I would said a 5 star but they are revamping the park and there is lot of construction and the only sites are all jam together. The view is amazing and lots of walking areas. Next year it will be a 5 star Park for sure. We still had a great time. - Rich Mitchell

Paul B. Johnson Camping Introduce

For those of us in Mississippi who cherish the outdoors, finding a welcoming and well-maintained spot to enjoy nature is always a priority. Paul B. Johnson Camping, nestled within the beautiful Paul B. Johnson State Park in Hattiesburg, has long been a beloved destination. It's a place where the serene beauty of Geiger Lake meets the lush landscape of the pine belt region, offering a quintessential Mississippi outdoor experience.

Paul B. Johnson State Park has recently embarked on significant revitalization efforts, promising an enhanced experience for all visitors. While undergoing exciting renovations, the park continues to welcome guests, demonstrating its commitment to providing a top-tier outdoor escape. These improvements are designed to ensure that the park remains a premier choice for camping, fishing, boating, and simply relaxing amidst nature. The vision is to create an even more comfortable and modern facility while preserving the natural charm that makes it so special to Mississippians.

Known for its diverse accommodation options, Paul B. Johnson Camping caters to a wide array of preferences, from RV enthusiasts seeking full hookups to those who prefer the rustic charm of tent camping or the comfort of a lakeside cabin. The park's commitment to continuous improvement, even during active construction phases, highlights its dedication to visitor satisfaction. As locals, we understand the value of investing in our state's natural treasures, and the upgrades at Paul B. Johnson Camping signify a bright future for outdoor recreation in the Hattiesburg area. It's an invitation to experience a refreshed and even more inviting natural retreat right in our backyard.

Paul B. Johnson Camping is located within Paul B. Johnson State Park at 319 Geiger Lake Road, Hattiesburg, MS 39401, USA. This prime location places it approximately 15 miles south of Hattiesburg, easily accessible via Highway 49. Hattiesburg is a significant regional center, well-connected by major routes like US-98 and US-49, and reasonably close to Interstate 59, making the park a convenient destination for travelers from across Mississippi and beyond.

The park's setting around the 225-acre Geiger Lake is a significant aspect of its accessibility. While the main entrance might present a "fancier" building and lead over a safe spillway, the roads within the campground are designed for RVs and trailers, though some areas may require careful navigation for two large vehicles to pass. During the ongoing renovations, specific access points or campsite availability may vary, so it's always advisable to consult the park's official website or call ahead for the most current information regarding accessible areas and any temporary changes to routing within the park.

The park's design includes well-kept grounds and paved roads in the developed camping areas. For those with larger rigs, it's worth noting that while older sites might have asphalt pads, newer sites often feature more level concrete pads, improving the ease of setup. While the park maintains a peaceful atmosphere, its proximity to Hattiesburg ensures that essential services, grocery stores, and medical facilities are within a reasonable drive, providing a comfortable balance between wilderness immersion and necessary conveniences.

  • Recreational Amenities: Beyond water activities and trails, the park often includes a splash pad (seasonal), playgrounds, picnic areas with tables and grills (some overlooking the lake), disc golf courses, and two tennis courts.
  • Renovations and Upgrades: The ongoing multi-million dollar renovations (with a soft reopening of campgrounds in June 2025 and cabins in July 2025) are a major highlight, promising significantly improved facilities, including upgraded roads, wider concrete pads, and fully renovated bathhouses and campsites, ensuring a more modern and comfortable stay.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: Dogs are allowed in the campground and on trails, provided they are on a leash (no longer than 6 feet) and properly cleaned up after. Pets are generally not allowed in the lake or inside lodging.
