While the campground offers a sense of remote wilderness, it's not entirely isolated. Access from major California cities generally involves a scenic drive through diverse landscapes. Depending on your starting point in California, you might travel through agricultural valleys, rolling foothills, and then ascend into the majestic Sierra Nevada. Campsites: Packsaddle Campground provides a variety of campsites designed to accommodate different group sizes and preferences. While specific details on the number and type of sites may vary, general amenities typically include a picnic table and fire ring at each site.
Bear Boxes: Essential for safe food storage in bear country, bear boxes are provided at campsites. It's crucial for campers to utilize these to secure all food and scented items, protecting both their belongings and local wildlife.
Restrooms: Basic restroom facilities are generally available, though campers should be prepared for vault toilets, which are common in more rustic campground settings. Maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility among campers.
Water Access: While the availability of potable water can sometimes vary by season or specific campground policies, many forest service campgrounds offer some form of water access, whether it's a hand pump or a spigot. It's always advisable to bring your own water or a reliable filtration system as a backup.
Proximity to Trails: While not a direct service, the campground's immediate access to hiking trails, including the PCT, is a significant benefit. This allows campers to embark on various outdoor activities directly from their site.
Pacific Crest Trail Access: This is undoubtedly one of Packsaddle Campground's most significant features. The ability to connect directly with the PCT offers unparalleled hiking opportunities, whether you're tackling a short section or supporting a thru-hiker. Proximity to Tamarack Lake Trail: A popular local trail, the Tamarack Lake trail offers another fantastic hiking option directly accessible from the campground. This trail provides opportunities for exploring the local flora and fauna and enjoying the tranquility of a high-altitude lake.
Unplug and Reconnect: As noted by visitors, cell service and Wi-Fi are often limited or nonexistent at Packsaddle Campground. While this might seem like a drawback to some, it's a major highlight for those seeking a true digital detox. It encourages campers to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature, family, and themselves.
Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The natural setting means opportunities to observe local wildlife. While bear safety is paramount, other animals like deer, various bird species, and smaller mammals can often be spotted, adding to the wilderness experience.
Peaceful and Secluded Atmosphere: For those looking to escape crowded urban environments, Packsaddle offers a relatively peaceful and secluded atmosphere. While popular, it generally maintains a sense of tranquility, allowing campers to fully relax and enjoy their surroundings.
Horse Stalls: The presence of horse stalls suggests that the campground is also suitable for equestrian campers, offering a unique experience for those who wish to explore the trails on horseback. This is a significant draw for a specific niche of outdoor enthusiasts.

Packsaddle Campground Reviews
"I picked up breakfast at Tahoe House Bakery before I made my way north up towards the PCT connection near Sierra City. Inspired and intrigued by thru-hikers that chose to make the 3,000+ mile trip, getting a chance to camp near the trail gave me an access to the life that eludes me.Site #11 was smaller than the rest, but with fields surrounding it my imagination ran with the idea of those looking for magic along this same path. It was a windy valley, so instead of the starry skies I love, I put on the fly and staked down an Ozark Trail 5-person mini-mansion. No wi-fi at this site, but the views at sites 12 and 13 make me want to return to unplug and explore. In the morning I hiked nearby Tamarack Lake trail and found the PCT connection, one of the 8 trails I love. #108isMagic."
Jul 06, 2021 · Brittney HikesPacksaddle is a good campsite. We camped at site 15, which is right in front of the horse stalls. The only issue we had with the site was that the bear box was a little rundown, and we had to search for it handle that happened to be broken off. Be prepared for a little bit of wind and meat bees, but no mosquitos during our visit.
Aug 15, 2024 · Ethan McgrawIn the shadow of the beautiful Sierra Buttes , packsaddle is an great place to camp . One of favorite spots ! Lots of hiking trails .
Aug 24, 2019 · Mark RichardsonI love this place, me and my family go camping here every year for the anual fishing derby the views are buetiful the lake is close and there is a ton of room for the kids to go explore. I've been going to this campsite for around 10 years and have never seen a bear or heard stories about them going into the camps. There's also alot of cool secrets if you look around the area enough. If you go to the far side of the camp you'll find a secret little streem that leads to a small pond perfect for a quiet quick dip. There's also a mine entrance behind the campsite with the horse area. It's been blocked off with bars but it is possible to get in.
Dec 22, 2021 · Hadley TeaterNice campground that allows tents, campers/RV (no hookups), horses, dogs and kids. Nice outhouse, hand potable water pump, tables, food lockers and convenient dumpsters. Some sites are nicer than others. Reserve 6 months in advance. Hiking biking, riding, boating & fishing in nearby lakes.
