Mohican Group Camp Introduce
For those of us in Ohio who appreciate the camaraderie of a shared outdoor adventure, few experiences rival the joy of group camping. When it comes to accommodating larger gatherings, whether it's a family reunion, a scout troop outing, or a friends' getaway, finding the right space is key. That's where the Mohican Group Camp, nestled in the heart of Ohio's beloved Mohican State Park, truly shines. This dedicated group camping area is a standout option for Ohioans looking to create memorable experiences in one of our state's most scenic regions.
Mohican State Park is already a cherished destination for its stunning landscapes, including the Clear Fork Gorge, the winding Mohican River, and extensive forested areas. The Mohican Group Camp offers a specific, tailored experience within this natural wonderland, focusing on the needs of larger parties. It provides a unique blend of primitive camping feel with essential amenities, making it perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature without being entirely disconnected from basic comforts. Local campers consistently praise its suitability for group tent camping, highlighting its spaciousness and the freedom it offers for collective activities.
What makes this group camp particularly appealing to Ohioans is its capacity to host significant numbers of people while maintaining a sense of natural beauty. It's a place where you can spread out, set up multiple tents, and enjoy shared meals around a communal fire pit. The reviews from fellow Ohioans underscore its popularity and the need to book early, which is a testament to its quality and demand. This camp is a testament to Ohio's commitment to providing diverse and high-quality outdoor recreational opportunities for all its residents.
Mohican Group Camp is strategically located at 3054 Co Hwy 939, Perrysville, OH 44864, USA, deep within the expansive and picturesque Mohican State Park. This positioning places it right in the heart of one of Ohio's most renowned natural and recreational areas. For Ohio residents, reaching this destination is relatively straightforward, offering a convenient escape into nature without an arduous journey.
Perrysville is a small, charming town that serves as a gateway to the Mohican region. The camp's specific address on County Highway 939 indicates its integration within the state park's network of roads. While it feels secluded, which is ideal for a group camping experience, it's generally accessible via well-maintained state and county roads. Drivers from major Ohio cities like Columbus, Cleveland, or Cincinnati will find the route manageable, often involving a scenic drive through rural landscapes before reaching the park entrance.
It's important to note that the group camp is located approximately six miles from the main Mohican State Park family campground. This separation contributes to its private atmosphere, ensuring that group activities can thrive without disturbing other campers. Despite this distance, group camp guests are permitted to use the facilities of the main campground, such as shower houses and the swimming pool, typically by purchasing a daily car pass. This balance of secluded group space and access to broader park amenities makes its location exceptionally convenient for organized gatherings. The popularity of the camp means it "fills up fast," so planning and booking well in advance are highly recommended for local users.
Mohican Group Camp, managed as part of Mohican State Park by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), provides essential services tailored for large group tent camping. While it offers a more primitive experience compared to a full-service family campground, it ensures fundamental needs are met for a comfortable group outing.
- Primitive Group Tent Sites: The camp offers four distinct, non-electric primitive group sites, designed specifically for tent camping. Each site provides ample, mostly flat space for setting up multiple tents.
- Picnic Tables: Every individual group site is equipped with picnic tables, facilitating shared meals and gatherings.
- Individual Fire Rings: Each of the four group sites has its own individual fire ring, allowing groups to enjoy private campfires.
- Communal Large Firepit: There is a central, large communal firepit within the group camp circle. While its primary use is for booking all four sites, it can serve as a focal point for larger gatherings when appropriate.
- Potable Water Spigot: A shared water spigot is centrally located within the group camp area, providing safe, drinkable water that is noted by campers as tasting "great," likely sourced from local city water.
- Pit Latrines (Porta-Potties): Three shared pit latrines (portable toilets) are available for all four group sites, providing basic restroom facilities.
- Dumpsters: Two dumpsters are conveniently located between sites 2 and 3 for waste disposal, encouraging campers to keep the area clean.
- Dog-Friendly Policy: The group camp is dog-friendly, allowing campers to bring their canine companions, a significant plus for many Ohio families and groups.
- Access to Main Campground Facilities: Group camp guests have the option to use the showerhouses and swimming pool at the main Mohican State Park campground by purchasing a daily car pass, offering a significant amenity upgrade if desired.
- Frequent Ranger Patrols: Rangers reportedly drive through frequently, ensuring safety and adherence to park rules, which contributes to a problem-free environment.
