North Creek Campground Introduce
Are you a Virginia local seeking a genuine escape into the wild, a place where the sounds of a flowing creek and rustling leaves replace the clamor of everyday life? Look no further than North Creek Campground, a cherished primitive camping destination nestled within the stunning George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, just a short drive from Buchanan, Virginia. This campground offers a back-to-basics experience that’s been lauded by seasoned campers for its serene atmosphere, picturesque views, and direct access to some of Virginia’s most beautiful natural features. If you're looking to unplug, unwind, and truly connect with nature, North Creek Campground is an excellent choice right here in our Commonwealth.
For many Virginians, the allure of the outdoors is undeniable. We are fortunate to have vast national forests and a wealth of natural wonders right in our backyard. Camping at a place like North Creek allows us to step away from screens and schedules, and instead, embrace the simple joys of a campfire, the crisp mountain air, and the soothing sounds of a flowing stream. It's a place where families can bond, adventurers can explore, and anyone can find peace in the embrace of the wilderness. While North Creek Campground is known for its primitive nature, it's precisely this characteristic that makes it such a special and highly recommended spot for those who appreciate an authentic, unadulterated camping experience. It’s an opportunity to truly rejuvenate your spirit and create lasting memories amidst Virginia's stunning natural beauty.
North Creek Campground is strategically located at 2252 N Creek Rd, Buchanan, VA 24066, USA, within the expansive George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. This placement provides an idyllic, secluded setting, yet it remains surprisingly accessible for many Virginia residents.
One of the most appealing aspects of North Creek Campground's location is its proximity to Roanoke City, being only about 30 minutes away. This makes it a convenient option for a quick weekend getaway without extensive travel. For those traveling from I-81, the campground is easily reached by taking exit 168 (Arcadia) and following VA 614 (Jennings Creek Road) for approximately 2.9 miles through Arcadia to FS 59 (North Creek Road). A left turn onto FS 59 will lead you directly to the campground, which is about 2.4 miles ahead on your right. This straightforward access, coupled with its relatively close distance to a larger city, balances the desire for wilderness with the convenience of not being completely isolated. However, it's crucial for visitors to note that "no cell service at all" is a common experience at the campground. This highlights the truly primitive and disconnected nature of the site, which can be a welcome feature for some, but requires campers to plan accordingly for navigation and communication during their stay. The location along North Creek further enhances its appeal, offering immediate access to the tranquil waters.
North Creek Campground is a primitive campground, meaning it provides essential facilities for a rustic camping experience rather than extensive modern amenities. It caters to campers who prefer simplicity and a deeper connection with nature.
- Primitive Campsites: The campground offers both single and double campsites. Each unit typically includes a parking spur, a tent pad, a wooden picnic table, a fireplace (fire ring), and a lantern post.
- RV Campsites: RV campsites are available, though North Creek is better suited for smaller RVs (up to 22 feet). It’s important to note that there are no hookups for electricity, water, or sewer at individual sites, maintaining the primitive nature of the campground.
- Vault Toilets: Clean public vault toilets (outhouses) are provided for convenience. Visitors often appreciate their cleanliness, a crucial aspect of primitive camping.
- Potable Water: Central hand pumps are available for potable water, allowing campers to fill their water containers.
- Central Garbage Container: A central garbage container is provided for waste disposal, encouraging campers to keep the area clean and practice Leave No Trace principles.
- Trailer Waste Disposal: A trailer waste disposal system is available, though its accessibility for larger rigs may vary, so it's advisable to confirm if you have a big RV.
- Campground Hosts: During the summer months, campground hosts are often on-site to provide information and assistance, enhancing the camping experience.
- Firewood: While not explicitly sold on-site, campers are generally permitted to gather dead and downed wood for campfires within the national forest, or bring their own.
North Creek Campground truly shines through its natural features and the recreational opportunities it provides, making it a favorite among Virginia’s outdoor enthusiasts.
- Beautiful Views: Campers consistently rave about the "beautiful views" surrounding the campground, offering a scenic backdrop for your outdoor adventures.
- Creek-side Camping and Fishing: The campground is located directly along the edge of North Creek, allowing for serene creek-side camping units. This offers "fishing spots next to campsite," making it incredibly convenient for anglers to cast a line for stocked trout.
- Stocked Trout Stream: North Creek is a popular spot for trout fishing, being a regularly stocked stream. Anglers with a valid Virginia fishing license and a National Forest Stamp (and trout stamp when in season) can enjoy excellent fishing.
- Access to Hiking Trails: Several scenic hiking trails are easily accessible from the campground, including Whitetail, Cornelius Creek, and Apple Orchard Falls. These trails cater to various skill levels and provide opportunities to explore the "large expanse of National Forest land."
- Proximity to James River: While not directly on-site, the campground is close to the James River, offering opportunities for floating, canoeing, kayaking, and additional fishing.
