O'Leary Campground

Campground ★4.0

Flagstaff, AZ 86004, USA

4.0
Amazing campground. The hosts were friendly and checked on us throughout our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. The campground was clean, well maintained, and the bathroom was clean! We will definitely stay here again, by far one of my favorite campsites. Also the area is beautiful and there is no cell reception...making the camping experience so much better. - Daniel Hill

O'Leary Campground Introduce

For Arizonans looking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of the high country, O'Leary Campground offers an unparalleled experience. Tucked away within the magnificent Coconino National Forest, this campground provides a serene and well-maintained basecamp for exploring the unique volcanic landscape of Northern Arizona. Unlike many popular campgrounds that are bustling and loud, O'Leary is known for its peaceful atmosphere and the simple joy of being surrounded by nature. It's a place where the sound of the wind in the ponderosa pines replaces the noise of the city, and the night sky is so dark that the stars become the main event. It is a fantastic destination for families and groups who want to get back to the basics of camping without sacrificing cleanliness and safety.

O'Leary Campground is conveniently located about 13 miles north of Flagstaff, AZ 86004, USA. This makes it easily accessible for local residents from across the state who are looking for a quick and rewarding escape. To reach the campground, you'll take Highway 89 north from Flagstaff and then turn onto Forest Road 545, which leads you directly to the area. The accessibility of this location is a major plus, as it means you can be out of the heat of the desert and into the cool, refreshing pines in just a couple of hours. The campground itself is located just before the entrance to the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, making it an ideal spot for those planning to explore the monument's trails and visitor center. While the campground is in a somewhat remote setting, it is well-maintained and provides designated on-site parking at each campsite.

The services offered at O'Leary Campground are straightforward and designed to support a traditional camping experience. While it is not a full-service RV park, it provides the essential amenities that make for a comfortable and enjoyable stay in the wilderness.

  • Tent Sites: The campground is primarily set up for tent camping, with sites that are spacious and well-spaced, providing privacy. The ground is often covered in volcanic cinders, making for a relatively soft and level place to pitch a tent.
  • Public Restrooms: Clean and well-maintained public restrooms, or vault toilets, are available on-site. Reviews from campers consistently highlight the cleanliness of these facilities, which is a significant factor for any camping trip.
  • Running Water: Running water is available at various "rotundas" or central spigots throughout the campground, so campers do not need to bring their entire water supply, although it is always recommended to have a backup.
  • Camp Hosts: Reviews consistently mention the friendly and helpful camp hosts who check on campers and ensure that everyone has what they need, adding a layer of security and convenience to your stay.
  • Group Camping: O'Leary is well-known as a group campground with three group sites that can accommodate large gatherings, making it a great option for scouting troops, family reunions, or other large parties.

O'Leary Campground’s true highlights are its natural features and its prime location for exploring some of Arizona's most unique landscapes.

  • Proximity to National Monuments: The campground is situated near both the Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments. This offers campers a rare opportunity to explore the geology and history of the area, including ancient volcanic formations and Native American ruins, all within a short walk or drive.
  • Hiking Opportunities: The area is a hiker's paradise. There are numerous trails, both long and short, that wind through the volcanic and forested landscapes. A popular and rewarding hike is to the O'Leary Lookout Tower, which provides a panoramic view of the San Francisco Peaks and the surrounding high desert.
  • Stargazing: Because the campground is located far from city lights, it offers incredible views of the night sky. Campers consistently praise the opportunity to see a full canopy of stars, which is a truly special experience for Arizonans more accustomed to light pollution.
  • True Disconnection: One of the most-loved features is the lack of cell reception. This forces campers to unplug and truly enjoy their surroundings and the company they are with, making the camping experience "so much better," as one reviewer noted.
  • Peace and Quiet: The quiet, well-maintained atmosphere is a highlight. The generously spaced campsites ensure that you feel like you have your own private space, which contributes to a very peaceful and relaxing stay.

For information regarding reservations and current conditions, it's best to contact the Coconino National Forest directly. While the general address is Flagstaff, AZ 86004, USA, the specific contact for the Forest Service is the best resource for the most up-to-date information on the campground.

Reservations are handled through a national service, and it's recommended to check for availability, especially for the group sites. The number to call is a toll-free reservation line.

What makes it worth choosing is its ability to provide a peaceful, clean, and well-maintained camping experience in a truly unique natural setting. For those who want to escape the constant buzz of technology and city life, the lack of cell service is a major benefit that encourages a real connection with nature and fellow campers.