- Online Reservation System: Reservations for the group camp can be made up to six months in advance through the Ohio State Parks online reservation system (reserveohio.com) or by phone.
Mohican Group Camp boasts several features and highlights that make it an outstanding choice for group camping in Ohio, catering to the specific needs of larger parties and outdoor enthusiasts.
- Dedicated Group Camping Area: This is its most significant highlight. Unlike individual campsites, the Mohican Group Camp is specifically designed for larger gatherings (up to 25 guests per site), providing the space and a sense of exclusivity necessary for group dynamics.
- Spacious, Flat Tent Areas: Reviewers consistently note the "plenty of mostly flat space to set up tents" on each site. This is crucial for accommodating multiple tents comfortably and setting up group activities like cornhole or KanJam.
- Dog-Friendly: The welcoming policy towards dogs is a major plus for many Ohio groups who want to include their furry friends in their outdoor adventures.
- Privacy and Seclusion: Located six miles from the main campground, the group camp offers a quieter, more private setting, minimizing disturbances from other park visitors and enhancing the group experience.
- Potable Water Access: The availability of a shared water spigot with "great" tasting potable water is a vital convenience for primitive camping, ensuring access to drinking water without having to leave the immediate area.
- Individual and Communal Firepits: The presence of individual fire rings on each site for private group campfires, alongside a large central firepit (ideal if all four sites are booked together), provides flexibility for evening gatherings.
- Proximity to Mohican State Park Attractions: Despite its secluded feel, the camp offers relatively easy access to the extensive recreational opportunities of Mohican State Park, including hiking trails, mountain biking routes (the "short loop" trail passes nearby), and river activities (canoeing/kayaking through local liveries).
- Flexible Vehicle Limits: While reservation info might state a "2 car limit," actual camper experience suggests more flexibility, with sites often accommodating "6-8 cars or more," which is essential for group gatherings with multiple vehicles.
- Well-Patrolled: The frequent presence of rangers contributes to a safe and secure environment, ensuring rules are followed and issues are promptly addressed.
- Varied Site Characteristics: The camp's four sites offer different levels of shade and openness (e.g., Site 3 with "plenty of shade and sun," Site 4 "almost fully wooded," Site 2 "completely treeless"). This allows groups to choose a site that best fits their preference for sun, shade, or open space for games.
As Mohican Group Camp is part of the Ohio State Parks system, managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), specific "promotions" in the traditional commercial sense are less common. However, the ODNR does offer various discounts and programs that benefit Ohio residents and can reduce the overall cost of a group camping trip. These are primarily focused on accessibility and appreciation for certain community groups.
- Golden Buckeye Card Discount: Ohio residents aged 60 and over, holding a Golden Buckeye Card, are typically eligible for discounts on camping fees, often 50% Sunday through Thursday and 10% on Fridays and Saturdays. While group camp reservations are a single fee, it's worth checking if a Golden Buckeye Card holder making the reservation can apply this benefit.
- Active/Retired Military Discount: ODNR offers a 10% discount on overnight stays for active and retired military personnel. The person making the group reservation who qualifies should inquire about applying this.
- Disabled Veteran and Former Prisoner of War Free Camping Pass Program: Ohio resident veterans who are permanently and totally disabled or are former Prisoners of War may be eligible for a free camping pass. This could significantly reduce the cost for a qualifying individual leading a group.
- Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp Discount: Holders of the Ohio Wildlife Legacy stamp may receive a discount on lodge rooms or cabins, which might occasionally extend to other overnight facilities or packages.
- Youth Group Discounts: While not always a direct price reduction, many state parks, including Mohican, have programs or special considerations for official youth organizations (e.g., Scouts, church groups). It's advisable to inquire directly about any specific programs for organized youth groups.
It's crucial for groups to note that these discounts typically apply to the reservation holder and may require valid identification. The best way to inquire about any applicable savings or special group rates is to contact the Ohio State Parks reservation system directly when booking the Mohican Group Camp. Reservations fill up quickly, especially for group sites, so planning ahead is essential regardless of potential discounts.
For inquiries, reservations, and specific information regarding the Mohican Group Camp within Mohican State Park, the primary contact points are through the Ohio State Parks central reservation system, as it manages all state park campgrounds.

For us Ohioans, the Mohican Group Camp represents an unparalleled opportunity for large groups to connect with nature and each other in one of our state’s most beautiful regions. Its suitability for locals, particularly for those organizing events for multiple families, youth groups, or friends, is evident in several key aspects that cater directly to our community’s needs and preferences.
