Last minute I couldn’t find a place to reserve for memorial weekend, everything was booked ! I found this place on google and couldn’t get in contact with the office or any place to reserve. I was able to find out that they had first come first serve tent camping spots so by faith we made our way there. The gps directions were accurate very easy place to find. Upon arrival was a nice man on a kart he said hello. Made my way to office and came to find out that they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. (The good thing was they had spots available ) went to get cash 9 miles away to Foresthill. The staff was nice not sure why the mean reviews but anyway, you will see lots of geese poop everywhere, i wished O had taken a rake or something to clean my spot. I also saw lots of dogs, so not sure why the reviews say they are not pet friendly. The lake was glorious! Not many people in it probably was to cold the sites are really close to one another so you will hear and see everything your neighbor has or does, which I think is normal at a campsite. We were able to walk a trail all around the lake it’s a nice hike probably took like an hr (wasn’t checking the time much) the restrooms were stinky, but again you are not at home , so don’t expect clean smelling restrooms. I heard loud snoring at night across from our tents but overall I give this place 5 stars ! Will definitely be going back LORD WILLING. - Marlen Ramos

It’s a place where the simplicity of outdoor living is embraced, with the shimmering lake as its magnificent focal point.

Morning Star Lake Campground caters to those who appreciate a more rustic approach to camping while still having access to essential amenities. This article will provide a detailed overview of this compelling destination, covering its location and accessibility, the services it offers, its key features and highlights, and ultimately, why it stands out as a suitable and appealing choice for local Californians looking for a genuine connection with the outdoors.

Morning Star Lake Campground is located at 3850 Big Reservoir Road, Foresthill, CA 95631, USA. More broadly, it is nestled within the scenic Foresthill area, a popular outdoor recreation destination in the Sierra Nevada foothills. For many Californians, particularly those in the Sacramento metropolitan area and other parts of Northern California, the drive to Foresthill is manageable, offering a pleasant transition from urban or suburban environments to the tranquility of the forest.

While the physical address points directly to the site, visitors should note that getting there involves navigating roads that lead deeper into the forested landscape. GPS directions are generally accurate and can guide you effectively. It is approximately a 9-mile drive from the town of Foresthill, which is important to remember as Foresthill is the nearest location for services like obtaining cash, a crucial detail for payment at the campground. This slight distance from town contributes to the campground’s secluded feel, allowing for a more immersive natural experience.

The accessibility is a key factor for local users who desire a quick escape without an overly long journey. Once you arrive, the straightforward layout of the campground makes it easy to find your way. Its location adjacent to OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) trails provides an added recreational dimension for those interested, although strict rules within the campground ensure a quieter environment for campers not participating in OHV activities. This blend of accessibility and a truly natural setting makes Morning Star Lake Campground an attractive option for Californians seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.

Morning Star Lake Campground provides a set of essential services aimed at facilitating a comfortable and self-sufficient camping trip. While it embraces a more rustic charm, it offers key amenities that enhance the experience:

  • First-Come, First-Serve Campsites: A significant portion of the campground operates on a first-come, first-serve basis for tent camping spots, making it an excellent option for last-minute trips when other reserved campgrounds are fully booked. Some sites are also reservable.
  • Cash-Only Payments: A crucial detail for visitors is that the campground primarily "ONLY ACCEPTS CASH" for payments, requiring preparation before arrival (the nearest ATM is 9 miles away in Foresthill).
  • Individual Campsite Amenities: Each campsite is equipped with basic necessities, including a fire pit for campfires, a grill for cooking, and a picnic table for dining and gathering.
  • Shared Water Spigots: Water spigots are conveniently "spaced out to be shared by a few sites," providing accessible drinking water for campers.
  • Latrine-Style Toilets: The campground features "latrine-style toilets." While some visitors note they can be "stinky," they are a standard amenity for a rustic camping environment.
  • Group Campsites: There are "two group campsites at the back" for larger gatherings, offering a dedicated space for bigger parties.
  • Day Use Passes: The campground sells "day use passes for people who want to stop by and enjoy the lake but not stay overnight to camp," providing flexibility for visitors.
  • Fishing Access (Extra Fee): Fishing is permitted on the lake, but it requires an "extra fee," indicating a separate license or permit beyond the camping fee.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: Despite some older reviews, the campground is indeed "pet friendly." Reviewers confirm seeing "lots of dogs," and the official rules state "ALL pets must be kept on a leash and cleaned up after."
  • Proximity to OHV Trails: The campground is "near OHV trails," providing access for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. However, vehicles "cannot be ridden within the campground" and must be pushed or towed out, maintaining peace within the camping area.
  • Dump Station (Nearby): While the on-site dump station was observed to be blocked off by a reviewer, there is a known dump station "near Sugar Pine reservoir" for RV users.

Morning Star Lake Campground boasts several unique features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a preferred destination for outdoor enthusiasts. These elements create a memorable and enjoyable experience:

  • Glorious Lake Access: The "lake was glorious!" according to a reviewer, providing ample opportunities for water activities such as "boats, kayaks, floaties, and paddle boards on the hot days." It’s ideal for swimming and enjoying the water.
  • Peaceful Lake Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, the lake is described as "not many people in it," suggesting a less crowded experience, possibly due to cooler water temperatures, allowing for a more serene aquatic enjoyment.
  • Accessible and Clear Directions: Visitors found the "gps directions were accurate very easy place to find," which is a significant advantage, especially for those venturing to a new outdoor location.
  • Friendly Staff: Contrary to some "mean reviews," visitors found the staff to be "nice" and welcoming, indicating a positive human element to the campground experience.
  • Extensive Lake Trail: There is a "trail all around the lake" that offers a "nice hike," providing opportunities for walking and enjoying the scenic views, estimated to take about an hour.
  • Close Campsite Proximity (Normal for Campgrounds): While sites are "really close to one another so you will hear and see everything your neighbor has or does," this is acknowledged as "normal at a campsite," fostering a communal camping vibe.
  • OHV Trail Access with Campground Quiet Zone: The proximity to OHV trails is a major draw for specific users, but the strict rule against riding ATVs/motorcycles within the campground ensures that the main camping area remains "quieter."
  • Minimal Amenities for a Back-to-Basics Feel: The "minimal amenities" contribute to a true outdoor experience, encouraging campers to embrace simplicity and self-reliance.
  • Lakefront and Pull-Through Sites: The availability of "lakefront and pull-through sites" offers desirable options for different camping preferences, though these may cost a little more.
  • Opportunity for Digital Detox: While not explicitly stated, the mention of limited amenities and a focus on nature implies a chance to disconnect from digital devices, providing a true escape.
