Meramec Caverns Natural Campground is officially located on the River, House Springs, MO 63051, USA. It's important to note that while the address states House Springs, the campground is fundamentally tied to the Meramec Caverns attraction, which is situated off Interstate 44, approximately 60 miles west of St. Louis in Stanton, Missouri. This places the campground within easy driving distance for many residents across the greater St. Louis metropolitan area and other parts of Eastern Missouri, making it a convenient option for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation. The accessibility to a major interstate ensures a straightforward journey to this natural haven. Its location directly on the Meramec River is a significant draw, providing immediate access to water activities and picturesque views, truly integrating the camping experience with the natural landscape of the region. While some older reviews may mention a different city name, for clarity, it is synonymous with the Meramec Caverns attraction.
Meramec Caverns Natural Campground offers a range of services designed to accommodate various camping preferences, though it's important to set expectations based on visitor feedback.
- Camping Site Variety: The campground provides both primitive camping options for those who prefer a more rustic experience and electric sites. These electric sites are generally marked by a pole with a hook, catering to RVs and campers needing power hookups.
- Access to Meramec Caverns: A primary service is its direct proximity and access to the Meramec Caverns tours, a major highlight for families and tourists alike.
- River Access: The campground offers river access, allowing visitors to enjoy the Meramec River for activities such as floating.
- Basic Facilities: The campground typically includes restrooms and shower houses. It is important to note that recent visitor reviews indicate varying levels of cleanliness and maintenance for these facilities, with some suggesting the bathrooms at the nearby visitor center are a preferable alternative.
- Concession Stand: A concession stand is available on-site, providing some basic food and drink options.
- Picnic Areas and Shelters: The property includes picnic areas, some with sheltered pavilions, and barbecue pits for guest use.
- Playground Area: For families with children, a playground area is available, offering a designated space for kids to play.
The Meramec Caverns Natural Campground offers several distinctive features and highlights, though some aspects receive mixed reviews from visitors.
- Proximity to Meramec Caverns: Without a doubt, the standout feature is its immediate adjacency to the renowned Meramec Caverns. This provides an unparalleled opportunity for campers to easily explore one of Missouri's most famous natural attractions, known for its beautiful scenery and family-friendly tours. Many visitors consider the caverns themselves a "great tourist attraction" and a "fun for the whole family."
- Scenic Riverfront: The campground boasts riverfront areas, offering "beautiful scenery" and a chance to relax by the Meramec River. This provides opportunities for enjoying the natural beauty, even if direct swimming in the river is often not recommended due to undertows.
- Family-Oriented Activities Nearby: Beyond the caverns, the location often facilitates access to other family-friendly activities such as zip-lining. The overall atmosphere is often described as a "cool destination with a great campground" when considering the full range of activities available in the vicinity.
- Spacious Grounds (with caveat): The general grounds of the campground can appear spacious, and some visitors have noted that during less busy times, there can be "a ton of room" between sites, offering a sense of openness. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that during peak times, particularly the "first come first serve" primitive areas, sites may become less defined and feel crowded.
- Affordable Tourist Attraction: The overall experience, particularly the caverns tour, is often praised for its "great prices" relative to the entertainment value provided, making it an accessible option for families.

Meramec Caverns Natural Campground offers a distinctive camping experience that can be highly suitable for Missouri locals, particularly those interested in combining outdoor stays with a unique tourist attraction. Its most compelling draw is undoubtedly its direct association with the famous Meramec Caverns. For Missouri families, this presents a convenient opportunity to explore an iconic natural wonder and enjoy activities like cave tours and river access, all within the same vicinity as their overnight stay. The overall value for money, especially concerning the caverns tour itself, is frequently highlighted as a positive.
However, it's vital for locals to approach the camping aspect with realistic expectations based on available public feedback. While the setting is undeniably scenic with access to the Meramec River, reviews regarding the cleanliness and maintenance of the campground's immediate facilities, particularly bathrooms and showers, suggest that a pragmatic approach is best. Visitors might consider using the facilities at the main visitor center for a more comfortable experience. For those who appreciate a less formalized camping structure, the "pull your vehicle on the grass wherever" approach for primitive sites might appeal, offering a sense of freedom, though it can lead to less defined personal space during busy periods.
Ultimately, Meramec Caverns Natural Campground is suitable for Missouri locals who prioritize location and access to the Caverns and the river, and who are prepared for a more rustic camping experience, especially concerning the provided amenities. It's an excellent choice for families looking for an affordable, adventure-packed trip that combines education with outdoor recreation. By understanding its unique offerings and potential limitations, Missourians can plan a visit that maximizes the "fun for the whole family" aspect and embraces the beautiful natural scenery of this historic Missouri landmark. It's a place to create memories, explore underground wonders, and enjoy the river, making it a truly local Missouri adventure.

A great tourist attraction! Fun for the whole family. Beautiful scenery and great prices!
Jul 03, 2025 · Heather BrownPrimitive camping and electric sites are trash don't waste your money. The hotel might be ok we didn't get to see the inside. Bathroom/shower house...... if you didn't have it when you went in you might have it when you come out. Slime on the walls dog feces in the shower stalls bugs dead and alive swarming toilets clogged and the smell will make you vomit. I would rather use the Porta potties. Grounds are deceiving looks like good level ground with drain off till it rains. When you arrive you will be told pull your vehicle on the grass wherever and that's your site. Only marked spots are for electric that's a pole with a hook and rv sites.
May 28, 2024 · JoTa StreetI gave the cavens 5 stars. The campground however leaves a lot to be desired. Booked online for a water and electric site on the riverfront. We were literally in a parking lot and couldn't see the river due to overgrown foliage. One bathhouse for the entire campground, and they are in need of cleaning and updating. People just let their trash in the fire and charcoal rings. Luckily we only stayed one night as a stop over on our trip, so it wasn't a huge deal. I would not stay here for any significant amount of time, which is a shame because the caverns, gift shops, cafe, river float and zip line businesses seem to have it together. This could be an amazing getaway if the camping facilities were updated.
Jun 13, 2024 · Amy LynnWonderful 6-mile float experience. Staff were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and they were flexible with us when we had to push back our start time. Road construction ultimately delayed our start time, but the road looks great now, and we had plenty of time to spend on the river. Great looking campgrounds, most with bbq pit, clean, functional shower house with warm water and plenty of shopping amenities close-by. Plenty of beautiful spots along the river to stop and refresh during your float.
Jun 14, 2022 · Michael HughesI wish we could rate the different areas of this park because no doubt the staff and service would 5 plus stars if we could, The park for big rigs is more of a 3 star rating. They took an old parking lot, added water and electric for RVs. If your in a rig 28’ or smaller and one side slide or no slide it’s great. Still muddy and slightly unleveled. Since we were the only campers we had plenty of room but if this was during peak season it would have been very cramped. We enjoyed our overnight and would highly recommend the tours! If you found this review helpful please give it a thumbs up and follow us as we travel this beautiful country!