Firstly, the very design of the camp for "group tent camping" is a perfect fit. Ohioans love to gather, and this camp provides the ample, mostly flat space required for numerous tents and shared activities. The presence of individual fire rings alongside a potential communal fire pit (if all sites are booked) allows for both intimate group moments and larger, unifying gatherings, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie that is vital for any group outing.
Secondly, its location within Mohican State Park is a significant draw. We are fortunate to have such a rich natural playground in our state, and the group camp's deep integration within the park means direct access to an array of outdoor activities. From exhilarating hikes through the gorge and peaceful moments by the Clear Fork River to thrilling mountain biking trails and canoeing adventures, the park offers something for every member of the group. This proximity to diverse recreational opportunities ensures that everyone stays engaged and entertained throughout their stay.
Moreover, practical amenities like potable water, readily available pit latrines, and easily accessible dumpsters greatly enhance the primitive camping experience, making it manageable and comfortable for groups. The fact that it's dog-friendly is another huge advantage, allowing furry family members to be part of the adventure, which is a common desire among Ohio families.
The feedback from local users, emphasizing the "friendly staff," "frequent ranger patrols," and the ease of accommodating numerous vehicles (despite initial reservation info), speaks to a well-managed and accommodating environment. This level of support and understanding ensures that group leaders can focus on the fun rather than logistical headaches.
Finally, the popularity of the Mohican Group Camp, as evidenced by how quickly it "fills up," underscores its reputation as a premier group camping destination. This consistent demand from fellow Ohioans is a testament to its value and the memorable experiences it provides. For any large group in Ohio seeking a blend of natural immersion, recreational opportunities, and a well-supported camping environment, Mohican Group Camp is unequivocally the ideal choice to make those collective outdoor dreams a reality.

Mohican Group Camp Reviews
Great place for some group tent camping!Overall, I would absolutely recommend this place if you're able to book it early enough. It fills up fast. All sites have picnic tables and are dog friendly. The "2 car limit" on the reservation info is super not accurate. each site probably averaged like 6-8 cars or more. The rangers drive through frequently, and there were little to no problems. We didn't see any Raccoons, but we are pretty careful about cleaning up well. Plenty of mostly flat space to set up tents. We had site 2 reserved, but this review will be about all of them. The sites don't have clear separations of where each of them ends, but usually camping is pretty chill, however this could cause issues. The sites all share 3 poterpotties, a water spigot, 2 dumpsters, and a central communal large firepit. I think the firepit in the middle is for if you reserve all 4 group sites, but each site has individual fire rings on them as well. All four sites are located around the circle of the group site that has the large firepit in the middle. Site 1 is on the southeast corner of the circle. It is probably the smallest of the sites and only has about 4 trees on the site. This site is also adjacent to the 3 poterpotties (directly south) shared by the group camp. Next, site 2, is in the northeast corner of the site. This site is completely treeless in the camping area, so don't plan to hammock here. It was great for cornhole, KanJam, and bocce, but plan ahead. I would definitely recommend an awning for this site. Between site 2 and 3 is where the water and dumpsters are located. The water was potable and taste great. I would assume it is local city water. Site 3 in the northwest corner is about 2/3 wooded with a nice open flat area to set up tents in. If I were going again I would try and book this one. Plenty of shade and sun. The only downside is that this site, and site 4 are along the road. The road is not busy at all, but some headlights or car noise could disturb a peaceful night's sleep. Over at site 4 on the Southwest corner, the site is almost fully wooded. The trees are far enough apart that there is still plenty of room to set up tents though. As stated before it is along the road, but it is also next to the entrance to the group area. So if there are lots of people coming and going this could be an issue. There was a group already here so my photo's of this site are not super close up to respect their privacy.
Jul 19, 2021 · LeviLots of space, potable water and portable toilets. There was also a trash receptacle near by. I definitely enjoyed my weekend hanging out here with a group of friends.
Sep 03, 2023 · Alex WagnerWent here with a large group of about 50 people for a church camping trip and it was awesome. Lots of great hikes close by and a huge fire pit in the center to have big group fires by.
Oct 11, 2018 · Thomas KnapkeGreat area for a group camp. And if you like hinting, there is a public hunting area nearby. And a covered bridge. A very cool place
