings: Each site is equipped with a fire ring, allowing campers to safely build campfires for cooking, warmth, and ambiance. This is a fundamental element of the rustic camping experience.
- Large Clearing for Tents: The campsites typically offer a generous clearing, providing ample space for setting up multiple tents, accommodating groups while still ensuring comfort.
- Primitive Toilets (Spider Thunderbox): A unique feature, "spider thunderboxes" (primitive pit toilets) are available at the campsites. While basic, they address sanitary needs in an environmentally responsible manner. Campers are advised to "bring toilet paper."

This isn't your average family campground with paved roads and extensive amenities; it's an invitation to a true wilderness adventure, perfectly aligned with the spirit of those who cherish Wisconsin's natural landscapes and waterways.
The defining characteristic—boat-in accessibility—is precisely what makes it ideal for the adventurous Wisconsinite. Many locals own kayaks, canoes, or small fishing boats, making the journey to these secluded island sites a natural extension of their existing hobbies. This method of access ensures a high degree of privacy, a commodity increasingly valued in popular outdoor areas. For those who feel that conventional campgrounds are becoming too crowded or developed, the Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite offers a refreshing escape, allowing for a deep immersion in nature without the distractions of a more populated setting.
The "awesome island" locations, such as Honkers Hideaway and Eagles Nest, provide a unique and memorable camping backdrop. Imagine waking up to the sounds of the river, surrounded by water and lush forest, with excellent fishing opportunities just steps from your tent. The clear, cold river water, lauded as the "best ice water I've ever had" by one enthusiastic reviewer, promises refreshing swims and a pristine environment. For local anglers, the quiet periods outside peak boating hours present a fantastic chance to catch various fish species that thrive in the Peshtigo River.
Furthermore, the rustic nature of the campsites—with fire rings, clearings for tents, and primitive thunderbox toilets—appeals to those who value self-reliance and a more traditional camping experience. It encourages preparation, respect for the environment (like bringing your own firewood and toilet paper, as advised), and a deeper connection to the outdoors. This "back-to-basics" approach is a fundamental aspect of wilderness camping that many Wisconsin residents actively seek out.
While the weekends might see increased boating activity on the river, the inherent privacy of the island sites ensures that peace and quiet are largely maintained within the campsites themselves. This balance allows locals to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the river during the day, perhaps engaging in paddling or fishing, and then retreat to their private sanctuary in the evenings for a tranquil night under the stars.
In essence, the Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite is perfectly suited for Wisconsinites who crave adventure, value privacy, and have an affinity for water-based recreation. It’s an opportunity to truly disconnect, challenge oneself with a unique access method, and revel in the raw, unspoiled beauty of Northern Wisconsin’s riverine landscape. Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite Reviews
Awesome island! Rocks absolutely rocked. Probably igneous, but I'm not a rock surgeon. Best ice water I've ever had. Brats were tasty, not so sure about Tanner's "cheese biscuit"... Spider thunderbox makes me feel safe.
Feb 08, 2025 · Jesse PetersonWe camped at Honkers Hideaway which shares the island with the Eagles nest. Don't worry, they're not close enough to interfere with each other and offers a lot of privacy. Be warned though, these sites are only accessible by boat or kayak. The landings are a sand bar except eagles nest which has a small dock. It is best to come in through the North side as the water is very shallow and has a lot of plant growth. A fishing boat, jetboat, or kayak is best. Otherwise trim up and be prepared to clean out the seaweed. The site offers a fire ring, a large clearing for tents, and a toilet in the ground. Bring toilet paper and fire wood! The weekends during the summer get a little busy with boating during the day, and is great for fishing outside peak boating hours. Get familiar with the water depth because it does fluctuate quite a bit. I highly recommend this site and area, it was really unique!
