Northend Camp

Olga, WA 98279, USA

4.0
The campground is ok but there are a lot of campsites and not enough facilities. For the entirety of the North end campground there are two showers total.. one in mens and one in women's bathroom. For such a large family friendly place, it's not enough to have only one shower in the bathrooms. There's no separate changing area which also clogs up the line to the shower.Pluses tho-Having a shower was a plus and is easy to get to. We had cell service and the location was good with good access to trails. The island is beautiful so definitely worth visiting. No electric access for tent sites and the campsites for tents at least are pretty small. I didn't like that ours had such a hill to get down to the campsite from the parkin area. Some sites had stairs, ours at 101 did not. Such pain going up and down from the car after so much hiking. The campsites are pretty close to each other and lots of loud screeching children. No offense to the families but probably better for people with kids than couples looking for a getaway. - Amanda

For Washington locals, accessing Orcas Island typically involves a scenic ferry journey from Anacortes, Washington. The island's main roads are generally well-maintained, accommodating various vehicle types, including those towing RVs, though campers should always be mindful of island driving conditions.

The campground's location within Moran State Park means campers have immediate access to a wealth of activities without needing to drive far from their campsite. This includes direct access to "trails around the lake," as highlighted by a visitor, and other park amenities. While the campground offers a feeling of being immersed in nature, its proximity to smaller communities on Orcas Island means essential services are within reach if needed, striking a balance between wilderness and convenience. The natural beauty of the island ensures that the journey to Northend Camp is as much a part of the adventure as the stay itself, making it a truly Washingtonian outdoor experience.

Northend Camp, operating within the framework of Moran State Park, offers a foundational set of services for campers, focusing on essential needs for an outdoor stay:

  • Campsites: Provides numerous campsites, accommodating both tent campers and potentially some RVs, though reviews mention "No electric access for tent sites."
  • Restrooms: Facilities with flush toilets are available for camper use.
  • Showers: There are "two showers total... one in mens and one in women's bathroom" for the "entirety of the North end campground." While praised for existing and being "easy to get to," their limited number for a "large family friendly place" can lead to queues and lack of "separate changing area."
  • Potable Water: Access to fresh drinking water spigots throughout the campground.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is typically equipped with a picnic table for outdoor dining and a fire ring for campfires (when permitted).
  • Garbage Disposal: Designated areas for waste disposal are provided to maintain cleanliness.
  • Cell Service: As noted by a customer, "We had cell service," which can be a valuable service for staying connected or for emergencies, even while enjoying the outdoors.
  • Pet-Friendly: The campground is noted as a "great place for... pets," indicating it welcomes furry companions, a significant plus for many Washington families.
  • On-site park staff/camp hosts: Often present to assist campers and oversee park operations.
  • Direct Trail Access: A major service, offering immediate entry to "the surrounding trails around the lake."

Northend Camp within Moran State Park is characterized by several key features and highlights that shape the camper experience on Orcas Island:

  • Beautiful Setting: The campground is situated in a naturally "beautiful setting," offering a picturesque backdrop for an outdoor getaway, typical of the stunning landscapes found throughout Orcas Island and Moran State Park.
  • Access to Amazing Trails: A significant highlight is the "good access to trails" and that "The surrounding trails around the lake are awesome!" This makes it an ideal base for hikers and those who love to explore on foot, providing ample opportunities for outdoor exercise and enjoying nature.

  • Cell Service: The availability of "cell service" is a notable plus, offering a convenient way to stay connected or for emergencies, a feature not always guaranteed in remote camping locations.
  • Family and Pet-Friendly: Echoing a positive review, it's described as a "great place for families, pets, solo travelers, and groups alike." This inclusive atmosphere makes it accessible to a wide range of Washington locals.
  • Pristine and Beautifully Maintained Campsites: One reviewer specifically praised their campsite for being "pristine and beautifully maintained with plenty of amenities," suggesting a high standard of upkeep.
  • Orcas Island Beauty: The overarching highlight is the island itself. As one reviewer aptly puts it, "The island is beautiful so definitely worth visiting." Northend Camp provides a direct gateway to experience this beauty.
  • Natural Immersion: Despite being a state park campground, it offers a deep immersion in nature, with the sounds and sights of the forest and lake.
  • Opportunities for Solo Travelers & Groups: Its suitability for various types of travelers beyond just families indicates a versatile environment.
  • Considerations (Campsite Size/Layout, Shower Availability, Noise): While primarily positive, it's worth noting some aspects mentioned by a reviewer for full transparency: "campsites are pretty small" for tents, some have "a hill to get down to the campsite from the parking area" and "No electric access for tent sites." The limited number of showers and potential "loud screeching children" (suggesting it's more suited for families with kids than quiet getaways for couples) are also points to consider.
