North Island West S13 Campsite

Crane Lake, MN 55725, USA

4.0
Absolutely beautiful location but like previously mentioned, not a lot of flat ground other than camp pads and the mosquitos by the toilet were really, really bad. Having a dock for the boat in a massive thunderstorm was critical though and the fishing was ok from the island/dock. Surrounding bays were decent for fishing and great spot to get up through the Namakan narrows. - Brett Halverson

Services Offered

North Island West S13 Campsite, as a designated frontcountry campsite within Voyageurs National Park, provides essential amenities designed to enhance the wilderness camping experience while maintaining the park's natural integrity. While it offers more than a primitive backcountry site, it still emphasizes self-sufficiency.

  • Permanent Crib Dock: A significant advantage of North Island West S13 Campsite is its dedicated 8x20 permanent crib dock. This feature is invaluable for boat-in access, providing a secure place to moor your boat, especially during changing weather conditions, as noted by customer reviews. It also makes loading and unloading gear much easier.

  • Designated Tent Pads: The campsite offers cleared, relatively flat tent pads for pitching tents. Reviews indicate there are typically two tent pads. While the overall terrain of the island might be rocky or uneven, these pads provide a suitable and comfortable sleeping surface, helping to minimize impact on the environment.

  • Picnic Table: Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, and other camp activities.

  • Fire Ring: A designated fire ring is provided for campfires. This helps to contain fires, reduce wildfire risk, and minimize scarring of the natural landscape. Campers are expected to use dead and downed wood for fires and to ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving.

  • Bear-Resistant Food Lockers: To protect both human visitors and wildlife, the campsite is equipped with two bear-resistant food lockers. These are crucial for safely storing all food, scented items, and trash, preventing unwanted encounters with bears and other animals.

  • Outdoor Privy (Vault Toilet): A non-flush vault toilet, often referred to as a "privy" or "outhouse," is available at the campsite. While rustic, these facilities are designed to manage human waste properly and are typically serviced by the park. Reviews mention mosquitoes can be an issue around the toilet, so bug spray is advisable.

Features / Highlights

North Island West S13 Campsite boasts several appealing features that contribute to its popularity and offer a memorable experience in Voyageurs National Park.

  • Private Island Experience: One of the most significant highlights is the opportunity for island camping. Being on an island provides a heightened sense of privacy and seclusion, away from the sounds of other campers typically found in drive-in campgrounds. This truly makes you feel like you have your own piece of the park.

  • Dedicated Dock: The permanent crib dock is a major asset, offering a secure and convenient mooring point for your boat. As noted in reviews, this is "critical" during inclement weather and makes accessing the site with gear much easier. It also provides a stable platform for fishing from the site.

  • Gateway to Voyageurs Waters: From North Island, campers have direct access to the vast interconnected waterways of Voyageurs National Park, including Crane Lake, Namakan Lake, and beyond. This allows for extensive exploration by boat, reaching numerous bays, historical sites, and fishing hot spots. The site is a "great spot to get up through the Namakan Narrows."

  • Fishing Opportunities: Crane Lake and the surrounding waters of Voyageurs National Park are renowned for their excellent fishing, particularly for Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, and Black Crappie. While reviews mention fishing directly from the island/dock was "ok" and "meh" due to shallow water directly at the site, the proximity to productive surrounding bays means anglers have abundant opportunities to find good fishing just a short boat ride away.

  • Stunning Lake Views: Given its island location, S13 likely offers picturesque views of the expansive lake. While one review noted it faces south (which might limit breeze and thus worsen mosquitoes), this orientation could offer beautiful sun exposure during the day and potentially nice sunrise or sunset views depending on the exact angle.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Voyageurs National Park is home to abundant wildlife, including bald eagles, loons, deer, and black bears. The island setting provides opportunities to observe various bird species and other animals in their natural habitat.

  • Undeveloped Natural Terrain: While the tent pads offer flat ground, much of the island remains natural and rugged, with limited flat areas beyond the designated pads. This preserves the wilderness feel, appealing to those who appreciate a less manicured outdoor experience.

This boat-in island campsite provides a unique blend of adventure, solitude, and accessibility that makes it an ideal choice for locals.

For many locals, boating and fishing are integral parts of their summer traditions, and S13 provides an authentic setting for these activities. While requiring a boat, this accessibility is often less physically demanding than the portages of the BWCA, making it suitable for a wider range of ages and physical abilities who still desire a remote, non-drive-in experience. The presence of a private dock, as highlighted by actual campers, is a significant convenience, especially during the unpredictable Minnesota weather, providing safety and ease of access.

Secondly, the island location of S13 offers an unparalleled sense of privacy and seclusion. In a world where campsites can often feel crowded, having your own island retreat within a national park is a genuine luxury. This allows for deeper immersion in nature, where the sounds of civilization are replaced by the calls of loons and the gentle lapping of waves. It's a perfect environment for reconnecting with family and friends, or simply finding personal tranquility.

Furthermore, the campsite's strategic position provides direct access to the expansive and renowned fishing waters of Crane Lake and the broader Namakan Lake chain. While fishing directly from the campsite's dock might be "meh" for some species due to shallow waters, the surrounding bays and narrows are legendary for Walleye, Northern Pike, and other game fish, ensuring that avid anglers will find ample opportunities nearby. Being a gateway to the Namakan Narrows also means easy exploration of other parts of Voyageurs National Park, adding to the adventure.

Finally, camping at North Island West S13 is more than just a stay; it's an opportunity to connect with Minnesota’s natural heritage and contribute to its preservation. By respecting park regulations and practicing Leave No Trace principles, locals help safeguard this unique water wilderness for future generations. It’s an adventure that promises not just stunning views and great fishing, but also a profound sense of peace and a cherished bond with Minnesota's wild heart.
