We have now camped out here twice! Having the ability to camp and ride the dirt bikes is the best!! Love it! We even decided to have a Thanksgiving camp out for the first time! Total success! It's got 6 camp sites, first come, so if you're planning to camp, the earlier, the better, so that you are able to claim a spot. You can not reserve a site online or anywhere else. The sites are also used for day use, usually for riders. There is also a beginners track right behind the campground. You can get the info online about costs. There is a board with envelopes for payment at the front of the parking lot. There is one covered building portapotty. There are no large dumpsters, so plan to pack your own trash out. People should know it's definitely not for the high maintenance people, as there are no electric hookups, nor is there water. If you don't have a generator or lanterns, it's probably not for you! There are picnic tables, a BBQ, and a firepit at each site. There is also no phone service. However, we were able to get some near the bathroom, so if you're down for riding dirtbikes and tuffin it out, you'll be fine and have a blast! - Jenny Burden

Navajo Flat Campground Introduce

For Californians who live for the thrill of the open trail and the rugged beauty of the wilderness, Navajo Flat Campground in Santa Margarita offers an unparalleled experience. This unique campground, nestled within the Los Padres National Forest and part of the popular Pozo OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) area, is specifically tailored for dirt bike enthusiasts and adventurous campers who appreciate a more primitive, off-grid setting. It's a place where the roar of engines blends with the quiet of nature, providing an exhilarating escape for those ready to "tough it out" and embrace a truly active outdoor lifestyle.

Navajo Flat Campground is celebrated by its loyal visitors for its direct access to extensive riding trails, making it the "best" for combining camping with dirt biking. It’s not a destination for the "high maintenance people," but rather for those who are prepared for a self-sufficient adventure, bringing their own water, power, and embracing the lack of phone service. Imagine spending your days tearing up the trails, then returning to a cozy campsite with a BBQ and fire pit, sharing stories under the vast Central Coast sky. As a California local, you understand the preciousness of finding dedicated spaces for your passions, and Navajo Flat Campground is perfectly positioned to become your go-to hub for thrilling off-road recreation and authentic wilderness camping in your home state.

Navajo Flat Campground is located at 11156 Red Hill Rd, Santa Margarita, CA 93453, USA. This address places it within the Los Padres National Forest, specifically in the Pozo OHV area, which is well-known to off-road enthusiasts in California. The campground sits in a relatively remote but accessible part of the forest, providing direct access to a network of trails.

Accessing Navajo Flat Campground typically involves driving on unpaved forest roads. From the town of Santa Margarita, you would take Pozo Road east and then turn onto Red Hill Road. While these roads are generally passable, they can be unpaved and may become rough or dusty, especially during dry periods. Having a vehicle with decent ground clearance is advisable. The campground is designed to accommodate various vehicles, including those towing dirt bikes or smaller trailers. Its location within the Pozo OHV area means it’s specifically suited for campers bringing their off-highway vehicles.

For California residents, this campground offers a unique and highly specialized outdoor experience. Its primary draw for locals is its direct integration with the OHV trails, minimizing travel time between camp and ride. While it requires a level of preparedness due to its rustic nature, its accessibility for vehicles geared towards outdoor adventure makes it a convenient and sought-after destination for the off-road community. The sense of camaraderie among riders and campers further enhances its appeal, creating a welcoming environment for like-minded individuals seeking thrill and outdoor immersion in their home state.

Navajo Flat Campground provides basic yet functional services, catering to a self-sufficient camping style that aligns with its off-grid, off-road focus:

  • Campsites: Offers 6 first-come, first-served campsites. This limited number means "the earlier, the better" to claim a spot, as reservations are not available online or elsewhere. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a BBQ, and a fire pit, making it easy to set up a comfortable camp.
  • Vault Toilet: There is one covered building with a vault toilet (outhouse) available. While a basic amenity, some visitors recommend bringing personal portable toilet solutions for added comfort.
  • No Water: It is crucial to note that there is NO water available at the campground. Campers must bring their own sufficient supply of water for drinking, cooking, washing, and, importantly, enough extra water to fully extinguish campfires.
  • No Electric Hookups: There are no electric hookups at the campsites. Campers are advised to bring their own power sources like generators or lanterns, making it "definitely not for the high maintenance people."
  • No Large Dumpsters: Visitors are expected to "pack your own trash out," as there are no large dumpsters on-site, emphasizing responsible wilderness ethics.
  • Day Use: The campsites are also used for day use, usually by riders, indicating a dynamic environment shared by overnight and day-use visitors.
  • Payment Board: A board with envelopes for payment is located at the front of the parking lot for self-registration and fee collection. Information about costs can be found online or at the board.
  • Limited Cell Service: Generally, there is "no phone service" at the campground, providing a true off-grid experience. However, some visitors reported being able to get "some near the bathroom," offering a potential spot for brief connectivity if needed.

The features and highlights of Navajo Flat Campground are primarily geared towards off-road enthusiasts and those seeking a rugged, immersive outdoor experience:

  • Dirt Bike Riding Access: The absolute highlight, offering direct access to an extensive network of trails within the Pozo OHV area. This is a primary reason why visitors "love it" and "can't wait to go again."
  • Beginner Track: A specific "beginners track right behind the campground" makes it ideal for new riders or for practicing skills in a controlled environment.
  • Thanksgiving Camping: The ability to host events like a "Thanksgiving camp out" highlights its suitability for group gatherings and extended stays for off-road focused holidays.
  • Off-Grid Experience: The lack of hookups, water, and cell service provides a genuine opportunity to disconnect from modern conveniences and fully immerse oneself in nature.
  • Scenic Views: While rugged, the surrounding Los Padres National Forest offers natural beauty and a distinct Central Coast landscape.
  • Spacious Sites: Although limited in number, the 6 campsites are generally spacious, allowing for comfortable setup of tents and vehicles.
  • Community Atmosphere: The shared passion for off-road riding often fosters a friendly and communal atmosphere among campers.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The natural environment provides opportunities to observe local wildlife, enhancing the wilderness experience for observant campers.
  • Peaceful (when not riding): Despite the off-road activity, the nights can be surprisingly peaceful, offering quiet contemplation under the stars.
