Moonshine Mine is located at 17867, Richland, OR 97870, USA. This address places it within the rugged and scenic region of Eastern Oregon, an area known for its dramatic landscapes and expansive wilderness. While the address indicates its general vicinity, it’s important for prospective campers to understand that accessing Moonshine Mine requires a degree of preparation and the right kind of vehicle.
The journey to Moonshine Mine is part of the adventure. Visitors have reported that the road from Richland, while navigable, can be rocky and features several deep inclines. While one visitor successfully navigated it in a high-horsepower car, a 4x4 truck or a vehicle with higher ground clearance is generally recommended for a more comfortable and secure passage. This is not a paved highway entrance to a developed campground; it’s a rugged track that leads to a truly remote experience. The road conditions underscore the importance of checking weather forecasts and preparing your vehicle adequately before attempting the drive.
The remoteness of Moonshine Mine is a significant part of its appeal, offering a genuine escape from crowded areas. This means you’ll be far from immediate services, so planning ahead for fuel, supplies, and emergency preparedness is crucial. Despite the challenging access, the consensus among those who have made the journey is that "it was worth the short bumpy ride." The reward for navigating the terrain is access to a pristine natural environment, including proximity to the majestic Snake River, which is a major draw for many visitors.
Understanding the location and accessibility of Moonshine Mine is key to a successful trip. It’s not a spontaneous stop but rather a planned expedition for those who are prepared for an authentic off-grid camping experience in the heart of Oregon's wilderness. The journey itself becomes an integral part of the adventure, leading you to a place of unparalleled beauty and tranquility.
As a remote and rugged campground, Moonshine Mine offers a different kind of "service" compared to more developed recreational areas. The primary service it provides is access to an untouched natural environment for dispersed camping. This means visitors should arrive prepared to be self-sufficient, as traditional campground amenities are not available. Here’s what you can expect in terms of the services and experience offered:
- Remote Camping Spots: Moonshine Mine provides a multitude of "great camp spots" as described by visitors, allowing for a secluded and private camping experience. These spots are not pre-assigned or designated with traditional campsites, giving you the freedom to find a location that suits your preferences, whether it’s for scenic views or ease of access to the river.
- Access to Natural Features: The campground offers direct access to the stunning Snake River, a major highlight for fishing, exploring, or simply enjoying the serene waterside environment. The remote location also provides excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting, including the chance to see bighorns, as one visitor noted.
- Off-Grid Experience: Moonshine Mine facilitates a true off-grid experience, meaning there are no facilities such as restrooms, potable water, or designated fire rings. Campers are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles, carrying in and carrying out all supplies and waste. This ensures the pristine nature of the area is preserved for future visitors.
- Vehicle Accessibility (with caveats): While challenging, the "manageable with a higher hp car or sedan" road, and more ideally with a "4x4 truck," provides vehicle access deep into a remote area, allowing campers to bring their gear closer to their chosen spot. This is a crucial service for those looking to explore more rugged terrains.
- Uninterrupted Nature: The ultimate service provided by Moonshine Mine is the gift of an uninterrupted natural setting. It’s a place where you can truly escape the noise and artificiality of urban life, offering pure air, quiet solitude, and expansive views. This is the core "service" that draws visitors seeking genuine wilderness.
Moonshine Mine stands out for several distinctive features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for a specific type of outdoor enthusiast. These are the elements that create its unique appeal:
- Stunning Natural Beauty: The paramount feature of Moonshine Mine is its breathtaking natural surroundings. Visitors consistently describe the area as "definitely beautiful," with picturesque landscapes that include dramatic rock formations, remote vistas, and the majestic Snake River. The rugged terrain offers a visually striking backdrop for any outdoor activity.
- Remote and Secluded Camping: For those who prioritize solitude, Moonshine Mine is a dream come true. Its remote location ensures a high degree of seclusion, allowing campers to find "good spot" that feel truly private and undisturbed. This is a significant highlight for individuals and groups looking to escape crowded campgrounds.
- Snake River Access: A major draw of Moonshine Mine is its proximity and access to the Snake River. This provides fantastic opportunities for fishing, riverside relaxation, or simply enjoying the sounds of flowing water. It's a natural amenity that enhances the overall camping experience.
- Off-Road Adventure: The challenging access road from Richland is a highlight for off-road enthusiasts. While it requires careful navigation and suitable vehicles (ideally 4x4s), the journey itself is part of the adventure. Successfully reaching the campground is a rewarding experience, showcasing the capabilities of your vehicle and your adventurous spirit.
- Wildlife Viewing Potential: The remote and untouched nature of the area makes it an excellent location for wildlife spotting. Visitors have come specifically "looking for bighorns," indicating the potential to observe a variety of local fauna in their natural habitat.
- Starry Nights: Due to its significant distance from urban light pollution, Moonshine Mine offers exceptionally clear night skies, making it an ideal location for stargazing. The absence of artificial light allows the Milky Way and countless stars to shine brightly, providing a truly awe-inspiring celestial display.

I freaking made it to moonshine mine in a freaking challenger! I took the road from Richland and it was a ride! Not a lot of potholes. But it's super rocky and has several deep inclines. I took that road better than all the pickups out there!Def will come out here again out with a 4x4 truck lol. It's manageable with a higher hp car or sedan. It was worth the short bumpy ride. Enjoyed snake river and remoteness to smoke a joint. I came out here looking for bighorns. No luck, but I found great camp spots to assist my spotting in the future.

Jun 06, 2020 · Alex RamellaWater level was way up so the boat launch was incredibly easy and accessible, maybe a different story when the water is low. Facilities were clean with a handful of camp spots. I would definitely go back.
Jun 07, 2023 · Justin ParkinsDry camping only! There is a lack of "developed" campsites, but there is potable bathrooms. There aren't many trees, so I the summer it gets hot very quickly. Beware of rattlesnakes here too. This is one of the only places to launch a boat when Idaho Power lowers Brownlee Reservoir's water level, but there isn't a dock, so bring some help.
Mar 10, 2020 · Tesmond HurdI use the campground for the boat launch. The road getting to it is washboard and dusty. The ramp is super nice and easy in and out. There is no docks to tie to if you are by yourself. There is rings in the ramp if you don't mind beaching your boat.
