What sets this campground apart is its exceptionally high elevation. This high-altitude location contributes to the unique climate and ecological features found here, including cooler temperatures even in summer and often stunning clear skies.
Accessibility to Mosquito Flat Walk-in Campground is relatively straightforward via vehicle to the trailhead, but the "walk-in" designation is crucial. This means that while you can drive to the general area, the campsites themselves require a short walk from the parking area. This design helps to preserve the natural tranquility of the camping sites by limiting vehicle traffic directly within the camping loops. It's a small trade-off that significantly enhances the peace and quiet of your stay.
The campground's primary draw for many visitors is its immediate proximity to the Mosquito Flat Trailhead. This trailhead serves as the starting point for the renowned Little Lakes Valley hike, a highly recommended scenic trail that offers access to seven beautiful alpine lakes. Due to its popularity, especially for accessing this spectacular hiking area, securing a parking spot at the Mosquito Flat Trailhead, particularly during peak season, often requires arriving early in the morning. The drive up to the campground itself is an experience, offering increasingly impressive views as you ascend into the high country.
- Walk-in Campsites: As the name suggests, the campground primarily offers walk-in campsites. This means you will need to carry your gear a short distance from the parking area to your designated campsite. - High Altitude Environment: Mosquito Flat Walk-in Campground is situated at a very high altitude, making it one of the highest accessible campgrounds in the Eastern Sierra. This provides a unique alpine experience with cooler temperatures, less oxygen (which some visitors may need to acclimatize to), and often breathtaking mountain air.
- Gateway to Little Lakes Valley: A significant highlight is its direct access to the Mosquito Flat Trailhead, which is the starting point for the Little Lakes Valley hike. This hike is renowned for its incredible scenic beauty, leading past seven picturesque alpine lakes and offering stunning photographic opportunities. Aug 28, 2021 · Neal Bensonbathroom needs cleaning, but that is an issue with the people. minimal parking so get as many people in order e car as you can. the aspens were beautiful, but the storm awhile back made them change colors at different rates. Just hiking even a few yards is gorgeous.
Oct 13, 2024 · Phillip CashRock Creek (as long as you want it to be, up to about 10 miles)This hike is wonderful because it is beautiful and can truly be as long as you want it to be. Start at the Mosquito Flat trailhead and make your way slowly up. This trail is never steep, but your starting elevation is about 10,000 feet, so you’ll be surprised by your heavy breathing. Follow the wildflower dusted trail along the creek to various lakes and enjoy the scenery. Keep walking the mostly flat trail as long as you want, and on your return, once you’ve made it back to the car, drive to the nearby resort for pie.
