McKinley Park Campgrounds

I was there Tuesday after Memorial Day. I would have been disappointed to come camp for a long weekend of camping and seeing the grass needed mowed for the holiday weekend. No weed trimming done either.Restrooms so so after a holiday weekend. No signs that the campground was busy. Disappointed to see how many local 5th wheel campers came by to use the dump stations. I thoughts are when you camp here you can dump for free. However if you took your camping business elsewhere. You should dump there. Must have been a line. I would charge $10 for that service. Plus install cameras to keep the huge 6th wheels honest. Called honor system for a reason. Just my thoughtsBeautiful views of the lake. - Bonnie Bloom

While every campground has its unique atmosphere and occasional challenges, McKinley Park remains a popular choice for many Iowans, offering a picturesque setting by McKinley Lake and a variety of activities within its expansive park system. Let’s explore what makes this Creston campground a noteworthy option for your next Iowa adventure.

McKinley Park Campgrounds is strategically located at 600 McKinley St, Creston, IA 50801, USA. This address places it at the south end of the expansive McKinley Park, offering campers immediate access to a wealth of recreational opportunities without having to drive. The campground's position on the edge of Creston means that essential services, dining options, and local attractions are just a short drive away. For Iowans traveling from various parts of the state, Creston is accessible via major highways, making the journey to McKinley Park relatively straightforward. This balance of natural setting and urban convenience is a significant draw, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquility of camping while maintaining easy access to anything they might need from town. The beautiful views of McKinley Lake from various points within the park also add to its accessibility, providing a scenic backdrop just minutes from the heart of Creston.

McKinley Park Campgrounds provides fundamental services designed to facilitate a comfortable camping experience for its guests. It’s important to note that while the campground aims to offer necessary amenities, some services may be considered basic compared to more extensive private campgrounds. Available services generally include:

  • Campsites: The campground offers various sites, including those with electrical and water hookups suitable for RVs and campers. There are also designated tent sites, some with electricity, and others without for a more traditional experience. Sites are typically offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and campers are generally required to register and pay promptly after setting up their unit. A maximum stay of 14 days is usually enforced.

  • Restroom Facilities: Restrooms are available for campers. While cleanliness can vary, especially after busy periods like holiday weekends, the park generally provides these essential facilities. However, it's worth noting that dedicated showers may be limited or not available directly at the campground area, with some sources indicating "bathroom facilities are limited." Campers are advised to confirm the current status of shower facilities prior to their visit.

  • Dump Station: A dump station is available for campers to empty their RV waste tanks. This is a crucial amenity for RV users staying at the park.

  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Most campsites are equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, allowing for outdoor cooking and enjoyable campfires.

  • Trash Disposal: The campground generally provides options for trash disposal, though some local reports mention specific procedures, such as buying designated bags for on-site pickup rather than having dumpsters, which is a detail worth confirming upon arrival.

McKinley Park Campgrounds, situated within the larger McKinley Park, offers several features and highlights that enhance the camping experience and provide ample opportunities for recreation:

  • McKinley Lake Access: The campground is located on the edge of McKinley Lake, an 11-acre pond within the park. This provides beautiful views and opportunities for fishing. While reviews suggest a "no wake boating" on the lake, specific details about boating restrictions should be confirmed with park management.

  • Disc Golf Course: A notable feature is the 18-hole disc golf course available within McKinley Park. This provides a fun and engaging activity for campers and park visitors of all skill levels.

  • Playground Areas: The park includes playground equipment, making it a family-friendly destination for those with children. These areas provide a safe space for kids to play and expend energy.

  • Walking/Biking Trails: McKinley Park is the beginning of an extensive paved walking and biking trail. This trail extends through west Creston and northward to Green Valley State Park, offering miles of scenic paths for exercise and enjoying the outdoors. This connectivity to a broader trail system is a significant highlight for active campers.

  • Proximity to McKinley Pool: During the warmer months, campers have easy access to the McKinley Pool, which features a wading pool, heated swimming pool, two diving boards, and a large slide. This is a fantastic amenity, especially for families looking to cool off and have fun.

  • Union County Historical Village: Also located within McKinley Park, the Union County Historical Village and Museum offers a glimpse into local history, providing an educational and interesting diversion for visitors.

  • Other Park Amenities: The larger McKinley Park complex includes an all-purpose court (racquetball and basketball), a skate park, a band shell, and various picnic shelters, ensuring diverse recreational options beyond just camping.

  • Community Fishing Location: McKinley Lake is designated as a community fishing location, with various fish species present, appealing to anglers.
