This is my go to area for snow time it’s so magical. I’m going camping in the summer to explore the sites when the snow disappears but it’s so pretty even with snow. Definitely recommend and I’ve been going for three years now and always a beautiful place. They have bathrooms but no toilet paper in the winter at least. And only off the road parking since the parking lot is covered in snow. - Maria Loya

North Grove Campground Introduce

For Californians seeking an unforgettable connection with nature's giants, North Grove Campground offers a truly magical experience. Situated within the iconic Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Arnold, California, this campground provides a unique opportunity to camp among the majestic giant sequoias. It's a destination that transcends seasons, offering breathtaking beauty whether blanketed in snow or vibrant with summer foliage, making it a beloved retreat for locals across the state.

North Grove Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's an immersive gateway to one of California's most remarkable natural treasures. The campground is thoughtfully integrated into a mature conifer forest, providing a sense of seclusion and direct access to the awe-inspiring North Grove of Giant Sequoias. This proximity means that the park's towering wonders, historic sites, and educational programs are just a short walk away, enriching every visit.

The consistent praise from long-time visitors, some returning for over three years, underscores the campground's enduring appeal. Its ability to captivate in both winter and summer speaks to the profound beauty of the landscape and the diverse recreational opportunities available. Whether you're a seasoned camper or looking for a memorable family adventure, North Grove Campground promises an experience that combines natural grandeur with essential comforts, all within the accessible beauty of the Golden State.

North Grove Campground is ideally located at 1170 East Highway 4, Arnold, CA 95223, USA. This places it directly within Calaveras Big Trees State Park, one of California's most cherished state parks, known globally for its groves of giant sequoias. For Californians, reaching the campground involves a scenic drive up Highway 4 into the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains. The journey itself is part of the experience, winding through picturesque landscapes that gradually reveal the grandeur of the high country.

Accessibility to North Grove Campground is generally good. The park entrance is on a main highway, making it straightforward to find. However, visitors should be aware of seasonal variations. During winter months, the area receives significant snowfall, transforming the landscape into a "magical" winter wonderland. While the campground remains accessible, parking may shift to "off the road parking" as the main lot becomes "covered in snow." This means winter camping is more rustic and requires preparedness for snow conditions, including bringing your own toilet paper as supplies might be limited. In the summer, all sites are typically accessible. It's highly recommended to make reservations, especially for "the good sites," as they are "hard to come by" during peak season. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance via Reserve California or by phone. The campground is generally open from May 1 to November 1, with limited first-come, first-served sites available during the remainder of the year. This ensures year-round potential for adventure, catering to both summer and winter enthusiasts.

North Grove Campground provides a range of services designed to enhance the camping experience, blending natural immersion with essential conveniences.

  • Campsites: The campground offers 74 individual campsites (sites 1-74) suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs (up to 30 ft max RV length). Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a bear locker for proper food storage.
  • Group Campsites: Two mini-group campsites are available within North Grove, offering double the capacity and amenities of a regular site, ideal for larger families or small groups.
  • Restrooms: The campground includes flush toilets and running water in the restrooms, which are generally well-maintained. However, in winter, toilet paper might not be consistently stocked.
  • Coin Showers: Hot water showers are available for a fee (coin-operated), providing a welcome comfort after a day of exploring.
  • Dump Station: An RV sanitation dump station is located near the park entrance, and its use is included with campsite registration. Non-campers can use it for a fee.
  • Potable Water: Water spigots are available at each campsite, providing convenient access to potable water.
  • Food Storage Lockers: Due to the presence of black bears, each campsite includes a bear-proof food storage locker, emphasizing wildlife safety.
  • Camp Store/Visitor Center: The nearby Visitor Center and camp store offer ice, firewood, food, camping supplies, and park information.
  • Interpretive Programs: Throughout the summer, the park offers regularly scheduled interpretive programs, including campfire programs, guided walks, and Junior Ranger programs, enhancing the educational aspect of your stay.

North Grove Campground is celebrated for several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its appeal and provide a memorable experience for visitors.
