Molas Lake Park & Campground

US-550, Silverton, CO 81433, USA

4.0
Seeing the reflection of the snow capped mountains on the lake was an impressive introduction to this campground. Our site was up on the hill so we didn't have a great view of the lake from there, and no hookups anywhere in the campground, but being able to park our motorhome and spend a night at that high elevation, seeing the beauty all around was truly amazing. The hosts said we might be able to see the Aurora Borealis at night (this was in early June), but unfortunately the sky was cloudy during our stay. Maybe next time! 😃 - Abram Miller

Molas Lake Park & Campground Introduce

For Coloradans, the journey through the majestic Rocky Mountains is often as rewarding as the destination itself. Along the world-renowned Million Dollar Highway, one of the state's most iconic scenic routes, lies a true high-altitude treasure: Molas Lake Park & Campground. This exceptional location offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the San Juan Mountains. It's more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's an experience defined by stunning vistas, crisp mountain air, and the serene tranquility of an alpine lake. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and engaging overview of Molas Lake Park & Campground, highlighting its unique appeal and why it stands out as an ideal destination for local outdoor enthusiasts across Colorado.

Molas Lake Park & Campground is situated at an impressive elevation, offering a perspective on the Colorado landscape that few other places can match. The initial impression for many visitors is unforgettable, with the "reflection of the snow capped mountains on the lake" providing a truly "impressive introduction." This natural grandeur is the defining feature of the campground, promising a visual feast around every corner. While some sites might be "up on the hill" and not offer a direct lake view, the overall panorama of the surrounding peaks and the pristine environment ensures that beauty is always within sight.

The experience at Molas Lake is one of raw, natural immersion. It's a place where you can "park our motorhome and spend a night at that high elevation, seeing the beauty all around was truly amazing." The lack of hookups across the campground reinforces this rustic charm, encouraging campers to embrace a more traditional, self-sufficient approach to outdoor living. While the promise of the "Aurora Borealis at night" might not always materialize due to weather, the clear, dark skies at this elevation certainly offer incredible stargazing opportunities, a highlight for many.

Customer reviews consistently emphasize the "Good view" from the campground, underscoring its primary appeal. The lake itself, while featuring "tiny fish," still offers fishing opportunities, adding another dimension to the outdoor experience. It's important to note the mention of "no hookups anywhere in the campground" and a cost of "$5 for a 4 minute shower," which indicates a more basic amenity structure compared to some highly developed parks. However, for Coloradans who value breathtaking scenery, high-altitude tranquility, and a slightly more rugged camping adventure over extensive modern conveniences, Molas Lake Park & Campground offers an unmatched and truly memorable experience. Its position directly on the Million Dollar Highway also makes it an excellent stop or basecamp for exploring the scenic wonders of southwestern Colorado.

Location and Accessibility

Molas Lake Park & Campground is uniquely situated on US-550, Silverton, CO 81433, USA. This places it directly on the world-famous Million Dollar Highway, one of Colorado's most iconic and breathtaking scenic byways, connecting Silverton to Durango. The campground is located at a very high elevation, typically around 10,910 feet (3,325 meters), offering truly alpine camping.

For Colorado locals, reaching Molas Lake is part of the iconic Million Dollar Highway experience itself. Whether approaching from the north (Ouray/Silverton) or the south (Durango), the drive is renowned for its spectacular mountain passes, sharp curves, and dramatic vistas. While the road is paved and generally well-maintained during the open season (typically late spring through fall), drivers should be prepared for mountain driving conditions, including steep grades and tight turns, especially for those in larger RVs.

Despite its high elevation and scenic isolation, the campground's direct frontage on US-550 makes it surprisingly accessible for a mountain camping experience. You don't need 4WD to reach it, and it's suitable for motorhomes and trailers, as noted by a reviewer who brought their motorhome. This accessibility, combined with the feeling of being truly immersed in the high country, makes Molas Lake a convenient yet adventurous choice for Coloradans. Its location also serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the charming historic town of Silverton, just a short drive away, and venturing further into the San Juan National Forest for hiking, fishing, and photography. The high altitude means it often opens later in the spring and closes earlier in the fall than lower-elevation campgrounds, so checking seasonal accessibility is crucial.