- Peaceful and Connected to Nature: The remote setting and lack of cell service mean a genuine disconnection from the digital world, allowing campers to fully "connect with nature" in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere.
- First-Come, First-Served: Most campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips, though it's wise to arrive early during peak season.
- Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding national forest provides opportunities for observing local wildlife in their natural habitat.
As North Creek Campground is primarily operated by the U.S. Forest Service within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, its pricing structure is generally consistent and less prone to frequent commercial promotions. However, Virginia residents should be aware of the standard fees and potential discounts available.
Campsite fees are typically $16 per night for a single campsite and $30 per night for a double campsite (which can accommodate up to 12 people). These fees are paid on-site at a self-service kiosk, usually requiring cash or check. It is important to remember that this campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are generally not accepted, and securing a specific "promotion" is not the typical mode of operation.
For those holding specific passes, the America the Beautiful Senior and Access Passes provide a 50% discount on the base campsite fee. This is a significant benefit for eligible Virginians who regularly utilize national forest facilities. No other America the Beautiful Interagency passes are typically valid at this specific site for camping fee discounts.
To ensure you have the most current information on fees and any operational updates (like open season dates, which are generally mid-March to late-November), it's always best to contact the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts, which manage the campground. While there aren't traditional "sales," visiting during the quieter shoulder seasons might allow for more site availability and a more serene experience for the standard, affordable rates.
To plan your visit or to get more information about North Creek Campground, please use the following contact details:
- Address: 2252 N Creek Rd, Buchanan, VA 24066, USA
- Phone: (540) 291-2188 (Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts Office)
- Mobile Phone: +1 540-291-2188
Given that North Creek Campground typically operates on a first-come, first-served basis, direct reservations for individual sites are not usually accepted via phone. However, contacting the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts Office is highly recommended. You can inquire about current campground conditions, fire restrictions, water availability, and general operational status. This is especially important considering the known lack of cell service at the campground itself, allowing you to get all necessary information before you head out for your rustic Virginia camping adventure.
For residents of Virginia, North Creek Campground offers an unparalleled opportunity to truly disconnect and immerse yourselves in the natural splendor of our state. Its location, just 30 minutes from Roanoke City, strikes a perfect balance between accessibility and a genuine wilderness experience. This campground is ideal for Virginians who cherish simplicity, outdoor adventure, and the serene beauty of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
Locals will appreciate the primitive nature of the campsites, complete with fire rings and picnic tables, fostering an authentic camping atmosphere. The lack of cell service, while requiring some advance planning, is often cited as a highlight, enabling a true digital detox and deeper connection with nature and companions. The readily available fishing spots directly adjacent to the campsites, particularly in the stocked North Creek, are a significant draw for Virginia anglers. The beautiful views and access to renowned hiking trails like Apple Orchard Falls further enhance its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts.
While a previous visitor noted some maintenance needs for fire pits, the overall sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive, with campers returning year after year, giving it a five-star rating for its beautiful setting and the opportunity to connect with nature. North Creek Campground isn’t just a place to stay; it’s an invitation to experience the tranquil and rugged side of Virginia, offering an affordable and authentic escape. It’s a perfect spot for a weekend getaway, a family adventure, or a solo retreat, making it an excellent choice for any Virginia resident looking for a memorable and rejuvenating outdoor experience close to home.

North Creek Campground Reviews
This will be our third or fourth year camping at this campground and we love it. I give it five stars. Now I do have a question in my review so hopefully someone sees this we have found a black and white cat at the campground wandering around and we're wondering if anyone lost it. I am working on coaxing him or her to me so I could try to figure out if there is an owner. Today is Wednesday June 4th. If you think this is your cat you can reach me at Kristina Marie Perry on Facebook
Jun 04, 2025 · Kristina Mays (StonerGoddess83)Beautiful views, clean public bathroom, fishing spots next to campsite. The only bad thing is no cell service at all, and they haven't been maintaining the fire pits / grill areas on each site. They are all fill and need cleaning out. Mostly primitive campsites. Each are 16$ a night for a single and 30$ for a double. Rv campsites are available as well. If you want a beautiful place to connect with nature this place is one i would recommend. And only 30 minutes from roanoke city. Located 11 miles off the Arcadia exit!
Mar 28, 2023 · The local YokleFirst come. No reservations. 16 great camping sites. Gas station with some provisions not far. Some sites back up to a mountain stream. Clean. No electricity, no shower house. Just a couple out houses. Be prepared to pack up your stuff at night so as not to attract bears. We didn't see any bears, but maybe because guests were following the park rules.

Jan 25, 2023 · Allen AustinVery beautiful place. So peaceful and relaxing. The only thing is it's not being maintained like it should be but I still love going there.
