went here for a young men's campout and canoed. for most of the way there it was fine until 2/3 of the way thru lewis river a storm hit with hail, rain, and lightning😭 and then the wind picked up as we were canoeing to the camp site our group got split up into two different groups. I didn't have any of my stuff and I was fortunate enough to have ZERO FOOD and sleep in a 4 man tent with 8 people and two including me with hypothermia on our feet. minus that tho it was a great four day trip😁 - Blake P

Moose Creek Outlet Introduce

Welcome to the heart of the great outdoors, right here in Wyoming. If you’re a local resident looking to escape the everyday and immerse yourself in the natural beauty our state is famous for, look no further than Moose Creek Outlet. This isn't your typical drive-up campground; it's a destination for the true adventurer, offering a memorable experience for those willing to paddle to their piece of paradise. Situated within the world-renowned Yellowstone National Park, Moose Creek Outlet provides a unique and authentic camping experience, combining stunning landscapes with the tranquility of the backcountry.

Moose Creek Outlet is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's a gateway to some of Wyoming's most pristine wilderness. Whether you're planning a family trip or a challenging expedition with friends, this campground offers a unique blend of ruggedness and serene beauty. It's a place where you can disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature, where the sounds of the forest replace the noise of the city, and where the stars at night put on a show you won’t soon forget.

Located within the vast expanse of Yellowstone National Park, Moose Creek Outlet is specifically nestled along the Lewis River Channel. The address is Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, USA. Its remote location is a key part of its charm and a significant detail for anyone planning a visit. Accessibility to the campground is primarily by water, making it a destination for those who enjoy canoeing or kayaking. This unique approach ensures that the area remains less crowded and more preserved, offering a genuine backcountry feel. You'll need to paddle a significant portion of the Lewis River to reach the site. While this might sound daunting, it’s an integral part of the adventure. It's an opportunity to truly earn your campsite, paddling through scenic waters and experiencing the park from a different perspective.

The on-site parking available is located at the put-in point for your watercraft, not directly at the campground itself. This means you can easily get your gear from your vehicle to your boat and begin your journey down the river. The journey itself, while potentially challenging, is also incredibly rewarding. It’s a chance to see parts of Yellowstone that many visitors never get to experience, and it sets the stage for an unforgettable camping trip.

When it comes to the services offered at Moose Creek Outlet, the focus is on a minimalist, Leave No Trace style of camping. This is a primitive campsite, which means you should come prepared with everything you need for your stay.

  • On-site parking is available at the launch point for watercraft. This allows for convenient access to begin your paddle trip to the campground.
  • The campground is well-suited for a variety of group sizes, with plenty of space available for multiple tents and group activities.
  • This is a 'pack it in, pack it out' location. There are no modern amenities like running water, restrooms, or trash disposal. Campers are responsible for bringing their own supplies and removing all waste.
  • The campsite provides a true backcountry experience, where campers can fully immerse themselves in nature without the distractions of modern conveniences.

This type of primitive camping is what makes Moose Creek Outlet so special. It encourages self-reliance and a deeper connection with the natural environment. You’ll be able to enjoy the quiet solitude and raw beauty of Yellowstone without the crowds often found at more accessible campgrounds. It's the perfect spot for those who want to rough it and truly get away from it all.

Moose Creek Outlet has several features that make it stand out as a top choice for campers in Wyoming.

  • Excellent for canoeing and kayaking due to its location at the end of a scenic river channel. The paddle to the campground is a highlight in itself.
  • Plentiful beach front camping options. The site offers many spots right along the water, perfect for setting up camp with a view of the Lewis River.
  • High potential for wildlife watching. The nearby Moose Creek, from which the campground gets its name, provides opportunities to spot local wildlife, including moose, birds, and other animals.
  • Suitable for groups and families. The large, open spaces make it a great option for group campouts, providing ample room for everyone to spread out. It is also good for kids who are ready for a more rugged camping experience, teaching them about nature and resilience.
  • A genuine backcountry experience that feels isolated and peaceful, a stark contrast to the busy frontcountry areas of the park.

The combination of these features creates a truly unique and memorable camping experience. It’s the kind of place where you can sit by the fire and listen to the sounds of the forest, or wake up to the sight of the sun rising over the water. It’s a place that will challenge you and reward you, all at the same time.

For those planning a trip, the contact information for Moose Creek Outlet is as follows. Please note that as a primitive backcountry site, direct contact is generally not for reservations but for general park information.

Phone: (307) 344-7381 (Yellowstone National Park Headquarters number for general inquiries)

While there is no direct line for the campground itself, this number can be used to get information about park regulations, conditions, and backcountry permits which are required for this type of camping. It’s always a good idea to check with park authorities before your trip to ensure you have all the necessary permits and up-to-date information on trail and water conditions.

Why is Moose Creek Outlet worth choosing for your next outdoor adventure? The answer lies in the unique experience it offers. As one camper noted, despite a challenging journey with unexpected weather, the trip was still considered a "great four day trip." This speaks to the rewarding nature of the destination itself. Another visitor highlighted the "easy paddle over to camp" once they reached the Lewis River Channel and praised the "plenty of beach front camping" and the "opportunities for wildlife watching." These reviews underscore the blend of challenge and reward that defines the Moose Creek Outlet experience.

This is a place for those who seek more than just a place to park an RV. It’s for those who want to paddle their way into a true wilderness escape, where the journey is as much a part of the destination as the campsite itself. The peaceful setting, the opportunity to see wildlife, and the chance to camp right on the water make it a standout choice. It’s a perfect option for families with older children who are ready for a more authentic outdoor challenge, or for groups of friends looking for an unforgettable backcountry trip. It's the kind of place that creates stories you'll be telling for years to come—stories of adventure, resilience, and the unparalleled beauty of Wyoming's wilderness.
