Peaceful River Campground is situated at 42 Peaceful River Rd, Millboro, VA 24460, USA. This address places it within Bath County, a stunning mountainous region of Virginia known for its natural beauty, thermal springs, and pristine waterways. For locals across Virginia, particularly those seeking a tranquil and relatively remote outdoor experience, Millboro offers an ideal setting.
Accessing the campground requires navigating a "dirt, narrow, and rough" road, as noted by a reviewer. This detail is important for visitors to consider, especially those with larger RVs or trailers. While the road may be challenging, it contributes to the campground's secluded and peaceful atmosphere, particularly during weekdays. This less-traveled path helps maintain the natural tranquility that campers seek here.
The campground's most significant location highlight is its direct adjacency to a "beautiful river." While the specific river isn't named in the provided reviews, its presence is a primary draw. This riverfront setting allows for easy access to fishing and enjoying the sounds of flowing water. Millboro, though a small community, provides a sense of being truly "away from it all," allowing for deep immersion in nature. Visitors should plan to bring all their "food and necessities," as nearby amenities are limited due to the remote nature of the location. This combination of beautiful, natural surroundings and a degree of remoteness makes Peaceful River Campground highly suitable for Virginians looking to unplug and embrace a true wilderness experience.
Peaceful River Campground embraces a rustic and primitive camping philosophy, meaning its services are focused on providing essential utilities and access to nature rather than extensive modern amenities. This aligns with its appeal as a quiet and peaceful retreat. Based on customer reviews, here's what campers can expect:
- Campsites: The campground offers various campsites, including "campsites with no hookups, right on the water." Some sites are explicitly noted for "day use" and are described as large, even if "a little awkward" in layout. While there are sites without hookups, the mention of a "dump station" suggests the possibility of some RV-friendly sites, though full sewer hookups are explicitly stated as not available.
- Bathhouse: A bathhouse is available, providing essential facilities. However, it was noted as "old and smelly" by a reviewer, suggesting it might not meet the standards of more modern campgrounds.
- Dump Station: There is a "garbage dump" (likely referring to waste disposal) or a "dump station" for RVs, which is a crucial service for campers bringing their own vehicles.
- Water Access: While water is available, reviews note that "the water turns everything a yucky brown" and "it stinks and tastes bad," leading campers to use "bottled water for everything." It also reportedly "dried our skin so badly, we turned white," indicating that the on-site water quality might be an issue for personal use.
- No Sewer Hookups: It is explicitly stated that "no sewer hookups" are available, reinforcing the primitive nature of the campground.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Pits: While a specific reviewer noted "No picnic table or fire pit at our site," they also mentioned these items "are available," suggesting some sites or communal areas may be equipped.
- Limited Amenities: The campground does not offer a pool, playground, or other recreational facilities typically found at larger, amenity-rich campgrounds. The river itself is highlighted as the main attraction.
It is clear that campers at Peaceful River Campground should be prepared for a minimalist experience, bringing most of their own necessities and being aware of the limited infrastructure. This contributes to its appeal for those seeking a more rugged, natural camping environment.
Peaceful River Campground, despite its primitive nature, offers several compelling features and highlights that draw campers seeking a tranquil and authentic wilderness experience in Virginia. Its natural setting and the river are undoubtedly the main attractions.
- Beautiful Riverfront Setting: The most prominent highlight is the "beautiful river" that flows through or alongside the campground. This provides stunning views, soothing sounds of flowing water, and direct access for various river activities.
- Peace and Quiet (Weekdays): The campground is described as "very peaceful" and "quiet" during weekdays. This makes it an ideal retreat for those looking to escape noise and truly relax in nature.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: Reviews mention "caught some nice Rainbows to boot!" indicating that the river is well-stocked and offers great fishing, particularly for trout. This is a significant draw for anglers.
- Large, Shaded Sites: While some sites might be "a little awkward," the "large" spaces and "big, beautiful trees" provide ample room and natural shade, reducing the need for awnings and offering a comfortable natural environment.
- Immersive Nature Experience: The overall atmosphere allows campers to truly "enjoying the peace and quiet" and be immersed in the natural surroundings, including the sounds of the river and sightings of local wildlife.
- Long-Term Camping Community: The presence of "almost every camper in there are permanent fixtures. Like for.ev.er," suggests a close-knit community of long-term residents. For those looking for a seasonal or extended stay, this could mean a welcoming and stable environment.
While the campground prioritizes nature over extensive amenities, these highlights underscore its appeal for specific types of campers: those who value genuine tranquility, excellent fishing, and a return to basic, unadulterated outdoor living in a beautiful Virginia setting. The stunning river is, without a doubt, the star attraction.
Based on the provided customer reviews and the "primitive" nature of Peaceful River Campground, it is highly unlikely that they offer commercial promotions, discounts, or special offers in the traditional sense, such as seasonal sales or package deals. Primitive campgrounds often operate with straightforward daily rates that reflect their minimalist service model.
The reviews indicate a focus on "day use" spaces and "campsites with no hookups, right on the water," suggesting a simple pricing structure based on site type. The mention of "almost every camper in there are permanent fixtures. Like for.ev.er" strongly implies that long-term or seasonal rates are available and popular. This would be a key "special offer" for locals, as it provides an affordable option for extended stays or regular use of a tranquil, riverfront spot.
- Long-Term/Seasonal Rates: While specific pricing isn't provided, the high number of "permanent fixtures" suggests that highly competitive or flexible long-term rates are a de facto "promotion" for those looking to establish a more enduring presence at the campground.
- Daily Rates: These would be standard, based on whether the site is for day use or overnight camping, and potentially if any limited hookups (e.g., electric only, if available beyond current information) are present.
To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on any available rates, particularly for long-term stays, or to inquire about the possibility of securing a "permanent fixture" type of arrangement, it is essential to contact Peaceful River Campground directly. Given the note about "Communication isn't very good, and made me very nervous," it would be advisable to be persistent or try various contact methods to ensure you get the information you need directly from them.

