Guests often highlight its quiet atmosphere, the straightforward approach to camping, and the welcoming demeanor of the owner. Whether you're looking for a quick overnight stop or a longer stay to immerse yourself in the natural surroundings, Mountain Lake Campground provides a no-frills setting where you can truly unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors. It’s an ideal spot for those who appreciate a more primitive camping experience with essential conveniences.
Mountain Lake Campground is located at 127 Mountain Lake Ln, Paris, VA 20130, USA. This address places it strategically near the scenic Shenandoah Valley, making it a convenient base for exploring one of Virginia's most beloved natural treasures. Its proximity to Sky Meadows State Park, as noted by one camper, indicates its position within an area rich in hiking and outdoor opportunities. The campground’s setting is rural, offering a genuine sense of escape from urban noise and light pollution.
Accessibility is generally straightforward, though as with many rural campgrounds, the roads leading to it might be less developed than those to larger commercial parks. For those traveling by RV, the roads within the campground are navigable, and sites are often separate enough to offer privacy. While it provides a feeling of seclusion, its location near major routes means it’s not entirely cut off. This balance allows visitors to easily venture out for supplies or to explore nearby attractions, including the beautiful landscapes of Shenandoah National Park and the Appalachian Trail, which are within a reasonable driving distance. The natural surroundings of Paris, VA, contribute to the serene ambiance, making the journey to the campground part of the overall relaxing experience.
Mountain Lake Campground focuses on providing essential services to ensure a comfortable stay, particularly for those with RVs. While it maintains a more rustic feel, it offers key conveniences that make camping accessible and enjoyable:
- RV Sites: The campground features RV sites that include water and electric hookups. This is a significant convenience, especially for campers planning longer stays or those who rely on these utilities.
- Tent Sites: In addition to RV sites, the campground also offers tent sites for those who prefer a more traditional ground-level camping experience.
- Water and Electric Hookups: As confirmed by reviews, water and electric are included with the site fee, providing necessary utilities for campers.
- Affordable Rates: Campers have noted the economical pricing, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. For example, some have reported paying as low as $20 for a site, which is highly competitive.
- Pet-Friendly: Mountain Lake Campground welcomes pets, understanding that many campers travel with their furry companions. Specific rules, such as leash requirements, likely apply.
It is important to manage expectations regarding additional amenities often found at larger campgrounds. Based on feedback, services such as advanced internet/Wi-Fi and modern bathhouse facilities may be limited or vary in quality. The emphasis is on the basics, allowing campers to focus on the natural environment.
Mountain Lake Campground offers several features and highlights that appeal to campers seeking a particular type of outdoor experience:
- Very Quiet Atmosphere: A consistently praised highlight is the campground's serene and tranquil environment. This makes it an ideal choice for those looking to escape noise and enjoy peaceful evenings under the stars.
- Minimal Rules/Regulations: Campers appreciate the relaxed atmosphere, noting "hardly any rules/regulations." This allows for a more laid-back and less restrictive camping experience.
- Economical Pricing: The cost-effectiveness of the sites, with water and electric included for a low fee, is a significant draw, especially for long-term campers or those on a budget.
- Welcoming Owner: The owner is described as "nice and welcoming," contributing to a positive and friendly atmosphere for guests.
- Privacy for Campers: With possibly only a few campsites (some reviews suggest around 3) that are "pretty separate from each other," the campground offers a good degree of privacy, allowing campers to feel more secluded.
- Proximity to Outdoor Recreation: Its location near the Shenandoah Valley means easy access to hiking, nature observation, and exploring the beautiful landscapes of Shenandoah National Park and the Appalachian Trail.
- Year-Round Operation: The campground is open year-round, according to some sources, offering flexibility for campers who wish to visit during different seasons.
While some older reviews mention potential drawbacks such as an unappealing office or full dumpsters, newer reviews suggest improvements or highlight the positive aspects for a specific type of camper. The "decaying campsites" mentioned in an older review for long-term campers might indicate an older section of the park or a perception that some long-term sites are less maintained than others. However, the positive recent feedback indicates that for transient or short-term visitors, the experience can be "really nice."
Based on the available information, Mountain Lake Campground does not appear to publicly advertise traditional "promotions or special offers" like discounts for specific dates or holiday packages. Its appeal lies more in its consistently economical daily rates.
The core "promotion" offered by Mountain Lake Campground is its affordability, with reported daily rates being very competitive (e.g., $20 for a site with water and electric). This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers or those planning extended stays who want to maximize their time in the area without breaking the bank.
Given the nature of the campground, which seems to favor long-term or seasonal residents in some areas, it is possible that they offer special rates for extended stays (weekly or monthly) that are not always explicitly advertised. Prospective campers, especially those interested in longer visits, are highly encouraged to contact the campground directly to inquire about any specific rates for extended periods. This direct communication will also allow them to get the most accurate and up-to-date pricing information for their specific needs and preferred type of site.

Mountain Lake Campground Reviews
I declined to stay at Sky Meadows State Park Campgrounds due to the mile hike back to the campsite. I found Mountain Lake Campground just up the road.+ very quiet+ hardly any rules/regulations+ economical. Paid 20$ for the site+ water and electric included+ owner seemed nice and welcoming- difficult check in. The office was unappealing and was not manned until 5pm. No one answered the phone.- below average bath house for a campsite- dumpster was full-website needs updated- lots of long term campers with decaying campsites
Sep 28, 2022 · Rob MoretzWe ended up risking it on this place when everything else was full on a busy weekend in Shenandoah. We were worried because of some of the bad reviews, but it ended up being really nice! We had the place to ourselves which was great, but at most there’s only 3 camp sites here that are all pretty separate from each other. You have to drive to the bath house, so kind of primitive in that sense, but the bath house was well maintained.
Oct 18, 2020 · Haley KramerThe campground was clean and peaceful. The bathhouse clean and freshly painted. The location was ideal...close to everything but far enough away from the main roads. This is definitely a "dont judge a book by its cover" kinda campground. If you keep an open mind you will have a great time. We stayed for two nights in the "primitive camping" area and had a great time.
Jun 29, 2020 · JENNIFER ROBINSCould be a nice little camp ground 🤔 but the key word is Could. I didn't use them nasty showers 😕 I didn't want to catch anything 😕. They gave up on that place an just don't care
Sep 12, 2024 · Robert StimmelAt first glance we were unsure, but there was nothing else available over the holiday weekend. It’s $15 per person. Our campsite was next to the pond and was very spacious and secluded. We ended up having a great time. The bathhouse isn’t bad and was a nice amenity. We will definitely be going back here again!
