Mt. Rose Campground is renowned for its stunning location at an elevation of approximately 8,904 to 9,300 feet, providing spectacular panoramic views, especially of Lake Tahoe. It’s part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, offering a genuine forest camping experience. The campground is beautifully laid out, catering to various types of campers, including those with tents, small RVs, and even larger RVs, though some sites can be a bit tight for very large rigs. Visitors consistently praise the cleanliness of the campground and its facilities, along with the kindness and helpfulness of the hosts. While it can be quite popular and difficult to secure a spot on weekends, planning a mid-week visit often yields availability, and the effort to get in is undoubtedly worth it. The campground embraces the natural setting, providing essential amenities without the typical "resort" feel, allowing for a more authentic outdoor adventure.
Mt. Rose Campground is conveniently located on Mt Rose Hwy, New Washoe City, NV 89704, USA. This strategic position places it perfectly between two of Nevada’s most popular destinations: Reno and Lake Tahoe. For residents of Reno, it's a relatively short and scenic drive up the Mt. Rose Highway, making it an ideal spot for a quick weekend getaway or even a day trip. From Lake Tahoe, particularly the North Shore (like Incline Village), it’s also easily accessible. The drive itself is part of the experience, offering stunning vistas as you ascend into the mountains. This accessibility makes Mt. Rose Campground a fantastic option for Nevadans who want to immerse themselves in the high Sierra wilderness without embarking on an extensive journey. While the campground feels wonderfully remote, essential services in both Reno and Lake Tahoe are within a reasonable driving distance, allowing you to stock up on groceries and fuel before heading to the summit.

This campground is absolutely incredible. We loved staying here. It is very well kept. The hosts are very kind. There is firewood available for sale. There is a loop trail close by and the views are absolutely AMAZING. There are information boards around the trail. It was very educational for us and our son. The campground is dog friendly. We can't wait to come back!
Jun 20, 2025 · Kayla KNicest campground I've ever stayed in. Incredibly beautiful, very well maintained, good layout for tent, small RV and large RV camping. No hook ups, just water and vault toilets. Extremely difficult to get into around weekends, but usually has spaces available midweek. Worth the effort to get into.
Aug 20, 2024 · Doug RockeyEnjoyable, scenic, & clean campground. Easy for tent campers to set up and be comfortable quickly with tent pads, tables, stove table, bbq, and fire pit. Would highly recommend.
Aug 11, 2024 · Kayla JarrardI camped at Mt Rose Campgrounds for the first time late August 2022. The campgrounds are spacious and very well maintained, and they are located in a beautiful area. When I arrived I was greeted by the most friendly and helpful campground host I've ever met. Andrew drove me around the grounds so that I could see what was available. I stayed several times over the course of fall 2022 and was glad to have Andrew and Ashley, who both exemplify the meaning of "host"! I hope they are doing well and that I see them again in the Fall of 2023! - James
Mar 17, 2023 · J. A. SmithIf you are backpacking thru you may want to save your money. They charge the same if you are car camping. Unless you want a for sure water source and a decent place to put your tent. The pit toilet for the tent campers were clean. Camp ground area was clean and quiet. Talked to the hosts briefly and seemed helpful and friendly. The area seems well suited for car camping and trailers. May go back if doing either, but probably stop at a free site before reaching the camp ground.