It is important to note the customer review mentioning that "Communication isn't very good, and made me very nervous." This suggests that while phone numbers are provided, reaching someone or getting quick responses might require patience or multiple attempts. It is highly recommended to call well in advance of your planned trip, especially if you have specific questions about site availability, water quality, or long-term stay options. Given the primitive nature and remote location, confirming details directly with the campground prior to arrival is crucial for a smooth experience.

This isn't the campground for everyone, but for the right local, it offers an authentic escape that few other places can match.
The primary appeal for locals lies in its profound tranquility, especially during weekdays. In our increasingly busy lives, finding a spot that is "very peaceful" and "quiet" allows for true rejuvenation. The location along a "beautiful river" provides a constant, soothing backdrop, offering excellent opportunities for fishing for "Rainbows" or simply unwinding by the water's edge. This direct access to natural beauty is a significant draw for Virginia residents seeking to truly disconnect.
Furthermore, for those who appreciate a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience, Peaceful River Campground fits the bill. It’s a place where "big, beautiful trees" provide natural shade, reducing the need for elaborate setups. While amenities are basic (e.g., "old and smelly" bathhouse, no sewer hookups), this minimalistic approach appeals to seasoned campers who prefer simplicity and are prepared to bring their own necessities, including bottled water due to the on-site water quality. This focus on the essentials means the core experience – nature – remains front and center.
The presence of "almost every camper in there are permanent fixtures" suggests a unique, stable, and possibly close-knit community of long-term residents. For Virginians looking for a recurring seasonal spot or a semi-permanent base in a serene natural setting, this aspect makes Peaceful River Campground a highly attractive and practical option, offering a sense of belonging amidst the wilderness.

It's a place to shed the modern world and truly enjoy the peace the river offers.

Mar 25, 2025 · Cindi MarshallJudy and I just returned from 3 days enjoying the peace and quiet at Peaceful River Campground! Was cold and beautiful by the river and caught some nice Rainbows to boot!Harvested some pics and released them to swim away to make someone else's day!Looking forward to returning in the spring!
Nov 18, 2021 · Chubby DamronPeaceful River is a decent place to car camp. It has clean bathrooms and a shower. The tent sites have their own spot right on the river with a large gravel bar. The river is beautiful. Each tent site has a picnic table and fire ring. There’s no water spigot by the tent sites but I found one up near the road. RV lots share a different part of the campground for summer and weekend stays. No one was around during my midweek visit in late March. I would camp here again.
Apr 30, 2023 · Mandi BunI went tent camping in March and the grounds were beautiful and peaceful. There are a dozen covered places for RV's...most were filled. There are three large tent sites with firepits. The tent sites are on flat, level ground right on the river. There is no check-in station so call ahead to reserve your site. I talked to John and he was a gracious guy. Tent space was $25/night. Firewood was extra.
Mar 07, 2021 · Benjamin NeimanA great place to stay if you know what you're getting yourself into. The name of the campground is a good description of what to expect. You'll find a quiet campground on the banks of the pristine Cowpasture River. Perfect for relaxing, fishing, floating, etc... Just be aware that this campground is not modern by any means. In terms of hook ups, expect 30-amp electric, water, and no sewer. They do have a dump station, but no sewer connection at your site. They also have a bathhouse that is very old and run down. To be honest, the shower in the men's room looks like a murder scene. The women's room is more clean. With that being said, we still enjoyed our stay. The people were friendly, campground was quiet, and you could enjoy the river just outside of your camper. Things to do in the area if you visit; the Walton Tract, Hot Springs Bathhouse, the Omni Homestead Resort. We would stay here again, just be prepared to shower in your camper and have a plan to deal with your gray water if you're doing an extended stay.
